I think the theme of this song, as it relates to people who are locked up in a sanitarium and kept against their will, also relates to modern practices of over medicating people. It is no longer a physical building, but now it is a chemical sanitarium where people are medicated beyond being able to function freely. And rather than treating the underlying mental issues, people are sedated or prescribed ridiculous cocktails of harmful medications that may limit extreme behavior, but result only in repressing unhealthy thought patterns. Have worked in mental health many years and have seen this far too often. Love this song.

The general concept of a sanitarium in the United States is almost solely one of a mental institution (insane asylum, for an older term), which is a cultural detail that I hope clears the lyrical definition a little bit. The way it's written, the protagonist is in the asylum, restrained, with the staff not so much assisting but attempting to convince him that he is actually insane... and perhaps he was, given how hard the mirror stares back and how friendly a word 'kill' becomes.
Or perhaps the sane protagonist was eventually driven insane by the treatment the asylum provided. Who is to say? All we have are the results, an insurrection.
As someone else pointed out, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Flew_Over_the_Cuckoo%27s_Nest_(novel) is a likely basis.

Someday Metallica will be spoken of as classical as in Bach or Mozart. Truly great.

It's interesting that when great white was asked about the beginning part they thought well that's interesting that it sounds quite a bit like the beginning of Streetkiller which came out about a couple of years earlier but I didn't get the impression that it was intentional and just a coincidence but interesting.

This song at one time had nearly 1000 plays on my itunes, one of my absolute favorites!
That's what has always made Metallica stand out to me, the level of crispness and cleanliness while still being heavy. That's what I love so much about them is how you can easily tell where the music is going, there's nothing confusing or muddled, it's all very clear and each riff is carefully designed to clearly portray the emotion. Lots of metal bands tend to get very muddy sounding and unclear, Metallica to me has always sounded like the Rush of metal.

I can't hear this song without thinking of the documentary Paradise Lost about the West Memphis Three.

I had actually just suggested this song on the most recent Metallica reaction, so I was excited to see that you guys actually did this song. They say this song is based on the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. And you guys compared this to Master Of Puppets in some ways, so I think it’s worth pointing out the fact that the entire Master Of Puppets album deals with the theme of being under control in some form. I don’t know about the first and last song on the album, but all the other songs in between deal with that theme. If you guys ever get into full albums, that would be a good place to start.

I'm new to your channel! Love your reactions! Would love to see you react to Metallica "Orion". It is and instrumental song but it takes you through a journey of emotions as you let the song let your mind wander... One of the greatest instrumental songs ever written in my opinion! Take care!!
