    One of your best videos! Really easily breaks down an important concept in improvising over chord lines. Works very well and easy to keep in mind. Thanks, Scott! 👍

    You are the best Saxophone teacher I’ve seen on TH-cam. Thank you for your genuine truthfulness. Watching your videos has answered every thing I’ve been trying to fix in my Sax playing for many years. The irony is, about 2 or 3 years ago I deliberately bypassed your thumbnails on two different occasions then decided I might be missing something important due to my misjudgment. I decided I’d better check out your videos. Wow, was I surprised; you’re talented, can really play and willing to teach. Discovering your videos to me is truly a blessing!

    Thanks for reviewing soloing over the bar line. On some tunes, I've struggled with this in the past and would end up getting lost in the changes! Since lockdown I've been studying your videos and woodshedding as much as I can. My sound has improved leaps and bounds. My next goal is to understand more about substitutions, playing outside. Looking forward to more of your videos! Thank you.

    Excellent Scott as usual. Is it possible to make a tuto explaining all the rythms like bossa nova, funk, samba, salsa, ska, etc...using the same lick for a better understanding of the different articulatiuons? Thanks a lot for your teaching.

    Hi Scott. First, I really appreciate your great efforts and clear way of teaching. It’s awesome. For Q.A how can I determine the reason of buzzing my alto sax? Could it be a mechanical problem or my embouchure or blowing is the cause. Because when I go up to High F and F#, it’s very hard to keep sound steady and clear and it turns to high pitch buzz

    Thank you Scott! This is another really great lesson which gets me one little step closer... :) BUT how to link the chords with the scales at the same time? The chords can easily see but scales...? how do I know if I should use Lydian or Phrygian? It seems I have an issue with understanding the scales (when and how to use it) although I've generally known the principles where they come from, different notes, etc.

    Hi Scott, this exercise is really useful for all solos. Question: you selected the Dorian mode, why did you not use the harmonic A minor scale? thus G# would be the common note for the 2 scales instead of F#. It sounds good as well, no?Thanks for all and good luck for the school.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Patrick, because it is an A-7 chord. The minor tells you to flat the 3rd and the 7 tells you to flat the 7th. You can only use the major 7th if it is a A-maj7 chord (A minor w/major 7th). Because the chord has the 7 and not the maj7 you have to use the G natural. The G# would only sound good as a leading tone boing back into the Amaj7 chord, or if you played a bebop scale which includes both 7ths. Hope that helped!

    Hey Scott, great video as always!
    My question for you is: What are you thinking when you are improvising? Do you think notes, chords, scales... or after having practiced, you only play by ear?

    • @Joshua-gv1ep
      @Joshua-gv1ep 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad LBs video something like “how to play melodically” has an exercise that supposedly helps you keep up with chord changes. When you learn how it works you can write the exercise over any songs so it’s really useful.
      Edit: I’ve been practicing it and my voiceleading gets at least a little better every time I work on it.

    Beginner question but at 3:05, you talk about you A-7 chord and you mention how you have a couple of scales to choose from.
    How do you determine which scales were available to use? Is there a way to determine this?
    When I see a A-7 chord, I always imagined it would be the natural A minor scale (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) but in actuality, can you choose any minor scale (natural / melodic minor / harmonic)?

    • @microwavememes
      @microwavememes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any scale with the notes ACEG will work. The key is to make the chord notes hit on beat and use passing notes in between. These passing notes can be non chord tone or even out of key. Scales are a tool to make this happen automatically. Check out Rick Beato's principles of melody for more info
