  • How do you do the most good in the best way possible? That’s the question at the center of a global philosophical and social movement called effective altruism.
Rather than giving to charity based on emotional attachments, effective altruists use data and analysis to discern which causes they should support.
Members of the movement have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to charities and pledged billions more.
But effective altruism isn’t just about donating money. Some effective altruists have donated kidneys to strangers, while others dedicate their life’s work to solving big global problems.
For The New Reality, Krista Hessey meets young Canadians who have altered their lifestyle in order to live as ethically as possible and make the world a better place.

If this pandemic shows us that family is important why is it harder to visit family members.

Or be "allowed" to be with them in their last breath.

What is the beginning of doing good? What are the causes and conditions that need to appear so that altruism can appear? Or is it dependent on anything?

The verb "unfriend" first appeared in 1659.

Even if we all struggle with
the pandemic and what's going on
around the world we struggle together,
    especially for some lives affected
permanently now. My concern is that when the pandemic is over, some people are happy and some people are
sad. I feel that if the pandemic is over some people will be ok and some lives are permanently affected and that’s not fair and I am scared of that

If this pandemic teaches us to turn to God, why do churches close down and were more vulnerable as we go to church.

Just simply try to think about it... A dangerously contagious disease combined with a large grouping of people... just think about it for a second... I know you can figure it out...

Religion does nothing but breed hatred and pedophiles, it is a burden on society

    No thanks
I was raised to help others.
Don't need a movement to teach me altruism.
    I live it
    Helping others gives me joy
    Making others smile
    Makes me smile
    Life is all connected
Treat others as you want to be treated

That’s just a fundamentally bad way to help people.

If you live in a Western country and have good Internet access, then the people you know are some of the most fortunate people in the world. Effective altruism is all about helping the people (or animals!) you can't see, such as children dying of malaria in Africa or future generations who are impacted by our current recklessness.
To help these people, emotional compassion isn't enough; you have to deal with numbers however insensitive that seems. For example, it costs $4500 to save a human life according to GiveWell's evaluation of the Against Malaria Foundation. That's a much better use of your money than, for example, donating to a scholarship fund for American students. You can go further; $1 to the Humane League could save multiple chickens from miserable lives in factory farms.

U can do something good without naming it.. this is just a movement to make them feel good.

  • @redbutterfly88

Its just a social movement to make them feel good better than the others. Narcissist and effective altruism should have line

Because the people donating over half of their money are definitely just doing it to feel better than others… it’s clear that you are just saying this to make yourself feel better about being a bad person

These are the same kinds of people that turn around & burn people when they don’t get recognition for their “do-gooding”
