Totally agree with you, I'd be lost without my Duo now. I just hope MS stick with it and don't drop it like so many other products. As for Dual screens as opposed to a folding single screen, from someone who uses two screens at home and work, try taking one off me now, I would fight for it. One screen is no way as productive as two no matter how big it is. When working with two screens your brain can separate the work and finds it easy to compartmentalise and I know there is software out there to split screens but it is nowhere as easy as just dragging and dropping from one screen to another. The argument about watching a movie on a Duo across the gap is mad too, you wouldn't do that if you had two monitors, you would just put the movie on one screen. End of gentle rant 🙂
lol yeah I agree
It's interesting to hear it from your perspective. I sold my iPad a while back and ended up buying a Surface Duo as a replacement because I wanted something that allowed me to multitask. Now that I've been using the Duo as a tablet, I really can't see how practical it would be as a phone. Works beautifully as a tablet, but as a phone it seems so clunky and awkward to use. Glad to see people showing interest in the device though, we need more innovating tech like this!
I know what you mean but using the phone is probably the least thing I do with my Duo, but you get used to open and fold back to answer and close to hang up. Just like a and old flip phone I suppose 😉
The original Duo is my daily driver. In combination with a smartwatch it's not awkward at all. Only in rare instances where I only have one hand available it can be a bit clunky but even those moments I learned to work with. Also answering calls by flipping the screen around is strangely satisfying. Can't see myself go back to a regular phone.
Just used the Duo today as a phone, having used it as a mini-laptop until this point. It is incredible to be able to maintain the productivity that I’ve had and be able to make calls as well - pulling up emails and documents while talking.
I don’t think I’ll go back.
@@Ronnet I am getting used to using it as a phone now after a few weeks using it as my daily device. The idea of a smart watch is starting to grow on me as well.
I really like the aspect ratio of the duo screens. It's very awkward going back to traditional skinny screens.
I actually have no intention on going back to the skinny phones. I remember my first laptop had that beautiful square 4:3 screen and I loved that. The next laptop I got was a nice upgrade but with one caveat, it had a 16:10 screen and it took a while to get used to that. Then, 16:9 screen on the next laptop and that was an even shorter screen. It's the same thing with the more wider screens on the duo.
Shane I'm about one week into the Duo and I'm already seeing all the things you've mentioned about productivity and working/using a handheld differently. I'm hooked - the only thing holding me back from ditching my pixel 6 pro is that my work has me make and receive a lot of phone calls, so I'm going to test it for a week with the Duo as my only phone and see how it goes - I'm a little worried about the potential frustration of opening and flipping into phone mode and hanging up on people or the ensuing delay. But you were 100% right: it's a life changing experience for workaholics whose enterprises are Microsoft based!
Exactly as I have found. No other phone makes it so easy to use dual screens. Also the size and shape of the screens are perfect for me. As long as Microsoft supports the Duo family I'm happy to use them as my daily driver.
many apps don't work on split screen. dual screens are a must.
Thanks man, for all your great content. 🙌
Thanks! Super nice of you!
Great points. In my opinion one other aspect of the duo that pushes you to be more productive is the fact that if you open one app you are constantly reminded that there is additional work space that is not being used, so intuitively our brain tries to fill this space. On the fold, on the other hand, when you open an app it fills the whole screen, and you have to be very deliberate about splitting that into multi tasking. I think this is the core fundamental value that separates the duo from any other mobile device
I really like the ecosystem of having a duo. When its closed its closed... when its open I mean business, and I use my screen much less because I am doing more with less time because of the added real estate. I love the Duo 2 and would be heart broken to go back to a candy bar phone. However, I do miss water resistance which is a constant worry with Duo and I have yet to drop my Duo. Thank goodness. Living in Michigan I was leery getting a fold due to the extreme temperature's in summer and winter here, with the possible of breaking the foldable screen.
I really wish there was a phone case that would make it more durable but still be able to use
I have an iPhone 13 pro and a pixel 6 pro and a surface duo 2. I love them all but when I want to just sit down and relax and take in unlimited amounts of content or get stuff done really fast and easy, I reach for my duo 2. It's just the best for getting stuff done. Once you use it and learn it, it's very difficult to go back to a single screen device. I think I'll end up in therapy sessions if they ever decided to can the duo line. I can't do without it. I'm a duo addict. Shane sir, you are doing a wonderful job. Always keeping us up to date.
I love my Duo 2 and the MSFT ear pods work like a charm. I use the slim pen 2 which also works perfectly and fits securely & charging on the case, I have no issues using it as a phone and as a package this is a complete device. I also love my Xperia 1 mk 3 but I have made the Duo 2 my primary.
