    Wow Denis is back. He will be very hard to beat if he keeps playing like this. His speed, power, and precision are incredible. Beautiful old school tennis. One-handed backhand is back hopefully.

      @@CertifiedCruella He was world No. 10 for 8 weeks in 2021 (plus one week in 2020). So he just barely fits the definition of a "former top 10 player". Top players need consistency, and Denis never had that. His game has always been risky, wild and full of errors. Even in Dallas, you can see that the matches could go either way, the margins in his game are small.

    If Shapo wins this tournament, i believe he will be 32 in the world based on my very superficial look at the live rankings. That is massive progress considering he was outside the top 100 as recently as September 2024, and had been outside the top 100 for nearly a year prior to that. This could be a huge year for him if he can consistently find this level of play. Dude beat Nadal in the second week of a major at one point (before Nadal’s body shut down), he can absolutely ball the fuck out when he is in top form.

    • @J.-M.
      @J.-M. 29 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      He never beat Nadal in a major. He beat him only twice, at Masters 1000 tournaments (in his first, and in his last match with Nadal). His loss to Nadal at the 2022 Australian Open, in particular, was one of the most spectacular choke jobs af all time, and a very significant sign of his mental problems that were ruining his career for years.

    • @pugsondrugs6556
      @pugsondrugs6556 20 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      @ fuck i apparently hallucinated him winning that AO match 😂. The win on clay at Rome that year is arguably even more impressive even though it was 2/3 format. But regardless, a 2-4 record against a 2022 or younger Nadal is a legit testament to the level he is capable of producing. Huge question as to whether he can sustain it though…

    Shapo's one-handed backhand is always more lethal than his forehand...

    • @J.-M.
      @J.-M. 3 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      Not always, but often. His backhand is great, but it's also because his forehand technique is problematic, which is one of the reasons why he's been struggling so much for so many years. I don't think I've ever seen a player who dumps so many forehands into the net, and even in this match you could tell in advance, long before he hit the shot, that he will dump the forehand deep into the net from certain positions. These forehand errors and misses are ingrained in his technique. It's just matches and weeks like this one when he has it more under control.

    I’ve noticed since his return from injury, Shapo has been making more of an effort to come forward and finish plays at the net. When his movement was still not at full capacity last year, it meant early losses and a more defensive mindset. But after the US Open he started to find his groove, and more importantly, shore up his backhand return.
    While that shot is still weak, his improved variety means that Shapo can find ways to neutralise the serve +1 with smarter angles or volleys. Good to see him back!

    I once saw Shapo double fault 4 times in a row. Probably the only guy who ever did that, kinda like how Happy Gilmore was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody. Watching him previously - his biggest issues were that his returning was awful, he'd spray tons of erros and had no idea how to construct rallies, and double faulted way too much. The double faults have been down a lot. His returning has been very solid as he's made most makeable returns. And in terms of rallies he really hasn't missed much outside of that first set vs Fritz. Playing with a little more margin at times and utilizing the back of the court and top spin he has on his shots and keeping the ball deep - which is what he should be doing. His weight of shot is enough that he doesn't need to go for broke early in rallies all the time. It's hard to outhit him and he moves well so he just needs to maintain a solid court position and wait for the right spot. I think he's destined to win tomorrow. Funny enough, I think his last final was vs Ruud years ago where he lost

      Btw, Shapo is probably one of the only guys on tour who would have a shot in hell to beat a guy like Sinner just because his top level is so high. On a hard court, Carlos just doesn't serve well enough imo. Zverev is screwed because he never hits a drop shot so everything he does is trying to go around Sinner which doesn't work - Sinner just neutralizes every ball. Meddy is now kinda washed up. DeMinaur is terrific, but he just doesn't do anything better than Sinner and gets hammered every time. Fritz and Paul probably don't have enough variety. Rune, Rublev, Shelton definitely no. It's hard to come up with anyone tbh. And Djokovic just may not move well enough at this point although I'd never count him out

    Problem with Shapo is inconsistency. Let’s see how long he can play well. Clay season is coming and that’s not his strong suit.

    Shapo wins tournament then plays horrible rest of the year. I don’t get my hopes up, he has done this many times. Hopefully, I’m wrong. Not pessimistic, just based on previous years watching him.
