      I think this is happening to me as well.
      Several of the more intense games I play crash randomly.
      Downloads cause my pc to crash randomly.
      Sometimes it just crashes while watching youtube.
      Totally random and I couldn't understand why.

    mine was failing for nearly a year, every now and again it would crash, fans would spin but wouldnt boot up. never suspected the psu was the problem (because the fans would spin, i would expect no power at all, plus it worked fine a lot of the time)
    but boy were they spot on with the warranty, just a bit over the 5 years covered and it failed.

    Good information for end users. The first about 8 minutes he says be sure to plug it in and turn it on. The rest of the time, he's telling you to use a tester. They aren't perfect but you will get a basic idea of output from them. I was hoping to learn something about how many milliseconds a given power supply can stay on if the power is dropped. For example, would 30 milliseconds cause a failure.

    My 600W PSU just died today.. it started off earlier this week when I was playing the game … out of no where my fans went 100% and the monitor display turned off. Then it happened again when I did a little bang on the desk. I ended up smelling the burning smell when I tried to fix my LED lights in the front of my case, I plugged it in & I heard a pop, it had shut off. I unplugged the led lights & turned the PC on, it was a delay and when it came on i smelled a burning smell so I instantly shut off the power switch then unplugged the cable. I smelled around my PC just to make sure it wasn’t the MB because that was my first thought. I confirmed by unplugging the cord & going to another socket & trying to turn my PC on and it was a few seconds late coming on, it came on then shut off came on again & that’s when i decided it was my PSU. Lucky it didn’t take out my 2070S & i7 9700k along with the ram

    Here's a thought that will help you understand how little most people understand electronics, including me. I keep hearing the name "power supply" being thrown about and how it might have gone bad. I kinda thought the "power supply" was that lil' ol' wall socket that we plug our computer into. It's supplying the power, isn't it? It turns out my "power supply" had actually gone bad and a smart friend of mine picked one up at Best Buy for $35 and installed it. I still don't know what it does, but I was happy to just keep pulling Hamiltons out of my wallet to drop into his lap as payment for the "thing" and his services. Maybe you should have started this video with an explanation of what a power supply is and what it does and why we shouldn't eat it for breakfast.

      Power supply unit (PSU) takes power from the wall (220V or 110V and turns it into power that PC components can use (12V and less). But a 35$ PSU from Best Buy is not gonna be the best option. A PSU that cheap can't be good quality

If i leave it for a while or switch off the PSU at the back and leave for a while it starts up perfectly fine. PSU is only 1.5yrs old. Once or twice it shut down during gameplay. Once i had BSOD (running after windows update - not sure if that was the culprit.) Wanted to add one more symptom that happened to me, spent 2 months and nearly $2k trying to figure it out. Computer would randomly restart, now what I mean by that, is that the PC acts as if you walked up to it and just shut it off using the main switch on the psu on the back. It would happen regardless of what the computer was doing or whatever load it was under, just random. Ended up after changing things out and swapping everything and consulting a lot of IT guys that I knew, the power supply that I had (both Platinum rated and expensive) was just bad after 2-3 years. It happens. Problem free now.

      Another cause of that sort of behavior could be leaking capacitors on the motherboard. You can visually examine them and if you see corrosion on top, that's pretty much the end of the board unless you can do surface mount repair for multilayer boards.

The other day I was installing a game on my SSD and also playing a movie when my laptop suddenly became unresponsive first for a few seconds before eventually getting restarted on its own. Upon restart, there were two critical kernel power event ids 41 and 142 which are usually related to the PSU. PSU errors can also cause BIOS issued where the BIOS won't boot and it the gives you the choice to set the default settings. This is due to a bad OC or a slight change in volts for RAM, OCs or non OCs but just getting say ram speed to be stable at a certain speed.

