This was one of her favorite songs. She always said that this song maked her think of me, so she dedicated and sang it to me many times, but for some reason, i never really liked it. It's a love song, but the melancholic vibe always brought me thoughts of losing her, and I didn't want to think about it. Now it's real. She left me. This made me feel emotional.. not just the words, but the instrumental music on its own as well... Makes me think of a story of two lovers, how one support the other when they're feeling down and not being able to pursue their passion... But this one here tells them that it's their time to shine... And they do.

I've always liked this song, but recently my friend from the Navy came home and while we were hanging out, this song came on. I expected he wouldn't like it, so I skipped it. He instantly told me to go back and play it, and I did. As it played I glanced over at him while he sang and the glimmer in his eyes was the cutest thing I've ever seen. I'm not in love with him, but I definitely have strong feelings for him. Something about him I've never noticed came to light the couple days we were with each other. It's the chord progression, as well as the melody, that's giving you that feeling, the fourth minor to the first is one of the most beautiful progressions, and tends to have that reassuring yet melancholic sound :)

However, I also agree that the melody helps in creating that atmosphere ! ^^ Compared to the verses, the vocal range used in the chorus is very wide ^^ However, when singing the higher notes, on " golden hour ", he's using head voice, which has a lighter sound quality than the register he uses for " shine " at the beginning of the chorus (which would be more of a chest/mix kind of register) ! ^^ This helps creating contrast, which make the thing very pleasing to listen to ! ^^
We can also look at the chord progression to see what makes it special ! ^^ The first thing I noticed is that the recording is not in A 440, which means that it will sound slightly lower that the notes we're used to (assuming 12-TET is our reference) ^^ But let's put that aside and let's look at the chords ! ^^
The chords in the chorus are : Amaj7 | Amaj7 - Am(maj9) | Emaj7 | Emaj7 - Em7(b5) or Em(maj7) - G#7(b13) ^^
So in terms of degree we have IV | IV - iv | I | I - ii°/bVII or bvi/bIII - III (or V/bvi) ^^ Aside from the end (where I'm not to sure of the chords, I tried to find them based on their sounds), it's very " simple " in terms of scale degrees. However, the strong asset of this chord progression is the Am(maj9), because it uses a C natural, which is the b6 in the key of E major (the key of the chorus) ! ^^ This note in particular is very often used to evoke feelings of melancholy/nostalgia ! ^^
Aside from that, I think that the chord progression is really logical if we look at when each chord is played compared to the lyrics of the chorus ! For example : the first Amaj7 comes with the word " shine " ^^ maj7 chords often have a very soothing and soft sound ! They have a very " dreamlike " quality to them which perfectly suits the word sung over it ! ^^ Later in the chorus, under the " golden hour " part, we have the chord change from Am(maj9) to Emaj7 ^^ This uses the b6 discussed earlier to make the E chord sounds more powerful (because C is a semitone apart from B, one of the notes of said E chord) ^^ The fact that it's a maj7 chord gives an almost ethereal quality to this " golden hour ", making it seem that it is a very special moment ! ^^
Without going into too much details (or at least, without going into more details than I already have, because my comment is starting to get pretty long), it's a very beautiful chorus ! ^^ The whole song is very great ! ^^

Yall this song is MAGICAL. Just yesterday I helped out with a really good friend's wedding and they chose this song for her aisle walk. The ushers were in front of her and they separated at "S H I N E" and just- even when they played the song at the rehearsal I had to stop myself from tearing up. It was like living in a fairy tale. It was so perfect in every way and I couldn't be happier for them both. They fought for what they have and they deserve it so, so much. There's not only piano being played in minor note but you can hear voilin, and castanets being played as well, basically classical instruments. mixed with electronic piano notes of today's era. you just have to listen and you'll understand what sara means.
