TDI is a standard term VW Group uses for all engine, all current Diesels use Common Rail Direct Injection with Turbocharger with Intercooler. In past they have used TDI for Pump Duse and DI Turbo engines.

The abro anti gel is required to be mixed before the Diesel starts to gel , if it gels slightly also , the mixture wouldnt work as needed.I see the isuzu was added the gel in the evening while there is a possibility that the fuel was already gell'd . I tried the ABRO antigel 2 bottels , 1 ltr each , one mixed with about 25~ml or abro .After about 12 hours in the FREEZER the NON abro bottle froze but the bottle with abro was slushy and well capable of flowing and being pumped .I took about 100 ml of the diesel mixed with abro and put it into the other bottle. after a little melting (the slush was again mised up , back into the freezer.The out come was the bottle still froze.Now I pulled out the bottle hot water treatment for about 5 min , the bottle was clear with not granules or Gell'd part reaming, back into the freezer , this time the diesel did not freeze.I am certain that the isuzu suffered this

Joel Mammachen, previous gen Innova didn't come with glow plugs, Fortuner had it. I am fairly certain that anything below -10 old Innova will face starting problems.

I am a personal Safari fanboy.. hope you could have money & time to put new Gurkha transfer case in safari along with C&R diff locks + bigger All terrain tyres & much stiffer suspension...
Nitin Chaudhary, problem with Vodka is that it freezes around -27 degree Celsius (talking about 80% proof commercially available vodka). We had a bottle with me specifically to be used as windshield washer, however I didn't use it considering the fact the night temps were plunging pretty close to vodka freezing point.
I stick to whatever Manufacturer suggests, I don't know the engine better than Toyota/Isuzu/Mahindra/Ford... The people who designed the engine know their oil grades.
Renault normally puts 15w-40 mineral oil in Duster which is horrible for a cold weather specially at startups, leave aside minus temperatures. It also offers to put 5w-30 synthetic if asked for. You sometimes have to modify few things by yourself in accordance to the need and situation. In my opinion for such extreme minus temperatures, a 0w-XX grade engine oil will do justice.
I m interested in buying a thar. Not able to decide which one. DI 4wd or crde. Would be used for occasional 4wheeling, rest everyday 35km city drive. Pls suggest.
Most of these cars come from places where such temperatures are common in winters - japan, northern europe and USA. I've lived in northern USA for sometime and cars just work fine in winters without any extra care. Snow/ice scrapers is all that you need. So, unless they've been especially re-designed for mild climate in India, I don't understant the extra pre-cautions and methods being advised.

Anshuman Bishnoi Yes you are right, the diesel sold is 'winterized' for the cold weather, and I guess it's part of local regulations. But you can also buy additives and mix it if winterized diesel is not available at the pump. In terms of technology, if these cars are very different from those in Japan, Europe etc., then apart from fuel, will these have other troubles in cold weather that we should watch for? Such as engine oil, filters, brakes, hydraulics etc.?

Why should Thar have any issues? Mahindra has updated it over the years to fix many flaws.

But the temperature doesn't seem like -10 / - 20 at night as you said. Had it so, you would have got 1/1.5 ft deep snow on road and above cars.

OEM Engine grades used on all cars. For a short trip, there is no point changing engine oils.

have you changed the grade of your engine oil because high grade oil gets freez or gets cloudy
No changes to engine oil grade required, stick to whatever manufacturer says.

CRDe is better, only thing better in Thar DI is front solid axle for offroading.
