But even I, someone who thought herself enlightened, became angry the first time I read the 1619 Project. I sat the book aside and came back to it again after their words had time to get past emotion. When I reread the book, I understood better what they wanted me to know. I think this is a good day, a Sunday, to start rereading again.
Kudos to you for recognizing how big a part emotion plays in our cognitive process. The ability to come back to something that is uncomfortable to seek out the full value of it is commendable. I believe this is part of why our political situation of divisiveness is so bad right now. Neither side wants to recognize that there is no righteous side, that the situation is both complex and emotionally charged, and the sometimes (well most of the time) we don't receive information (spoken or written) while we're thinking about our response, our side, what we want to be heard. I’m still in the early stages of reading this book. I wish I had access to this type of information and history 30 years ago. It opens your eyes to so many truths and facts about what went on during that time. It has change my life, inspiring me to want to learn more about the past. When you visit the Jamestown settlement, where the first slaves arrived back in 1619, you will find the 1619 Project book in the little shop within the Museum. To Nicole Hannah-Jones, “You are brilliant and courageous”!!!!!!! Thank you for putting together such an important masterpiece of literature. I pray the next generation of young leaders gets introduced to this book a lot earlier than I did.
We have access to this information, we just didn’t seek it out. We didn’t listen to black voices, or read books by black people, like James Baldwin. I was a child when I learned this stuff (granted the book is brilliant and lays things out in an easily digestible way). But it was my parents that brought the information to me, then I just wanted to know more. Especially when visiting historic sites in the south. My challenge to you is to think about why you didn’t know these things, how is the system is set up for/against you? Blessings, and may you use your new knowledge to bless others.
I’m going to disregard your negative comment. You have no idea what I went through as a child. For you to tell me what I had and didn’t have access to is out of pocket. The state of our race within our community has completely eroded because of statements like the one you just made. The days of when our ancestors love, supported and lifted each other up through all that they went through is truly dead and probably never coming back. Your ugly comment just confirmed that. I appreciate the James Baldwin recommendation and blessings. Everything else you could have kept to yourself. I’m not going to let you ruin the journey I’m on. I know when someone is trying to talk down to me. Not having it!!!!!! You want to send me a blessing, please do not send me another comment. I don’t want to hear anything else you have to say. Good Day.
If you took offense to my comment, just please ignore it and move on. I can’t let someone who I didn’t grow up with, tell me what I had and I what I didn’t have access to. Please keep those thoughts to yourself. Thank you.

The 1619 Project is a definitive milestone in American historical writing. It lucid, accurate and fair. If America wants to progress, it has to be understood as one of the many truths of what America was and how it came to be what it as and a tool to help it become a better form of itself.
Great for a few , Rich landowners in the beginning, that expanded to the typical white American after wwii with a large white middle class and now its regressing again with the middle class and poor getting poorer and rich getting richer. @@MatthewBretton-cu2el they would be wrong in that over-simplification. Like most things, the motivations are various and complex in their interconnections. And that America is an idea as much as it is a geographical entity.
I have not read this woman's writings. However, I have studied the antebellum period of American history and specific events leading up to the Civil War. The 2nd Amendment was written by James Madison and Patrick Henry, two large Virginia slave owners, to protect state militia slave patrols. All able bodied white men in the antebellum South served in the state militias to enforce BLACK CHATTEL SLAVE LAWS. The 2nd Amendment isn't about protecting freedom but about keeping black people in chains. Plantation cotton growing was America's biggest cash export commodity in the antebellum period. The whole entire antebellum South was a police state, very similar to a modern fascist or communist police state. American slavery was extremely violent. Those 2nd Amendment state militia slave patrols enforced black chattel slave laws with the mounted militiamen on horseback, the lash, the musket, bloodhounds and hangman's rope.

