They scratched when you put them on and were clinging on for dear life with puny elastic that often broke and took an eye out. Pumpkins? We had to carve a swede. A swede. Have you tried chopping a blo*dy swede? I'm surprised there wasn't an annual increase in the amount of home amputated fingers! Such a spesh time. 🙄

The jagged edged top is the best in my opinion. You have to pry it up. And, I think turnips were the original food that they carved. That would be so much harder! This is so enjoyable to watch❤
You inspired me to pick my own pumpkins and carve them this year! I did some witchy / pagan symbols on mine. I did a pentacle but only carved halfway through for that one, came out great!
to remove the insides of the pumpkins I usually use a blender whisk (like the one you use for whipping cream) and the remove everything, it's quicker and cleaner!
Brits and Irish used to carve turnips and in the 1800s took their traditions with them to America, but instead carved pumpkins. The tongue and lips is the Rolling stones logo I believe. Now I've made myself look like a know it all I'll defenestrate myself.
The knobby pumpkins have really thin skin, so the sugars leak out. The knobs are the sugar blistering through the skin. I just learned that this last week!

Originally it was turnips, it came from Ireland. My family used to always do turnip carving to be traditional & it was so effing difficult, but they do age into some mad creepy things.
We did very, little for Halloween, but had mischief night then bonfire night we dressed a "guy up in a wheelbarrow or pushchair and collected a penny for the guy and bought fireworks. We were in very little danger as the fireworks available at the time were crap. 👍👍

For those thick pumpkins get a drywall knife from a hardware store (drywall saw?) not sure which it is actually called, but they work really well.