    • @ITProTv
      @ITProTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You will need to test the PSU to verify that this is not the issue, I suspect it is not as you can power the old card, which means that the system is most likely being underpowered. If this is the situation you might need a PSU with greater wattage. However, another possibility is that the new card is bad, shorting out or overheating and needs to be replaced. You can get a Thermaltake Universal ATX PSU tester for fairly cheap and test all the connectors on the PSU. See here: www.cdw.com/product/thermaltake-dr.-power-ii-atx-power-supply-tester/2546935?pfm=srh

    Thanks for this I'm new to pc and I'm pretty sure my psu is the culprit. I'm positive it's my pus because it won't even turn on and I was having complete shutdowns. What would cause a brand new psu to fail? Is 500w not enough for the GPU and The processor?

    • @ITProTv
      @ITProTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The power requirements for your build can be found by checking the vendor's specifications for each component and then adding up the total wattage needed, however this total is the bare minimum for the PSU. I try to go with 25% more wattage that the minimum to ensure that the system is powered correctly. The second part of that question is can a brand new PSU failing and that is a possibility. Make sure that you check the main 24 pin power connector to the motherboard and do not confuse the 8 pin PCIe power connectors with the ATX/EPS 8 pin CPU connector. If you have integrated video (built into the motherboard) then you can remove the graphics card and configure the BIOS/UEFI to use the motherboard's integrated graphics. If you computer boots then the problem could be with either the power to the graphics card or card itself.

Press power button and the hard drive light goes right out. I tried it 30 times and it booted once. I disconnected and eliminated all devices. Could it be a week power supply? I even tried powering off the bios battery. Tried different monitor keyboard and mouse

    I'm not sure if it's my psu but whenever I play triple a games it runs perfectly for like 10 mins then my pc shuts off. But this doesn't happen when I play games that don't contain triple a graphics. I definitely know it isn't my cpu (ryzen 3 3200g)
    or my gpu (RTX 2060) so I am assuming it has to be the psu since when my pc randomly turns off my LED on the power button flickers...

    My PC when powered on has all fans just blaring but it won't POST. Even breadboxing it the first time it won't POST but I think the second time it POSTED. Put it all back in the case and it was on for about 20 hours, even played some demanding games then later that night was watching a TH-cam vid and it powered off into a restart, only the fans were blaring and no POST yet again. I've changed to a new mobo, new ram, changed to a weaker GPU I know works and still nothing....so it's the PSU right? Before all this happened I'd power on and it would get to the 'loading Windows' spinny wheel thing then restart, then it would boot normally. Did this for about 2 days before I started swapping out stuff. I don't have the money right now though =( and no friends to borrow their working PSU from =/

      Hi Ryan, this could be a PSU issue, memory improperly seated, or main power connector not seated correctly. The best way to tell is to find out if there is any POST beep codes, on screen POST errors. You could also get an ATX Universal PSU tester to confirm that the PSU connectors are giving the right voltages.

My computer isn't as loud as it used to be though, so I suspect the PSU fan isn't spinning when it's supposed to cool the PSU so it's overheating, or not enough power to feed all the computer components. I bought a new desktop about 4 months ago and while I was playing A game I started to smell a burning wire smell coming from it does this have anything to do with psu?

    • @ITProTv
      @ITProTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The burning smell is usually due to power, however it does not necessarily mean a PSU issue. When inspecting the motherboard you will notice a series of chips near the CPU, called the MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor) these make up the VRMs (voltage regulator modules) that controls the voltages to the components on and connected to the motherboard (CPU, graphics card). This could be the issue. Your graphics card might be something to check. Do a visual inspection of the system unit for damage to these components, look for swelling capacitors on the motherboard, including all connections from the PSU for signs of damage as a lot of times when you smell the burning, you can also see where it happened. USE CAUTION, always disconnect all power connections BEFORE doing any inspection of the system unit.

    My sons PC just died, he told me its been having issues booting up and him having to keep pressing the power button and it would eventually startup. This time it would start up and he just heard a pop noise and smelled burned... Hopefully, nothing major happened.