In the meantime I am looking forward to 12L when it is released.
You've given me a lot of things to consider about this phone and I'm saving up for the Duo 2. Thanks for the info!
I am a proud duo1 user for almost 2 month now. And there is no going back. But I got to say, that a "normal" phone is more convenient to pull out and scroll twitter or Instagram. But I would never go back. That productivity is just perfect
Since having to switch back to my duo 2 from my z fold 3 I have been super impressed with how smooth the duo 2 is now... The dual screens are actually useful now that stuff like the sticky notes actually work properly and the home screen doesnt randomly just stop working. It is so smooth I'm not going to switch back to my fold 3 for awhile yet.
Man, had that experience on my iPhone just now. Trying to pay for something in an app and had to switch out to my password manager for card details. Took three context switches to get all the info.
What a pain in the arse!
My Duo is my daily driver for work and when I’m in the same situation on it it’s like, “oh, hold on, I have another screen. Let’s just pop the password manager over there 👈and the store app over there 👉”.
What a joy 🤩
After almost a year on a Fold 2, then a Fold 3, then a Duo 2, I tried a Pixel 6 and I lasted for about 6 weeks. It was a good phone but I just missed having the larger screen available. Went back to a Duo 2 and had that for probably 8 months. Now I'm back on a Fold 3 temporarily so I can trade it in for a Fold 4. I miss the duo already though and I may end up trading that fold 4 for another duo 2 when I get bored of it. There really aren't a lot of options once you get into the foldable/dual screen game.
The fold is a good substitute but its not nearly as good with multitasking as you mentioned. Maybe its the ADD but I'm constantly flipping between multiple apps and only the duo has ever handled that well.
I had the exact same experience as you. I had the original Surface Duo. I described it to my friends as a beautiful prototype 😂 It was a great proof of concept device, but it was way too buggy.
I switched to the Z Fold 3 when it came out and it did feel a lot more refined, but it didn't seem "all there" for me either. I had to use Labs to get a lot of apps to work the way I wanted them to, especially games that require a certain aspect ratio to be played to the fullest. It was a pain to do spilt screen and to multitask. I would always make the mistake of tapping the app I wanted to open in split screen (when going into the full app list) which just opens it in full screen. Even months after months of using it, I'd always forget to drag and drop apps that I didn't have pinned 😅
When I got a new job, I switched to the Surface Duo 2. Nearly all of the concerns I had with it before have been fixed. And I'm 10x more productive on the Duo than I am with any other device. I even prefer it over my laptop for work. I totally agree with you, the width and aspect ratio is one of the best features.
The only thing I'm missing is an option to choose the aspect ratio that certain apps open in. 4:3 doesn't work for all apps. Well... that and a return to live tiles, but I don't think Microsoft is gonna fulfill my request on that 😂😒
S10>S22Ultra5GY or SD2 vacillator): Fascinating Video, Shane. And intriguing too are many of the comments below, which - while exhibiting persuasive enthusiasm and conversion - nonetheless still display that slightly gnawing anxiety that Microsoft may tire of the product and Panos lose his enthusiasm. And then where will the owners be?
Tbh, Ive been using the SD1 for a little over a year and a half and will likely either go back to a regular sized phone or to a Galaxy Fold. I just recently got a Galaxy S20 as a company phone and am blown away with the features this has compared to my SD. Last week I had both phones on comparing settings and features and couldnt believe how barebones and basic Microsoft has been with the Surface Duo. It kind of sucks, because initially I really liked this phone until I saw how android has progressed on other phones.
Absolutely! As you know, I did. Loving my iPhone SE 2022.
100% agree - i love my Duo 2 - I do find the phone functionality is a compromise particularly as I cant use it on a car dash mount as I could with a candy bar phone and generally the lack of a front notification screen also for me reduces the functionality as a phone for calls and messages - though a recent purchase of the pixel pro buds and the functionality they have has reduced that frustration a bit. Also why can't someone come up with a decent cover for protection - the pen cover is at best a compromise and the pouch I use doesn't protect from an accidental drop.
Setting that aside I really have no other significant issues and I would definitely miss the 2 screen experience the duo provides - I considered a fold but the screen surface felt strange to me and then you have to put up with the crease - the Duo has the hinge acknowledged but I might as well live with the Duo 2 hinge for the extra functionality when using 2 screens and a better screen feel.
I hope Microsoft persist with this format though I fear they will follow the pack and move toward the fold format.
