Same here. I was in my 20's when I heard this, and instantly knew it was destined for more. Hearing it belted out like this, just brings out so much emotion in me.
Not A Ramen Noodle i kinda understand what you mean i didnt cry and this wasnt the song i listened to as a kid but there were two songs that i listened to as a child and it took me more than 4 years to find it and i did i found both songs and i am older now so i added both to a playlist and it gives me so much happiness
It always amazes me how the instrumental part of 'Once Upon A December' sounds nostalgic and it's like it's really taking us back to the year of the Romanovs.
It's amazing how many people are mad about a lack of dress change. I mean, here I was, amazed by how ethereal the "ghosts" looked (although I get that's a relatively easy effect to make) and touched by the emotion in the singing. Amazing performance, and I was really disappointed to not see more Tony nominations for this production.
Whitney Pyant I know more than you think. He became Tsar in 1894, not long after the death of his father, Tsar Alexander III. His wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, wasn't actually fully orthodox until 1896. Together, they had a total of 5 children: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia (OTMA), and Alexis. In the midst of WWI, thoughts towards the Tsar and Tsarina were very low. Many thought that Alexandra was a german spy, and that Nicholas was just a puppet of Rasputin. In 1917, he abdicated the throne and he and his family were put under house arrest. A few months later, the family was moved to a home in Tobolsk, where they stayed until they were again transferred in 1918 with the fall of the Provisional Government and the rise of the Bolshevik party (aka Lenin). The Tsar and his family were treated awful, not even being allowed to open a window. On July 16-17, 1918, the family and their four servants were awakened and taken downstairs. There, each one was brutally killed, the Tsar being the first to die. If there's anything else you'd like to know, just let me know
I love everything about this scene- the actors are obviously AMAZING but I'm gonna take a sec to appreciate the lighting designers and costume designers!! Seriously, it looks INCREDIBLE. Also, for the actors, on top of their obvious talent I respect them VERY MUCH for wearing those costumes. Under stage lights, they must be BOILING.
Christy is my idol. I saw Anastasia a few days ago, and ran into her afterwards. I told her how I literally want to be her when I grow up, and she told me how I need to be my best self first, and gave me a huge peptalk and lots of advice!!! She's so nice and sweet...
@@clownprincessoffear8204 so what? What's wrong with an alto renditition of the song anyway? Also the song can sound good even sung in a lower register, you sound like you hate alto ranges or something ?
@@clownprincessoffear8204 there's enough sopranos. Her doing an alto version doesn't make her worse. It sounds just as good. The "ew God no" was really unessesary
I love Disney, but Anastasia is a masterpiece. I think it's better than any Disney film I've seen. Edit: I know that Anastasia isn't a Disney film. That's the whole point of this comment, I like Anastasia more than Disney.
saw this yesterday, absolutly fantastic show. For those yelling about film loyalty, the production leaned more towards the 1960s Anastasia (more realistic) movie than the cartoon. Only a few of the songs from the movie are kept in. Still a great show and I highly recommend it
I cannot wait to see this show. This clip alone is making me tear up; I have wanted a stage production of the film ever since I was about 8-years-old, and I'm so curious about the story changes (especially the addition of "Gleb," instead of Rasputin). Plus.. the guy playing Dmitry is so cute!! ^///^
literally just got home from seeing this play and holy crap it was beautiful and during this part *spoiler...I guess* they have projections on the walls of the dancing people and sitting right next to them is breathtaking
Help me please. I've been trapped for days now between The Neva Flows, My Pettesburg and Once Upon a December. They're just soo good and work so well together!
Wow she is seriously the perfect woman for this role. Face, voice everything the little girl in me would have wanted my hero to be like in real life. I love this movie. Can't wait to see this!!
This is my new favorite broadway play. I was shivering throughout this entire scene because I had so many chills. Absolutely breathtaking and beautiful
Thank you soooooooooooooooooo much for sharing footage from this particular scene! Very greatly appreciated. Amidst the spectacle and majesty of this number. At the core is Chrsity Altomare's heartache as our leading lady. As such she proves what a gem of a performer she is. Despite the sets and costumes which are epic and beautiful. She is really what you want to focus on. It's the moment a star is born. GO CHRISTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Look, I love the costume change in the movie, but honestly I think the lack of one here works for how the musical was going for a more realistic route than the movie.
i think it's a great touch to differentiate the reality & the vision that anya's experiencing. it left a sorrow sense for the viewers, how her current life was drastically different with how she grew up with before the attack on her family. it leaves room for the viewers to imagine what her life could have been but still remained in tact with the reality of it through her clothes
This is so beautiful! It's everything I dreamed of the Anastasia musical to look! And this woman who plays Anastasia is SOO TALENTED and dedicated to her role with such a beautiful strong voice!!!
This show is amazing! I was lucky enough to see it in Hartford, CT before it moved to Broadway and I am dying to see it again. Every element of the production is outstanding, the music, the set, the tech, the costumes, the talent, the story...truly enchanting! Run...don't walk, to see it!! Seriously!
When I go see this show, I'm gonna be crying through pretty much the whole thing, they'll have to carry me away on a stretcher. This song and Journey to the Past are enough to instill tons of childhood memories in me!! I hope I get to see this show soon!!
SAME, I went to Disneyland in February 2017. I was in that ride, were in the ballroom part as the ride stops, my brother next to me tell me to sing Once Upon a December and I singing at the dancing ghosts.
See, Don Bluth, it is possible to do this sequence in a stage version. What's not possible is changing Anya's orphan dress into a ball gown while she's singing and dancing. Too bad; I love that part in the movie.
I stand with WADA Which makes absolutely no sense if it's supposed to be with her Grandmother when it triggers her memories of their relationship *and* where they sing the original lyrics of the song showing us that Anastasia's memory loss has been dispelled.
it is possible to do an on-stage costume change. They did that for Cinderella. I think they wanted to save the makeover for later to maximize the awe effect
Saw this for my birthday and I have to say, it was fantastic! It went for a more realistic tone than the movie, with the "Reds" being the antagonists instead of Rasputin. It definitely had me on edge toward the end, but overall, it was very well done.
I am in LOVE. Chrissy is amazing at acting through her voice and facial gestures; and everything, from the cinematography to the choreography and harmonies gave me the chills😍😭❤ I only wish the video was complete
I just saw this last night. Not only is this a fantastic show, but Christy Altomare is so sweet! She was signing autographs and talking to everyone individually, even though it was pouring rain :)
This is awesome, but I always found it very moving when the tsar danced with Anastasia and kissed her forehead at the end of the song. I would have loved to see that moment on the stage version, too!
Yes! This was exactly the first thought that came to mind, it's such a powerful scene in the film as in the beginning we see her dance with her father as a child. This show has beauty in its own right but I found myself disappointed more than once with this production.
I cant wait too see this when they tour, the only thing I missed from this song was when she dances with her dad, that bit always gets me in the film 😢
I saw this on broadway with my school, and it was my first broadway musical and IT SET A HIGH BAR FOR FUTURE MUSICALS I SEE, I HAD GOOSEBUMPS THE WHOLE TIME
I would pay so much to have this quality of performance on a screen. Nothing like live performance, but distance and time do not agree with my love of this musical. Can't wait for the tour to hit the west coast next year!