I will say that “talking” about it isn’t going to make me vote for one party over another. It’s cool you’re mentioning it, but actions speak louder than words…
In today's world Black history is still not taught in the public schools system. Even during Black history month they don't teach anything about Black history. And even if I lost some opportunities due to racism, I never let that stop me from achieving my goals because no obstacle gets in the way of a human with a lot of will. It's that simple. But these people make us minorities feel like the overwhelming force of racism is so powerful that there's nothing we can do about it other than cry racism and change the system. 4:05 "It claims that encouraging people to consider race and systems of oppression is, in itself, a form of racial discrimination". Strictly speaking, it IS racial discrimination, but discrimination is not inherently good or bad. When you're picking out fruit at the supermarket, you're discriminating based on size, color, firmness etc. What makes discrimination good or bad is whether the basis for that discrimination is just. Denying rights to black people just because they're black is clearly unjust; attempting to counterbalance America's infinity-long history of racism through affirmative action is just.
Of course hypocrites think that way. If discrimination wasn't practiced then affirmative action would have been a thing. If you worked for a year and was only paid half of your money and found out you were wronged how would YOU want to be treated?
Considering race and systems of oppression is not a form of discrimination. Discrimination is the process of depriving someone of their rightful opportunities because of their race. That's what has been practiced in this country for centuries. It happened to Asians, Jews, Irish, Italians and Blacks. The white power structure developed the blueprint and some people in our society are now hyper-sensitive, because an intellectual discourse is causing the light to be shined on its historical practice and how it has negatively affected our society as a whole. Taking a long hard honest look at race and systems of discrimination is the beginning of the effort to find a solution. We can't "ignore away" a problem.
@@danewoods7880 You really should have read my entire comment. Discrimination is not, as you said, "the process of depriving someone of their rightful opportunities because of their race", if only because that definition is so narrow that it excludes every other form of objectionable discrimination; what you described is specifically unjust racial discrimination. Discrimination is just the act of distinguishing between things, especially when preference is given to one over another. If, for example, there were absolutely no discrimination in hiring, then the first person who applied for any job would be hired, regardless of their qualifications, background etc. My point was that calling something "discrimination" says nothing about whether it is good. The justness or unjustness of discrimination depends on the context. Black people in America have endured centuries of systemic deprivation, and can not be made full and equal citizens, can not truly be said to receive the same opportunities and privileges afforded to white people, without at least some preference given to them. That is discrimination, it is on the basis of race, and it is just.
To this day, it still astonishes me how some Black americans are so afraid of the fact that historically (and even to this day) white people had horribly racist policies targeted against black people before and after slavery. This idea that now since slavery is gone everything is somewhat better and racism somehow vanished is the biggest ruse being pushed by every collective group involved. Those groups and individuals involved do it to protect their own fragile egos that their history isn't as rose-y as they wish and so all minorities, especially black people, will suffer for it. They just don't realise they're also hurting white people in the process. Make no mistake, every evil person does things for their own benefit, and so to them there is no wrong doing whatsoever in their own eyes. In other words, evil is in fact pure ignorance and nothing more.

Will Trump cancel Holocaust studies as well?
Nope. He only attacks 'certain' groups of people.
It's easier to oppress one group at a time
Given the opportunity, he would. Because he's a massive anti-semite and a huge fan of Hitler. He doesn't so much support Israel, as he really supports Netanyahu, because he really hates Muslims and all people of color.
He hasn't canceled Ivanka and son in law
He should. No point in having 'studies' of a fictional event
America is ashamed of its history. And rightly so.
It should be more ashamed of its present
They weren't ashamed up to the 20th century when they were creating it. And even today this is reflected in the fact that the 13th.amendment still makes chattel slavery legal via it's exception clause that says that slavery is legal for those duly convicted of a crime. So America is still a roaring hypo rite in 2024.

Nicole Hannah-Jones is a hero of mine. I'm a white woman who grew up in the 60-70's Texas. I knew our founding documents didn't reflect me or my Black or Latino fellow travelers.

The state of our race within our community has completely eroded because of statements like the one you just made. The days of when our ancestors love, supported and lifted each other up through all that they went through is truly dead and probably never coming back. Your ugly comment just confirmed that.

@@Rick-og6oyyou shouldn't have tried to explain bcus the original commenter is clearly comparing food to enire ethnic group/s of people.

Whatever politics you subscribe to whatever beliefs you profess whatever race you belong to: to dismiss slavery has got to be one of God's punishable sin. Absolutely no doubt about it.
No one, not even your bigots, dismisses slavery as historical fact. A LOT of people dismiss God, though.
Keep speaking on it. We arent worried about them.
I read the whole book and found it so informational. Born and raised in a conservative Christian home, I began my elementary school years with the same church sponsored schooling that Betsy Vos, former Secretary of Education, also was educated in. Thank goodness, I was transferred into public schools the same year that prayers were removed, not that that had any part in my transfer. But throughout my schooling, I never heard the information Nicole Hannah-Jones was able to gather and pull together! Since reading it, it seems that daily, I am learning new things never addressed in our history books! Many thanks to her and all the contributors!
I hate bullies🤨😠😠😠
Excellent & painful read.
A must have in your library.💞
Exactly, and our ancestors had to live thru this and still today we see this hate no one wants to talk about.
