When I climbed cinder cone in 1980, that hole in the middle was at least 60 - 80 feet deep if not more and was only about 15' to 20' wide. It bottomed out on frozen lava that looked incredibly fresh. I don't know what happened in 18 years but when I climbed it again in 1998, it looked like your film. In 18 years it underwent more erosion than the previous 150 years of it's existence (it was first reported by people who were trekking out on the pioneer trail, whereas people trekking out in years before that said it didn't exist then. So it apparently showed up in the mid eighteen hundreds, which makes sense since there was a major Lassen eruption in the 1920's).
Love how you describe the areas you are in and point out specific spots. Allows us to research those areas to educate ourselves. Love the morning light on the mountain. Everyone should experience that at least once in their lifetime. Continue to be safe.
Thousands of people visit Lassen Park every week from all over the country, that's why it's very well stocked... I live about an hrs away from that entrance so we frequent the park regularly

@@SUVRVing thanks. I hadn't seen that one yet. I camped at the usfs coground ar Manzanita Lake. Didn't fish there. But there were plenty of trout I could see cruising the shallows. It's a natural lake formed by volcanic flow blocking a creek.

We visited Lassen during our trip out West in 2018. It April 25th and there was still quite a bit of snow all over the place. They were still working on clearing snow up on the road in the park even though we never saw them. My wife used her snow shoes some and then we walked up the road for a ways and back. A few people around but very few and the weather was bright and sunny.
When I was in geology class in college we climbed a cinder cone and it was two steps up and slide back one. That was the most tiring climb I had ever done.
I went through there on my way driving to ALASKA 3 years ago. Some area was closed for hiking because so much snow that winter, although it was June Watching this make me want to do it all over again to ALASKA. I too solo traveler and hiker, enjoy your channel. Thx
Yosemite is one of those places where those that can hike can truly experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, yet so many people in the lower valley don't bother doing. I've got to do all sorts of stuff in lassen or yosemite. It helps when you work in helitack firefighting.

I don't know if I'd hike the John Muir Trail again anytime soon. I absolutely loved it, but there are lots of other trails out there still that I haven't done. Maybe in 20 years when I have a kid old enough to hike it with! Thanks Davin.
Thanks for such a great video of your adventure from Butte Lake to Snag Lake. This is the first video of yours that I had the pleasure of watching. You do such a wonderful job of capturing the areas that you hike and provide great narratives as well. I continued to watch two more...the kayaking of Butte Lake, and the hike from Warner Springs to Hells Kitchen. I am planning on going to Lassen National Park in two days and camping in our Truck Camper in the Park at Manzanita Lake one night, two nights at Butte Lake and dispersed camping in the Lassen National Forest land as well. I plan to day hike from Butte Lake to Snag Lake and then on over to Lower Twin Lake and back to Butte Lake. This hike will be 14.5 miles in total and I plan to hike up to the Cinder cone and check the top out as well after viewing your angle of the painted dunes and the fantastic lava bed. I plan on kayaking Butte Lake as well. I live near Sacramento and 2 years ago set out to visit all of the California Lakes (over 500) that are 50 surface acres or larger. I have currently visited and photographed 378 lakes and Butte Lake, Snag Lake and Lower Twin Lake are on my list of lakes to visit and take photos. In addition, I have decided to make it a bucket list to visit all of the National Parks as well. Thank you once again for sharing your wonderful adventures and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Hope to see you on the trail sometime!
I took a small tour (6-8 people) and they took us off the beaten path. Yeah Old Faithful was super crowded, but there are all sorts of other small geysers, small pools, where very few/ if any other people were. So this would be an option for some people where it's not super crowded. One needs to look around and not just take the first place they see. This is a wonderful video. Really enjoyed it.

What gear exactly? The backpacking/camping gear? It's a bit tricky because I've made so much of my own stuff. My backpack, sleeping bag, and shelter are all ones that I made, so talking about them isn't something that will be relevant to a lot of people. Maybe a video on general ultralight backpacking principles would be helpful? My backpack, sleeping bag, and bivy sacks together weigh less than some people's backpacks alone! Anyway, let me know what exactly you'd like to know more about and I'll try to answer. Thanks Radnally.

btw if you are looking for an easy access nonprimitive campsite in lassen area that is in a cindercone, consider little crater lake. It's on crater mountain off of hwy 44 near the bogard usfs station. It's closed when the snow starts for the season but it's loaded with fish and has nice big ponderosa pines in the campground.

How does that mat thingy compare to an air mattress? I have had good and bad experiences with air mattresses (twin, full, and queen) I would try one of those compact dealies, if it were comfortable enough. Is it just a scaled down version, or does it perform better in your opinion?
This video brings me back to "wilderness mode". The walking pace, the hiking sound, the quiet surrounding, the crisp freshness, the variety wild lives, the talking when all above becomes part of you.... Does the thermo pad keep the ground coldness from conducting? I usually wake up at midnight when camp.

At least text someone your location before you go out and again when you're back in your vehicle. That way if they don't hear from you, they know your last location and come look. You could fall in a hole, sprang your ankle, get caught between two rocks, be a bear's lunch, etc.
That was a great hike! No surprise that you encountered snow on the ground still considering how much snow there was when I was there in mid-May. I definitely want to get back there in the future but like later in the warm season to maximize higher elevation hiking options away from the crowds. That seems to be true for the Pacific NW in general.
Lassen is such a cool park. Tons to see and do there. I can't wait to get back myself. And yeah, getting the season right in the PNW is tricky. Snow, rain, mosquitoes... all part of the fun!
first 2 years that i lived in Chester just a few miles west of the park we had snow 20 foot at the office measuring site and 2nd year 22 feet then the last 9 years before i moved to Idaho it averaged 8 to 12 feet, great fishing and 4 wheel trails

Lassen NP for years, but haven’t made it yet....kinda surprised you don’t bring a way to just build yourself a small fire to keep warm in mornings til temps warm up....just lkke a knkfe even to make shavings and a ferro rod and striker to make sparks....even a few fatwood sticks...seems like it would make your mornings a bit more enjoyable to be warm
Lots of reasons to not have a fire. I don't like smelling like smoke on multi-day trips, so I very rarely make fires. The time and energy spent making one on a trip like this would be better used just hiking. Hiking is a great way to warm yourself up. And finally, campfires are allowed in Lassen Volcanic NP only in fire rings at the campgrounds. They're not even allowed in the backcountry.
