Trains don't rush anywhere in India, there would be carnage on the tracks if they did, it is nice to have enough time to see people going about their daily lives.
I can't congratulate you enough Tim. This is better than spoken documentary. The glimpses of life you show from the train show far more than a spoken travelogue. At 73 I like the accompanying music. However you manange to finance this, keep it up please.
+John Timbrell Hi John, I love to to travel whenever I can and making these videos allows me to re-live some of my trips. I find TH-cam a generally rewarding experience, I often leave the videos playing on my computer when I am working as it reminds me that it is work that pays for my travels, then work seams OK
Thank you,Tim, for Part 2 as well. How awesome to see close up the ascent up the foothills of the highest mountains on Earth! I do not recall Solan being such a large town, full of thousands of multi-storied houses covering the mountainside. But that was back in the 1960's and 70's and the population of India has more than doubled since then. You are so right about this train ride being a life experience - especially after the unbearable heat, dust ,crowds and noise of the plains.
There is something disturbing about this. It's the transitioning, the giving in to change, the acceptance. The music, switching from Bollywood style, to what could be Anuska Shankar and friend with tabla. Only a soul who know the sorrows of the sounds, from a familiar loco, like those in Shimla or Siliguri. The locos change. The music changes. The people change. Each one of us, who watches this, are changed. But the surrounding beauty remains. You have captured a tremendous emotion, with this. It is healing, and growth.
Hi J.C, I traveled aboard the 'Himalayan Queen' taking just over 5 hours for the trip. The seats are a little small and not well padded, for me this was not a problem as I was filming from an open door. Some other trains are more comfortable. It is a long time before the first refreshment stop, so it may be a good idea to take a drink with you. This is a wonderful journey, I hope you enjoy it as much as my wife and I did. Tim.
Nice video, and Solan is one of my favorite place in the world, i see it long away from chennai by this video thanks a lot for sharing, and i was the 3499 viewer of this video and my mob no ends with the same 3499 i was so happy while seeing it:)
Hi, as I had filmed almost all of the line from cab, it seemed a shame not share it, especially as the various loops, tunnels and viaducts are best seen from the front. But 5 hours is too much to expect anyone to endure, so I decided to split it into 2 parts speed-ed up by 5 times. I tried 10 x full speed, great for lovers of roller coasters, but too fast to show any detail. I am working on part 3, it should be on You Tube before the end of the weekend, this is my favorite part of the trip.
lots of kids either going to school or home..nice to see them in uniforms....an amazing railway ...homes range from tumbledown shacks to high rise apartments...pity it was a misty day....as the scenery is amazing to see....the track is well-trodden along its whole length as must be the easiest way to take....that multi-arch structure is amazing...
This railway is Britain meets India. The days of the British rule are long gone, yet British influence is everywhere, the immaculate school uniforms reflect the history of Shimla. The track is also an unofficial footpath, I hope to return and cover this line again.
wah kya Dimag thaa Angrego ka . aaj puri dunia me jo bi Rail chal rahi hai wo sub Angrego ki hi den hai. ek pahar me rasta bana ker rail chalwana kmaal ka dimag thaa Angrego ka or Col Barog sahab ka wah.lakin aaj dukh ki baat hai ki shimla k rastey k kai station bandh hotey jaa rahey hai. or Dar is baat ka hai ki indian Railway kahi aney waley samay me is Anmol den ko bandh hi na ker dey.
Excellent video thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife and I are doing the trip in November, Have you any little bits of advice you could pass on?, for instance how long does it take to reach Shimla from Kalka? Many thanks in advance. J.C.
It may be comparatively small but it is NOT a "toy". Narrow guage is necessary for mountainous winding regions and this railway serves a very real, and necessary purpose.
You are absolutely correct to point out that the narrow gauge railways of India are not "Toys". they originally carried both freight and passengers, although most freight has been lost to road competition. I tried to find out when they became known as "Toy Railways", but appears it's a marketing slogan used by travel companies originating some when in the fifties referring to both the Darjeeling and Shimla railways. As you point out, the real reason behind the use of narrow gauge is that it is easier to construct in mountainous regions. To this day they are still mainly local passenger railways, although an increasing number of tourists are also carried.
India is definitely an interesting country to visit!! Have you ever visited Russia (or some other ex-Soviet republic)? we have many interesting railways to travel on! :)))))
India is a fascinating country. I have not been to Russia, but it is on my wishlist. I have posted videos taken in Bulgaria and Montenegro. I have just returned from a rail tour around the former Yugoslavia (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia). The railways were fascinating and I will start uploading videos from this tour shortly.
It is So unfortunate that the U.S. doesn't have train transport like most of the World. With the emphasis put upon cars & trucks, the poorest without cars have to stay home. AMTRAC rail services well-paid commuters. But there are NO town-to-town type trains whatsoever. Buses have even been cut these last 50 years to non-existence. Anyway one goes from town-to-town is just Stay Home. That's SO unfortunate.
I don,t understand doesn,t the goverment or the people have any respect for their land-soo much trash strewn around really makes it look bad for their country-wow.
Angrego ney Hinduatan ko apney samay me bahut kuch or Bahut Anmol Nayab virasat di thi lakin Indian Govt ney in sabko sambal nahi payi or aaj Dhirey Dhirey Hamarey Desh sey bahut kuch or Nayab cheezey or Virastey khatam si hoti jaa rahi hai.
Another great cab ride! Its nice to see a line where you can enjoy the journey rather than rush from A to B.

Hi, riding this train is a life experience, a window on the real India, one of the best experiences of my life 😊
Thank you for taking time to comment, I am enjoying editing the video film I took in India, as I reminds me of the wonderful time I spent there.

Still looking forward to part three. Not keen on the speeded up version although the concept does work for some occasions. Cheers.
Thank you.
Thanks for the advice I appreciate it.

what really surprises me is the amount of trash along the tracks. well done video, thank you
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The amount of rubbish surprised me, in China it would be picked up sorted and recycled.

A Freeman We know it's not a toy. Duh?
Nice comment, Thank you. Tim :)
Did I see some future Test cricketers playing alongside the line?

It would be nice to think so.

It looks like passengers throw their trash from the train. Mile after mile of refuse.
It's a bit scruffy in places, although Shimla itself was clean with very little litter.
Watched in 2024
If all goes to plan, I'll be posting a new version of this trip in 2025.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I will also join you from Salogra
@@Vivek-gamingff I'll see you there.
Khatgahat seems sad.

It does look untidy, but I got the impression things were changing for the better, Shimla itself was clean an tidy.
IF you watch at 16:05 someone in the carriage in front of the camera throws some rubbish out of the window. I guess this is normal.