It's so chilling to see those ghost being projected around the theater it makes it even more chilling
wow they did that ?
Omg yes! It gave me goosebumps!
Hot Chocolate With Luna it's even more chilling thinking that's her whole family that died :(
Hot Chocolate With Luna I thought they were actors dressed as ghosts
YES! It made that point in the show an amazing memory for me and my daughter....it's like the audience was suddenly transported inside Anya's mind.
I love how the braid in her hair sort of resembles the crown the Russian royalty wore
A tiara
Nicholas and Alexandra!! And... it's just so beautiful!!! I can't handle it!!!!

Anastasia is brought by 20th Century Fox.
That is the point. They love this more than Disney.

THAT KEY CHANGE THOUGH!

Bruh, that perfect timing of both the Czar and Tsarina looking back at her was friggin amazing.
This song never fails to give me chills. Better yet, everything Anastasia gives me chills.
Look, I love the costume change in the movie, but honestly I think the lack of one here works for how the musical was going for a more realistic route than the movie.
I think they could have done a costume change had they made it so this happened in Anyas dreams while she was sleeping.
If you are going to have the ghostly images dancing around here you might as well have a costume change. It would be more consistent with her memory.
i think it's a great touch to differentiate the reality & the vision that anya's experiencing. it left a sorrow sense for the viewers, how her current life was drastically different with how she grew up with before the attack on her family. it leaves room for the viewers to imagine what her life could have been but still remained in tact with the reality of it through her clothes
They could've still done a quick change

Trust me, go and see Aladdin before you make an assumption... it's unbelievable and totally enriches the movie even further you won't regret it.
