Any of the critics here see his resume resume? He most be doing something right and have good connections don't ya think? Of course he is selling Rotolight - who cares? He's just sharing what he does... I like to mix strobe and constant light or just strobes and even, OMG, natural light....
I really like Mark’s work, I like how his approach sets him apart and simplify the technical aspect of photography, focusing on capturing great images.

I enjoyed this presentation regardless of the Rotolight sponsorship. Got some good insight into his rapport with clients and how he makes them laugh and feel comfortable. Also remember these shots are SOOC no processing for those who are comparing to the images of the celebrities which are post processed.
'sweet corn! sweet corn!' 😂 he's not only an excellent photographer, he does a tremendous job at using his words to put the subjects at ease and find a way to connect in order to get the expression he wants. too many portrait photographers get caught up with the technical aspects and forget about the most important part of portrait photography. (sidenote: surprised at how many negative and disparaging comments there are.)
I love using constant lighting but it pales power wise compared to strobes and Rotolight is just too much money compared to cheaper alternatives from Godox which still have high CRI ratings and show great skin colors. Plus they can use Bowen mount modifiers which is a Huge plus. Of course they don't do movie effects like Rotolight so there is that. So I do own a few smaller Rotolights but try are not my first or 2nd to go lights.
What was the power setting on for majority of these portraits?

Great presentation Mark Mann . But, You also interested me in this new Leica SL2 . :)
I did both in my studio. but was back at Flash super fast.
2 reasons: Depth of field, combined and almost more importantly, that the models either have very small pupils or I have to go massively high with the ISO so that they don't feel blinded.with constant light.(Maybe movie actors are better trained to habe the Eyes (and pupils) wide open in bright light?) . In Studio if i have to go to or over ISO400 i do not like the results reg. grain and noise.. (Canon R5 Bodies)
Not being disrespectful in any way please Mark has forgotten more than I know but I feel some information is not correct. The inverse square law applies to any light source regardless of its origin. And Mark said how the constant leds create a more filmic quality. This is because of the spectral distribution of the led is different to a flash even when set at the same kelvin. This can make blue and green tones appear differently. Ps these answers came from AI 3 years after it was posted. I’m not that smart but thought it would be interesting to see if it was possible or just perceived. 😊
I don’t understand the reasoning that continuous light is more filmic than strobe. It’s just light, and the filmic look is as much a function of post-processing than lighting. Mark wonders why the Rotolight illuminates the background but a strobe won’t. If he moves the strobe back so the softbox appear to be the same size as the Rotolight to the subject, it would light the background too. I think whatever tool Mark uses to get the pic he wants is the right tool. His easy manner with his subject is his strength
He starts off saying he's not technical and I think that may explain his difficulty in describing the "how" of his images. I agree that the constant lighting he's using is working with his interaction with the subjects vs how it looks in the capture. If anything, it calls back to old Hollywood fresnels/hot lights. (minus 2kw of tungsten heating element)
It's a matter of personal preference. It's a matter of what is more familiar and intuitive for the photographer. Digital and strobe lights are not as familiar to him, as he's used analog for years.
@@romiemiller2485 Well, I'd certainly agree he came from the film era, but strobes are hardly new. If you were studio shooting in the 70's to 90's, you almost certainly had Speedo or Norman pack and head systems. If anything, what he's missed is the fine output control new lights have vs the crude control the old lights had. Not to mention, you were shooting slow film and slow lenses so you needed a freeking lightning bolt.
@@jimfeldman4035 True, but some people like continuous light. I use it when the subject may have medical issues with flashes, some pets, etc.
@@romiemiller2485 True, but now you've gotten away from his use. I don't use strobe around newborns for instance. I think one the biggest reasons (for me) to invest in LED lighting is the potential use in video and tabletop, but I still see COB lighting tech advancing (particularly in CRI and brightness adjustment w/o strobing) so I'm not committing yet.
Really liked this video, showing how to do portraiture with a simple setup, excellent pictures with little to none post processing, and yes it also a sales pitch for the lighting, do we really need the negative comments? Jeez look at his portfolio and he's getting questioned about knowing what he's doing, great video and thank you B&H for these sessions..
It's that he's saying things that aren't true. If you came for the slideshow, then you're going to be well served. But it you came to learn, you are being LIED TO. Negative comments are expressing that sentiment for the most part. Read them instead of counting them.
As someone who gets paid to educate, this BH eventspace episode really bothers me. The speaker night be the Dalai Llama of kindness, but his ability to speak truthfully about strobes vs constant lighting is as accurate as me saying Dalai Llama.

