    Timely video - just got back from my cycle to Holland - just lashed on a cheap 10L dry bag with a bungee cord - actually worked quite well!

    Just had a look at the Alturas in my local shop, looks like the updated version 2 of the Vortex has a completely new velcro type strap with some rubber/foam bumpers on it that should hopefully solve this problem.

    Hi Katie, good review. Just a note (as others have said) re the Altura strap issue. I'm glad you raised it, it's a good point. However I've found a site where you can get 3x 25mm wide X 75mm long straps with ladder lock buckles for £5.80 excl. carriage. I know it's something you shouldn't need to do on a new bag but even if you pay full price for the Altura and a tenner for new straps you're still looking at £30 saving over the Apidura bag. Which will buy you a top tube bag. Good review though and thanks for highlighting a potential issue. 😁

      That's really handy to know, thanks for that. That will definitely help others if they are considering the Altura bag - it's a really nice bag and great quality. Just those damn straps haha. Let us know how you get on with the Altura bag. And the top tube bag :)

    Hi Katie - brilliant review, thank you. You've helped me to make up my mind and buy the Apidura bag. I might even have to treat myself to the saddle pack too... oh, and the accessory pouch!

    Thank you Katie. That was a good review. You chose the Apidura bag, I was of a similar opinion. I have the other bags , saddle and frame, just need a bar bag for my tent, sleep mat and possibly sleeping bag? I’ll just have to see how that goes. £96 you say? Looks like I’m just going to have to bite the bullet. Nothing cheap out there, these days.

    I used the Apidura dry bag on my tour from Melbourne to Adelaide. It was initially a hassle because I have a small bike (so the space between my handle bars isn't as big) and it sometimes made it difficult to use the shifters and brake levers. I got better at fitting it the more I used it and it worked really well in the end. :)

    • @KatieKookaburra

      Yeah you have to really pack it down, my handbags are narrow too. I just put a few bits in the front one and packed the rear bag.

    Hello Katie, thank you so much for the review. You helped me a lot as I was figuring out if I can put my training shoes in the bag for a walk (I use the cleats to cycle) and I will buy the Apidura bag. Thank you so much again 🙂

    Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think you pull the straps at a 90 degree angle to the buckle. Then it should slip tight as poss.

  • @cllris

    Great review, really covered all the stuff I was unsure about. The main concern I've heard from everyone on the Altura is straps. I have loads of double sided velcro which works perfect on my current bags (I'm after something slightly larger) - just a bit shit that you spend that much and have to replace something straight away, but as the only con I think the extra money you are going to save is worth it. Just a note your affiliate link is for a saddle bag not bar bag.

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad it helped. When I was looking there was nothing out there about them grrrrr. I always like to see what I'm getting before I part with the cash. So you went for the Altura one and just changed the straps? That is defo the cheaper option. How have you got on with it? They are both great bags!

    • @cllris
      @cllris 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah thanks. Picked it up for £45. Got a chance to test fit today with my durable velcro straps and it's perfect for my needs and for the cash it can't compare once that bug is fixed! The ones its comes with are god awful though, honestly don't know how it got from product testing to shop floor with them, I'd be super pissed if I hadn't pre-empted it. Will be giving it a proper run next week so see how it holds up in the real world!

    To tighten the difficult straps, tension them while only half through the buckle. Draw up at 90 degrees to buckle. Then, carefully hold the tension on while inserting strap-end back on itself through *other* half of buckle.
    (I don't charge for this stuff, y'know.)

    • @KatieKookaburra

    I had the Apidura bag but sold it. I relaized for the money it was way overpriced for Chinese goods even though the quality was excellent. If I were you just keep the cheapo and get somebody to stitch a better fastening setup on. It's so easy to do.

    i just bought a cheap £15 handlebar strap off Ebay and a dry bag from Amazon to go in it. £30 all in. £100 for a standard bag just seems extortionate. I'd probably splash out on one of those tailfin racks though.

    maybe the traps needs a couple of inches to have something to grab and pull down!

    Nice review. Looks like the buckles and straps were really an issue with that first pack. I've got the Revelate Sweet Roll. Good review did I see tape on your bars to prevent marks from rubbing? I would be interested to know how you protect your bike from damage from the bags moving as I've just bought an Enigma with intentions of doing some bikepacking and would rather not get avoidable marking or worse

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the tape was to hold down the bar tape... is that what you mean. They don't rub or make marks at all from my experience. The straps are soft but fairly tight but had no issues. I guess you could always wrap black electrical tape around them to prevent any scuffs. I like scuffs on bikes, shows they are used :)

    • @danielrowson3379
      @danielrowson3379 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole point of bikepacking is to cut down on the weight of stuff like panniers which allows you to go faster and hit more adventurous trails, taking a trailer would kind of defeat the point.

    • @knordberg
      @knordberg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used both. If you pack your trailer fairly light, you hardly know it's back there and it tracks very nicely. The problem with the trailer is you have so much room, I pack many luxury items which makes it heavier. Not so great for mt. biking trails with hard technical sections. Would be great for road bike trips. (if you can keep it light)

    Hate velcro. Ortlieb might be better

  • @LeoInterHyenaem
    @LeoInterHyenaem 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bikepacking bags are a hassle in use.
    Up until the advent of the bikepacking fad, only the crappiest, cheapest rubbish handlebar bags had straps for attaching to the handlebar; anything even remotely quality would use KlickFIX, Ortlieb or similar attachment system.
    Now, as technical as bikepacking bar bags are, they attach to the bike using the most rudimentary, clunky and primitive "technology" - a couple of webbing straps and plastic buckles (or even Velcro, mostly of the crude, primitive, 1960-ies variety) that will scratch the carbon / aluminium handlebar in no time.
    Also, they're a pain to use - no way of opening and closing them on the go. Removing a bikepacking bar bag from the bike takes over a minute; putting it back on will take another minute. Same goes for most bikepacking frame bags. That's ca. 5 minutes for attaching the entire lot, and another 5 - for detaching everything. Thus, every supermarket visit on a bike tour becomes a chore with these.
    You can't pack these with everything that would fit a pair of panniers and a proper handlebar bag. Things like a DSLR or a pro-level mirrorless camera, a flash, a trigger and lenses; can't use them for proper shopping, etc.
    As a man who likes technical gear and loves carbon bikes and minimalism, I sort of like them on one hand - they surely look cooler than panniers and semi-rigid handlebar bags, do not require racks, etc.. Unfortunately, they aren't good for much (they're fairly impractical and have a very limited use); are rather expensive, require space to store - are a hassle to pack and unpack, attach to the bike and detach from it.

    Altura gear seems a bit pikey, jackets etc aren't all that well made. Buy cheap pay twice as the saying goes. Apidura looks nice. Thinking of alpkit myself, seem to have a good rep. The Apidura stuff looks smart though if you've got deep pockets.

      100%. A 8L dry bag should cost about £8. Even if you treble that for straps, it is still well under what any of the big brands sell for
