The picturesque village of Volendam in the 1930s in color! [AI enhanced & colorized]

  • Volendam is a fishing village on the former Zuiderzee in The Netherlands. Sinds this inner sea was enclosed by a 36 km dam called "De Afsluitdijk" in the 1930's the salt water has become sweet and the Zuiderzee became te IJsselmeer. This had a big impact on the fishing community. Fishing for eals and fresh water fish has now become their main activity. Other sources of income for Volendam used to be the cutting of reeds for the purpose of thatched roofs and other, but this practice has now almost gone.
    It has always been a very close community where everbody knows each other and many inhabitants are somehow related to each other. The village is also famous in the Netherlands for its pop music bands like BZN, The Cats and Jan Smit. Because of the eal fishing, this type of music is called "De Palingsound" (the "eal sound").
    As there are no cars visible in this film which could have given a clue about when the film was made; it is estimated to have been shot in the 1930's, but could be earlier. Any advise is welcome.
    The original B&W footage was kindly provided by Niels Haneveld and subsequently restored, speed-corrected, A.I. enhanced and A.I. colorized.

    Beautiful. Those traditional costumes are so ubiquitous I'm not surprised you had difficulty in dating the film. I guess the few men not wearing the traditional clothes give a hint that it might have been the 1930s. There's a guy around the 3.00 minute mark wearing a light raincoat who looks 1930s or even 1940s.
    I'd not seen those black conical hats that some of the young women were wearing before. Do they signify anything I wonder? Perhaps that the wearer was unmarried? Most of the other women seem to be wearing the distinctive white cap.

    For those who don't know, Volendam is/was a very closed city, the reason was that during the reform the city remained Catholic, but as it was located in the north it was surrounded by Protestant cities, Unlike other Catholic cities in the south of the Netherlands, being surrounded by hostile cities led to self-isolation (also the fact that the city sympathized with Spain in the eighty years War, It further fueled enmity with neighbors ).

    Thank you for giving us a more realistic view into the past with your enhanced videos. Black & white with scars and offset film is great for the perfectionists, but to look through time, as with a magic screen, the color and AI adjustments make it appear as we are there with them. Since watching your videos, I have come to think of the past in a different, more realistic light. I personally remember the 1950's, but time takes away the first person views as we lived them.. even my memory tries to picture life then in B&W.
    Thanks Rick.

    Ik vraag mij af of dit voor of na de afsluiting van de Zuiderzee (28 mei 1932) is geweest. Dat heeft een enorme impact op Volendam gehad. In het sanitair van de nieuwe jachthaven hangen mooie tableaus van het oude Volendam van voor de sluiting. Ik heb begrepen dat de vissers nooit de beloofde compensatie hebben gekregen….

    It was fascinating to see this slice of life from the recent past, with people going about their business in traditional clothing. Incidentally those cylindrical, slimy fish that I think you call paling in Dutch, are called eels in English, with two Es. I know you enjoy eating smoked eels in the Netherlands, whereas here in London in traditional pie and mash restaurants, they serve jellied eels.

    Ziet er goed uit! Mooi gestabiliseerd, mooie muziekkeuze. Korrel onderdrukking is goed gelukt, upscaling en inkleuring redelijk. Apart om te zien op 1:35 hoe de stabilisatie vaststelt op het hoofd. Wat voor afspeelsnelheid heb je gekozen? 12-15fps lijkt mij geïnterpoleerd naar?

    • @Rick88888888
      @Rick88888888  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      De uiteindelijke kwaliteit hangt altijd af van het bronmateriaal. A.I.'s kunnen geen details uit het niets toveren. De snelheid is tot 70% gereduceerd (dus uitgaande van 17 fps). De inkleuring kan beter, echter de maker van DeOldify ligt in bed met MyHeritage en heeft al meer dan 3 jaar geen nieuwe versie uitgebracht voor gewone stervelingen. Ook is er weinig vegetatie in de film. Groene bomen en struiken maken het altijd mooier.
