I've always liked this song, but recently my friend from the Navy came home and while we were hanging out, this song came on. I expected he wouldn't like it, so I skipped it. He instantly told me to go back and play it, and I did. As it played I glanced over at him while he sang and the glimmer in his eyes was the cutest thing I've ever seen. I'm not in love with him, but I definitely have strong feelings for him. Something about him I've never noticed came to light the couple days we were with each other. I heard Golden Hour, four days ago. It lifted me to a place in the stars. I felt open to my son’s love again. Spinning and twirling in space with him. This beautiful song transcends time and space. It allowed me to communicate with my son again.

This was one of her favorite songs. She always said that this song maked her think of me, so she dedicated and sang it to me many times, but for some reason, i never really liked it. However, I also agree that the melody helps in creating that atmosphere ! ^^ Compared to the verses, the vocal range used in the chorus is very wide ^^ However, when singing the higher notes, on " golden hour ", he's using head voice, which has a lighter sound quality than the register he uses for " shine " at the beginning of the chorus (which would be more of a chest/mix kind of register) ! ^^ This helps creating contrast, which make the thing very pleasing to listen to ! ^^
We can also look at the chord progression to see what makes it special ! ^^ The first thing I noticed is that the recording is not in A 440, which means that it will sound slightly lower that the notes we're used to (assuming 12-TET is our reference) ^^ But let's put that aside and let's look at the chords ! ^^
The chords in the chorus are : Amaj7 | Amaj7 - Am(maj9) | Emaj7 | Emaj7 - Em7(b5) or Em(maj7) - G#7(b13) ^^
So in terms of degree we have IV | IV - iv | I | I - ii°/bVII or bvi/bIII - III (or V/bvi) ^^ Aside from the end (where I'm not to sure of the chords, I tried to find them based on their sounds), it's very " simple " in terms of scale degrees. However, the strong asset of this chord progression is the Am(maj9), because it uses a C natural, which is the b6 in the key of E major (the key of the chorus) ! ^^ This note in particular is very often used to evoke feelings of melancholy/nostalgia ! ^^
Aside from that, I think that the chord progression is really logical if we look at when each chord is played compared to the lyrics of the chorus ! For example : the first Amaj7 comes with the word " shine " ^^ maj7 chords often have a very soothing and soft sound ! They have a very " dreamlike " quality to them which perfectly suits the word sung over it ! ^^ Later in the chorus, under the " golden hour " part, we have the chord change from Am(maj9) to Emaj7 ^^ This uses the b6 discussed earlier to make the E chord sounds more powerful (because C is a semitone apart from B, one of the notes of said E chord) ^^ The fact that it's a maj7 chord gives an almost ethereal quality to this " golden hour ", making it seem that it is a very special moment ! ^^
Without going into too much details (or at least, without going into more details than I already have, because my comment is starting to get pretty long), it's a very beautiful chorus ! ^^ The whole song is very great ! ^^
every time i hear this song, i think about how perfect the world could be. bright blue sky with sunlight shining on a city, people all happy with no worries and everything seems so bright. i dont think about a girl, but more of a sunset on a rooftop of a building, the beauty of the world. this song made me fall in love.

Yall this song is MAGICAL. Just yesterday I helped out with a really good friend's wedding and they chose this song for her aisle walk. The ushers were in front of her and they separated at "S H I N E" and just- even when they played the song at the rehearsal I had to stop myself from tearing up. It was like living in a fairy tale. Me & my wife listened to this song on a daily basis but, she died today from falling ill after a stomach surgery... This song reminds me of all the memories I've had with her. There's not only piano being played in minor note but you can hear voilin, and castanets being played as well, basically classical instruments. mixed with electronic piano notes of today's era. you just have to listen and you'll understand what sara means.
