A bit more detail on Cody's information. When you use the magnetic base your antenna is still your antenna but the vehicle becomes a groundplane which increases the efficiency of the antenna.
The connector on the BaoFeng is an SMA connectot. The connector on the antenna is a BNC. So the adapter is a BNC to SMA adapter.
The BNC allows you to conveniently use lots of different antennas - it's probably the most common antenna connector - but it doesn't let you add a push to talk accessory.
EDIT: I left out genders. The SMA connector on the BaoFeng *RADIO* is SMA male. The BNC connector on the Signal Stick is a Male BNC. So the adapter you would need to ask for would has SMA Female on one side and BNC Female on the other side. So that would be a *SMA* *female* *to* *BNC* *female* *adapter* .
One other thing to watch out for is that there are also RP-SMA (reverse polarity SMA) connectors which are a different thing the RP SMA look very similar IIRC the dimensions and the same but the pin and socket are reversed.
I've added this because my intention was not to "knock down" Cody who is not claiming to be a radio expert.
I wanted to help people get the right stuff and understand whatt that stuff was doing for them.

    • @1337flite
      @1337flite ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@GeorgeAdams A push to talk accessory is an accessory that allows you to trigger the "talk" function the same as if you were pushing the button on the side of the radio or a mic. In fact the button on the side of the radio is called the PTT button (push-tp-talk).
Sometimes the talk function it can be sound activated, some times it can be a big remote button that you can mount somewhere like the steering wheel of a car or the middle of your body armour.
It's usually used in conjunctiom with another mic, e.g. a headset, throat mic , lapel mic etc and possibly another speaker or earphone.
For example a car set uop for covert surveilane might have.a mic in the sun visor and the audio going to an earpiese or the vehicle's sound system and a PTT button mounted on the back of steering wheel, so you can trigger it with your forefinger and talk.
Basiclaly it helps you use the radio without having it in your hand.
You could for example put it in a pouch on the back of your belt and still use the radio while it is in the pouch.
PTT accesoriees are usually attched via the audio in jack.

Best antenna for baofeng or similar is a
    Diamond 7o1
    Or Nagoya 771
Use sma connectors anything else will leak signal on UHF
    Centre loaded highest gain
    Of antenna in its class
Abree millitary types are ok but
Stick to 18 " one or swr will knock it out
A rat's tail or counterpoise is a great addition .
For a extension antenna a bandit type dipole is perfect it's all wire it coils up has a ballen built in .
Using a mag mount without checking swr or having it on a metal base for a ground plane is risking blowing the finals in radio .
Baofengs are amazing radios but double check antenna info
In particular swr when using adjustable antennas or directional beam which will vastly improve range but in one direction .
Diamond antenna and fix 7" wire to screw on radios body and youl not be disappointed
In settings switch to wide band for picking up weak signals once established move to narrow band for better reception if you lose it go back to wide setting .
Height is your friend UHF is line of sight and doesn't like bricks or rock ,
Higher channels give slightly better performance .
If your using 2mtrs or VHF your better with a larger abree antenna or the bandit tuned to VHF
A sirio type white stick pre tuned slung up a tree or on a pole is VG
I'd stick that mag mount on a hurricane fence or run a length of wire onto a wire fence
Anything metal I wouldn't trust it on its own I suppose you could fashion wire ground plane for it maybe 4 lengths of say six feet wire but check swr with a swr meter .
2.0 is workable aim for 1.5 or lower .

As you stated, the mag-mount needs to be attached to metal or it will not work. The metal ground plane completes the antenna.
Fun fact: when you use a handheld radio with a whip antenna, the water in your head acts as the ground plane. The antennas in cellphones act the same way.
You can save a few bucks by ordering the signal stick antenna directly from signalstuff, the manufacturer, and specify an SMA female base. That eliminates the unnecessary BNC adapter and the markup.

I just spent a week in Yellowstone and realized the sad state of my cheap radio setup. Gonna upgrade by year's end.

Flip the oil pan over. You don't want that much of your antenna below the lip of your ground plane.

The flat surface of the vehicle roof creates a large ground plane for the antenna, helping direct the signal out in the horizontal plane.

If it wasn't for you I would not have bought my own personal radio. Me and my friend volunteer for red cross at my school and he is planning to buy his own personal radio but he has no one to use it with unless I buy one I was hesitant at first but I did not realize that you made a few videos praising the UV 5r so I bought it and did not regret buying it even if it costs a months allowance.

What we're seeing here is someone slowly going down the rabbit hole of becoming a ham radio operator.. 1 year from now.."how to drill an NMO mount in your dual alternator truck" :). I really like the BNC adapters from Diamond.. they are black and blend in a bit more.

Has anyone in Canada ordered from Radio Made Easy and if so, any issues with shipping or customs?

I appreciate the link to radio made easy website, but specific links to which connector and other parts would be nice as there are several different connectors and things, and for a simple guy like myself it would really help.

I don’t like adapters. Every time there is a break in the coax there WILL be signal loss. Also, EMI if the shielding isn’t up to par.

Signal Stuff has a cold weather variant of their Signal Stick as well. Though wrapping the regular one in electrical tape or a long piece of heat shrink might help it keep its shape, too.

Yeah nitinol is a wild material. I used to help make those antennas in a garage and its been fun to see over the years how much thicker we've been able to make those antennas so they stand up better in cold weather. The proceeds help support @hamstudy so totally look them up!

Throw the signal stick on an swr meter. They fall short on one of the ham bands. I think it's the 2m band. The Nagoya NA-771 is much better. Low swr on both bands. Also, the magnetic mount doesn't turn your whole car into an antenna. Get a Tram 1181 and an SO-239/sma female adapter and be done with it. Good all around antenna. Uhf/vhf/gmrs.

Got about 5 of those radios and people bad mouth them all the time in the Ham Radio world. Been a ham coming up on 50 years and if it works don't knock it.
The radio is so cheap it's a throw away and buy another one for 30 to 40 bucks. Got one of the first ones from china years ago and it still works fine.