This is the same reason why I recently bought the surface duo online. I need two apps running simultaneously and more natively than the way the still awesome z fold 4 would work. Besides I felt like the duo as a device is more productive in terms of use when you got to use two screens running together.
Great perspective! Thanks for sharing.
Not sure how old you are but those of us that used blackberries were slowly tortured for years as phones got skinnier and skinnier. Have you ever seen that movie “thinner” it was kind of like that with less gypsies
I am now using the Galaxy S20 Note, the last official Note and the last one with expendable storage. I had damaged my original SD1 and bought another one, the 256G version but it was also locked to AT&T. I went through the same unlocking procedure as before but this time Microsoft no longer unlocks AT&T-branded phones, officially informing me of this via email. So I had to get another phone since I am not in the US or Canada and therefore can't use AT&T. My previous phone was the Hauwei Mate 20X, another large phone, and we all know what happened to that brand. Long story short, there are some pros and cons going back to the "candy-bar" type phones. Pros: with a high-end phone camera quality is guaranteed. That's probably the main advantage. The other, the closed screen, like you pointed out, is the perfect size. Cons: As just pointed out, candy-bar phones are too narrow. They are longer and narrower. I would prefer less height and more width. And of course, you can't multi task like the Duo. It just can't be beat. I have my Galaxy for phone calls and pictures but for most everything else, the Duo is close by. I'll have a look at the Duo 3 when it reaches the market.
I'm going to try to do that combination with my s22+ ultra and duo 1. Hope I can find a nice balance. Duo is just an awesome equipment, minus the camera.
I hate that phones have moved away from 4:3 screens. The duo has my interest, and might get me back to android (or whatever runs it next) if they add phone utility while closed, fix the camera mountain, minimize the hinge void, and adds ip protection.
Duo 2 Life is awesome, mind blowing photos better than other phones, part of it is me but the device des alot of the heavy lifing. I like the
'its done thing" when I dont want to be bothered or sleeping. When used there are always two screens or one large screen at the ready. The glance bar tells me if the sound was important as in a text. The magical stuff like Kindle is icing on the cake. The ability to open side by side is an absolute no brainer. Never have I ran out of battery. only a few times has it thermally shut down, my fault leaving it in the sun. I have NFC and Dual SIM dont use either nor do I use wireless charging.
Last year we moved to Lafayette, TN and as you might know it is very rural so Verizon service is spotty at best. We asked those who live in this area what service they recommend and AT&T received the most votes. So we went to AT&T signed up for a line to test the service and we got a Pixel 6a to try it on. The cell service is slightly better, but thank God I still have my Surface Duo2 on Verizon.
I cannot get any work done on the small screen, can't multitask easily, and as small as the screen is, I have trouble reaching everything without the phone slipping out of my hand. Also, I miss the aspect ratio of the Duo2, it is so much better for all my uses.
In conclusion, I hope there is a Duo 3 and beyond, otherwise I have no idea what to do and do not want to go to a cold style phone. I would love Google to surprise everyone and release a Duo style phone phone alongside the fold style they are releasing.
You know if people are from around here by how the pronounce Lafayette 😂
@@shanecraigtech LOL... So true! Learned that last September when we were looking for home. For the next 2 months after we put a bid on a home. I was practicing it in my head by saying over and over again, "Say it, Lafayette". I think I had a couple of nightmares over it. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I absolutely love my Duo. Whenever I do go back to a slab phone it doesn't necessarily feel unnatural, but I immediately feel limited and want my second screen back.
Watching this video on one screen and buying stuff on the other. Damn this thing!
Understand completely the hate of the skinny screens, I was thinking of getting a duo 2, as my daily driver is almost 4 years old and is starting to feel like it is it's a Huawei Mate 20X I love this phone it's massive tall and wide 7.2inch screen with a battery to match 5000mah . I did my research on the duo and I think that when the duo 3 comes out, fingers crossed that it does lol. I will be getting that , but in the meantime I will be muddling through with the ZTE axon 30 5g , I bought it cos it was cheap, and the spec was good , and it will do until something better comes along , but getting used to a phone that is 9mm skinnier than my old one and 10mm shorter is doing my head in lol .
Awesome video, pretty much feel exactly the same. There is no way i will ever, ever go back to a classic slab phone. If the Duo ceases to exist in the future, kinda like windows phone, ill adapt and just buy another brand foldable. Theyll be much more popular and probably cheaper by the time that happens, if ever.