His comment about the strobe falling off faster is beyond stupid. This guy has no idea how light behaves and is doing a b&h presentation??? I expected before from B&H
Yeah, it like B&H forgot they make way more money selling strobes lol. This guy is great for people with little knowledge and lots of money.
@@peerlessportraitsI’m sure we are more interested in how each person approaches his subjects. If you want to use strobe use strobe. If you think he’s not understanding inverse square law who cares.
Maybe his shutter speed is slower than using flash so yeah background will get more light

Do you prefer to use Strobes or Continuous lighting?
Continuous lightning. Do you have links to the rotalights and equipment he is referring to?
Strobes= freeze motion and lower ISO than cont light
Depending on what I am shooting but I like Strobes for most photoshoots.
When doing infant and pet portaits. Dogs blink unbelievably fast, and infants can be startled by strobes, butb give curious looks and expressions for constant lighting.

You can buy 2-3 Godox Sl-60 or Sl-150 led lamps, some good lightstands, diffusors and so on for the same price of ONE of these Rotolights, which is not even better.
@@S-K42yeah but people who came here didn’t come to see Godox so no one cares. And yes I do own Godox. Probably way more then you’ll ever own
Saying that continuous light is somehow different than strobe in terms of image quality is silly - photons are photons! Shooting with continuous your ISO is probably higher, your F-stop lower, you can shoot faster without waiting for a strobe recycle, your subjects don't see the blinding flash of the strobe, and WYSIWYG... All of those things may create images that feel more organic to some- but it is NOT the lights - being hired by Rotolight for the talk not withstanding!

If these lights work for him that makes him feel that the look is more like film instead of digital so let him be.
I have to say with mirrorless and using LiveView more that continuous Lighting will become the norm and flash will be for specialized shooting effects.
Also, there are a lot of points that I don't agree with like Flash being too powerful! No, and that's the point and designed to be powerful. Flash falls off to fast when the flash is close to the model, That's the law of light and I don't think he's got a good grasp on using light especially flash/Strobes.

This really is just an add for Rotolight. The reason he thinks they are more film like than strobe is because he isn't technical enough to know how to use strobes. Obviously continuous lights are WYSIWYG, so you don't have to visualize what the strobe can do. I see this with my less advanced students all the time, they only use continuous lights because they won't take the time to learn how strobes work and the inverse square law. Since you just move the lights around so you can see whats happening with continuous light it's much easier but flash is so much more versatile. You can do a lot more with strobes and they are a lot cheaper. I don't want to take away this gentleman's skill with connecting to his subjects but he isn't the guy I would want selling my gear. My gosh he can't even remember the names of these famous people he has photographed. I can still remember people names I shot at a wedding 10 years ago. I have tried Rotolights and they are okay, but they are so expensive for what they are it is easy to get similar results at a fraction of the cost. However if you have the money they sure are pretty.
Also how can you forget Margo Robbie, one of the most beautiful woman in the world.
Amen. No discipline. It bugs me that he doesn't even have the respect for his subjects to remember their names. Or he's being hipster and pretending he doesn't remember them. Just overall irritating.
He didn't even remember the names of the lights he was using! That's how special rotolights are compared to less expensive alternatives.

Rotolight lights are great but only for studio or indoors, basically useless outdoors

I got 2 sets off the AEOS 2 about a year ago, that’s for lights total. I didn’t notice that they didn’t come with batteries. I saved for a whole year to get these lights to use outside. They are extremely $$$$$$$$! So, now I saving for the 4 batterers and charger which are $$$$$$. So, one day I’ll be able to go out and use them, next time I’ll read a little better when purchasing things! I have tried using them with the wall plug-ins, but then there are wires all over the place and I can see it frustrates the models. They walk into a photo shot and see the floor occupied with black wires and kind of of gives an unprofessional vibe. I play with the toys we got right.
Buy portable battery packs
Ai can accomplish this. It's all in the software. Hardware is becoming less. Most clients don't know all the dynamics behind taking photos and they wouldn't know the difference.
