  • 1981 Turbo Esprit. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. One of only 143 built to Colin Chapman's original specification which included dry sump lubrication. This example also has the full 'Essex spec' - air con, full red leather interior, Panasonic Cockpit roof stereo, light weight Compomotive 3-piece split rims. Identical to the exploding 'For Your Eyes Only' car (apart from the colour of the leather).

    Well done. I honestly think the Guigiaro Esprit is one of the most beautiful cars of all all time. I will own one some day. I'm always a bit tempted by the newer version simply because it is a more modern car, but the early cars are just so much more beautiful and special that I know would be shortchanging myself to settle for the Stevens version.

      +PieterA the plan was to do a youtube jukebox of 1981 tracks played on the Panasonic Cockpit cassette player. Uploaded track 1 hoping it wouldn't get noticed by the tubebots but it was spotted straight away so no way round that I'm afraid. Hence the use of TH-cam library music. Nevermind, at least the car's original!

    I had one of these back in the 1980s. A dry sump turbo but without the roof console stereo. It was Calypso red with a magnolia leather interior. The wheels were BBS as opposed to the Compomotives seen in this video. Registered in April 1982 I think. I was 28 years old when I bought it.
    It was a very quick car then comparable with the Ferrari 328 and the Porsche 911. It was also very reliable and a joy to drive.
    It was my first fix in what became a very serious Lotus habit.

      The killer expense back in the 1980s was keeping the thing supplied with rear tyres. Back then a pair of NCT2s were more than four hundred pounds a pair and they lasted around ten thousand miles.
      I kept the car for seven years and it was very reliable. The only big non scheduled replacement was a new clutch.

    • @alanbetts8007
      @alanbetts8007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DucatiPaso750
      The dry sump gave no trouble in the seven years that I had the car. No special start up procedure described in the owner's manual. I just started it like any other car. Checking the oil level was different to a wet sump car and the procedure is covered in the owner's manual.

    Love it ! Always have! Own 3 Porsches and now I'm craving one! My mechanic loves them and owns two, an 85 and 86!
    I'm currently looking for a 83-86 Esprit turbo clean well maintained and driven often, here in Orlando Florida! Wish me luck ! Those are Toyota Corolla tail lights. Most people don't know that these were mostly a parts bin built car.

    • @DrPittenstein
      @DrPittenstein  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's very well known in the UK where all the various parts came from. Don't forget that Ferrari were using Fiat parts at this time also. In many ways the build and engineering on the Esprit is better than an early 80s Ferrari!

    what is the reason why the number plate changes at 4:25? I have loved this car since is was 11 years old, especially this colour combination with red pinstripes. I have a tommi makinen like you, and I was wondering how they compare to the esprit.

    • @DrPittenstein
      @DrPittenstein  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found a better numberplate! You might notice the wheels change also, that clip was shot a while back. We must be a similar age John, I was 11 when FYEO came out and also wanted one ever since. I was lucky to find this car for sale so jumped on it. Haven't seen a better one for sale since. The TME is much faster in all respects but the Esprit still feels very grippy on modern rubber. Way ahead of its time really, remarkably little lag. Astonishing for 1981.