Experiencing the same with my Fold 3. I find myself using just a single app and only on occasion split screening because of how much more annoying it was. That was one of the reasons I was willing to trade it in for an S22 Ultra. (The better cameras and S Pen silo were the others.) I'm enjoying it and am actually using it a bit more due to novelty and being able to set up multiple launchers that are compatible out of the box. However, I frequently find myself frustrated whenever I want to do anything involving multitasking. Not for nothing have I gone through multiple phones for my secondary device in the last eight months but have never been tempted to put my main SIM card in any of them.
Great perspectives, Shane. Given your Duo 2 is your daily driver, how do you manage incoming calls? In other words, I doubt you keep the display open at all times. Therefore, do you rely on your smartwatch to see who is calling or do you use another method? If you already have content that answers this question I would be happy to have the link. Thanks a bunch! To reinforce your thoughts about two physical screens, I use my Surface Duo 1 to grade student work at times. For the same reason you described in your video, I prefer 2 physical screens because I can copy certain content or feedback over to the grading area as I grade student work. This is remarkably better on 2 screens than one. Splitting one physical screen into 2 parts just is not the same. I have been looking at the Duo 2 as an option for the possibility of actually using it as a daily driver given the upgrade to the camera. Yet, I really like the flatness of the Duo 1 without the camera bump. Decisions...
hmm, maybe a thicker case could make that camera bump even and then the phone would be able to lay down flat.
Completely distracted by the dog, I like how he moves the curtain to get a view outside
Here's what's funny about this for me. I used to have a Fold 3, for productivity purposes. I was thinkin I can have that one device only and be extra productive. In my use I realized that I actually prefer to use a tablet cuz the screen is bigger and be even more productive on that. Plus some of the Apps weren't optimized for the main display, which really bothered me. I also realized that I don't always need to be productive on the go, havin a device that Folds in my pocket want necessary. So I got rid of my Fold and went back to using a regular phone and tablet setup.
Different strokes for different folks! My wife tried using a V60 with the dual screen case and just never used the other screen. Wasn't for her, so we moved on from it.
@@shanecraigtech keep makin good vids.
I had to go back to my Note 8, when I had to exchange my Duo 2 for a new one, because I messed up the charging port. I will say, that experience totally made me missed wireless charging.
During that time, while I readjusted to my Note, I was counting down the days, where I could have my Duo back in my hands. It was a bit jarring, considering I love the ability to multi-task easily and intuitively.
I just purchased a 6a so I will be doing this as well. I'm going out of town for a month so the 6a will be my main and the Duo 2 will be my tablet/secondary phone.
Lol the flipping back and forth is the reason I got a duo, the biggest issue with single screen devices...when your flipping back and forth and the phone decides to close the app all together and you lose what your doing. It could be just phones with lower ram, idk
I am constantly switching from a duo 2 to an iPhone mini. It takes different expectations of what the services are capable of. Love my duo 2 as a primary, though. Couldn't say that for duo 1.
I was rocking a duo 1 and 12 mini for three longest time. I'm doing a flip 4 and iphone se for now but am waiting on the duo 3 and checking out the fold 5 next year
I went from Duo to the IPhone 13. Now I'm back on Duo and the difference in productivity is insane!
Oh God. Nah man... I can't use regular phones anymore.
Me and the Z Fold 3 was supposed to be an experiment to see if the digital art experience was comfortable enough to rip me away from my Note+Tab S combo. The plan was to return the ZF3 within two weeks.
...it's a year later. My Note 20 Ultra and Tab S7+ barely ever even see the light of day unless I randomly decide to update them.
I've tried to see if I could go back to my iPhone, my Pixel, my Note 20 Ultra... doesn't last more than a day before my SIM goes back into my ZF3 (or my Duo). Bought a S22... returned an S22. Went right back to my ZF3.
This is life now.
Mine SD1 got some water on it, it works but one screen flickers on low brightness.. so I decided to use it as my house reader/ media device while digging out an old samsung. The adjustment wasn't too bad. I don't have to treat the samsung with gloves, which is a relief!
Which is funny I use gcam on my dou 1, I had the same feeling when I went back to my regular slab phone, I missed my dou 1. Gcam saved this phone for me because the camera is potato
I really hope Microsoft doesn't quit on the duo. I don't want to go back to a regular phone
Easily. I go back to my iphone all the time. I want to love the duo but the screen and orientation issues still bug me and then I will go back until I want to try the Duo again. I like to play with android and iOS. I like aspects of both.
Yes! My duo died suddenly. I overworked it and the battery crapped out on me. I went straight to the pixel 6 pro and never looked back. I thought it would be hard but it wasn't. 🤷🏾
My daily driver is (and always has been) an iPhone. However, my backup phone is always an Android device, currently a Duo-2.
Love this phone. Sadly I dropped it and cracked the left screen front and back and finding dead ends when trying to get it repaired. Any suggestions? Cant even find a good source to buy another.
Still trying to figure out the best way to use my new Duo.
I flip between the Surface Duo and Samsung Fold 2. I wish I could stay with the Duo, but it's just so slow and buggy by comparison. I'm hoping either the Pixel Fold or the Samsung Fold 4 adopt the Oppo Find N multitasking, that would be the perfect solution in my eyes.
For me I can't. Yes a better camera ect would be nice on my Duo but I can't ever see myself getting a single screen phone again.
I kinda feel like... if the Fold 4 was a good buy for you... you would have already upgraded to the ZF3 beforehand. Sounds to me like the Fold 2 is really all you need out of the Samsung folding phone experience.
That said, my ZF4 hype is overflowing. I can't effing wait to blow some cash on that 😄😄😄
If I were only buying for myself to use, I wouldn't be considering it at all.
Im sure you did a video on this a few weeks back Shane so I am sorry if you mentioned this there and im just a tired lazy guy, at 9:18 there is a widget showing RAM and % counter, What app/widget is that?
Droid optimizer. I'm honestly not sure if it's doing anything 😂
Hello Community,
My Samsung ZFold 2 5G is dying. It hs stopped retaining charge, among other maladies.
I swear Samsung made it this way (planned obsolescence), just in time for me to buy the new Fold 4.
I do want to replace my ZFold 2 with either the Duo or Samsung ZFold 4.
Does anyone know when the Duo 3 will be released?
I don't think I could ever go back...
What do you use or recommend as a calling app or do you use what's available by default with the duo?
I use stock
What kind of strap are you using on the fold to be able to talk with your hands without throwing the phone? Is this something that could be adapted to the SD2?
amzn.to/3zLpJ6k
It would have to be a little shorter to be able to fit underneath the camera bump. If you put it on the inside of the book, I think it's going to affect phone mode.
so funny i tell all my friends that i will never go back to a normal cell phone!
OK I gotta know. How do you deal with messaging while switching from phone to phone? I'm still on the fence of getting a Duo. Finding them for under 400.
What do you mean?
@@shanecraigtech going from one phone to another Google messenger doesn't have a way to update with the most recent messages.
I can't! Full stop!
No, I can't. When I'm forced to use my fold 3 I roll my eyes. If I had to go back to a slab I'd rather not have a phone.😂
Panos bet not cancel this phone line. I'd be incredibly sad forever or until Samsung releases something similar. I cannot stand the narrow ass fold though, idk wtf they are doing or where that line is even going.
Lastly, I can't go back to a single screen cpu either. I even use my laptop the same way. Switching screens is only one swype away. I always have 2 things running side my side.
Nope... Still have my Note 8 and very occasionally have to turn it on and use it. Hate it. I'm screwed if Micro$oft stops making the Duo...

IMO, not really.

dont buy fold..use apps to better your phone
nice Video. Good to know
Yes.
no i can not
Coming from a duo to fold 3 myself... I like the ZFold3.... ALOT. TOTALLY LOVE THE ONE SINGLE UNINTERRUPTED DISPLAY. THE CREASE DOESN'T BOTHER ME AT ALL. HOWEVER I LIKE THE DUO EQUALLY AS FOLD 3 FOR A DIFFERENT REASON. NOT BECAUSE OF MEDIA BECAUSE DUO WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE A MEDIA DEVICE IMO. BUT FOR THE PRODUCTIVITY AS YOU PUT IT, IS BAR NONE. THE SCREEN WIDTH, TOTALLY RIDICULOUS ON THE DUO. I LIKE THE NARROW SCREEN TOO ON THE FOLD BECAUSE OF ONE HANDED TEXTING LOL BUT I ALSO LIKE TO OPEN UP AND THERE IS ONE BIG SCREEN. I DON'T RUN TWO APPS ON MY FOLD 3 LIKE I WOULD WITH DUO... AND I DON'T THINK I EVER WILL. I TYPED THIS BEFORE YOU EVEN MENTIONED THAT POINT AND YES IT IS DEFINITELY JUST AN EXTRA STEP. I CAN'T DRAG AND DROP THE SECOND APP AWAY. ITS LIKE I HAVE TK REENTER THE APP BY ITSELF ITS KINDA STRANGE.
