I don't understand why the javelin and the AMX weren't popular they are gorgeous cars if I compare them to the Mustang and the Camaro my opinions they are better-looking when they're not moving they look like they're moving they are good-looking cars with an aggressive look if I had a choice which one I like better it would definitely be the AMX Chevelles Mustangs Camaros Etc are all common cars Javelin and AMX aren't
Odd - in the bonus footage of the AMX racing a GTO, the AMX had a quicker time than against the Chevelle, but a lower trap speed. I would think that the quicker time would also give a faster speed at the end. As close as the race was, I doubt that the AMX eased up on the throttle at the end.
I always thought the last great year for the Chevelle was 1970. The last year for the double headlights. The switch to the big single beam light just ruined the look of the car for me. The AMX was always sweet. I was a big Trans-Am fan back then and those Javelin/AMX's that Penski ran were the cats meow.
My 1967 American with a transplanted drivetrain from a totaled 1968 Javelin fooled many mainstream muscle cars back in the very early 1970's. We used to call it the glow factor. Because you felt so warm inside when you smacked a Camaro or Mustang because you knew they were pissed getting beat by a Rambler. 343 with a little headwork. Edelbrock intake with a 650 dual line double pumper. Crane cam, Schiefer clutch, 3.54 gears, Lakewood slapper traction bars because of the horrible wheel hop without them. Had to have the driveshaft shortened because the Javelin had a 109- inch wheelbase whereas the American had a 106 -inch wheelbase. Local machine shop connected to a speedshop did the headwork and the driveshaft for me.
It’s crazy how ridiculous these car prices have gone up. It would be amazing if we could buy the highest performance model of a new muscle car for only $25,000 today.
Dont see why they, or a good truck should run more than that. 50k plus is insane. Nfw could the avg working joe afford one 02 I bought a new loaded LS SIlverado, listed for 21, 23k? 502 dollar pmt. Swore Id never finance another car again

He plans on restoring it one of these days. Stupid pot head! Funny this appeared in my notifications. They really are listening.
A small block AMC goes neck and neck with a big block Chevy. Very impressive. The Chevy was punching down, would like to see how it fares against a 401 Javelin... it would get SMOKED
...it's barely kicking ass against a small block AMC. It wouldn't stand a chance against a 401 AMX Javelin today just like it didn't stand a chance in the 60s and 70s in the Trans Am races
@@NeuKrofta Well i'm not looking to dispute anything!! Or come clashing down on the AMC production,or you but i think honestly Chevy,Ford and Dodge's had AMC's number on the strip i don't know how many times, but that's just stating the truth!! All i was truly saying before is the 72 Chevelle being the slowest years of the Chevelle's,it's still a quick heavy car on the strip, not being against just anything AMC!!
@@CamaroZ-cr9bo they aren't even in the same class. Still says nothing about the Chevies, Fords, or Dodges. I'm saying that it wasn't even a good match up to have a big block vs a small block and doesn't prove anything about the Chevelle except that a big block beat a small block. Absolutely nothing revelatory there. The AMCs had everyone else's number in the Trans Am races and kicked all their asses. This drag race doesn't prove anything.
@@NeuKrofta @NeuKrofta Well you know a comment and a discussion is exactly what you want it to be!! I wasn't looking for you to hate what i said!! But because you do you act like you have something to do about it,like you have somethung to prove!! I don't and i still don't!!...but now that you brought this idea up to me,i'm the one who's right only because you mentioned what's not even imoortant!!...And say what!?...The Chevelle's like 300lbs heavier, probably has an automatic transmission, who knows what rear end!! It still took that race on low compression!!...With all of the disadvantages!! And are you sure a 390's considered a small and not a big!? you moght be right and with certain manufacturers the size ranges differ by big or small!! But yiu're wrong on another thing, small blocks might have smaller heads than big but it'll tell you what big and small isn't everything in performance!!...I hope you figured that out,i did!!....Now let me enter your part of the discussion here to compare the cars, that AMX has every advantage for weight, having a 4 speed etc!!...Having a displacement of a small block as big as 390 considered and that's all it has, plus probably has the high compression ratio of a 1970 car still, more power lighter body and still couldn't win!!...Even a better rear end and couldnt beat it,i really don't care but on your level i'm only being as specific as yourself!!....And as for what a 401 vs that Chevelle!? a 1970 high compression might beat it,but for a 72 401 against that Chevelle, who was better that year!! Now hold on hold on,compare low compression to low compression, high emissions vs high emissions!!...Keep the categories close right!? Big block or small block isn't important all the time even in drag racing,a high compression small block should still beat a low compression big block, haven't you figured that out!? Why's it like i'm the only one who knows anything around here!!....a big blocks have advantages and so do small blocks have a light weight advantage from the go!!...If A 401 low compression engine can or can't hang with that Chevelle it's intersting,i don't follow AMC's but if 401's git reduced compression like the 454 has i think that Chevy might take it!!...But this red one here had alot more advantages than disadvantages this race!!....It's really not important to me but i think you're wrong and i think i could prove it if i wanted to,do the math man,i mean seriously you either act like you don't know much about cars and like you don't know what topics or comments are even worth the fuss about!! Trans Am series!? well i'm not talking about the Trans Am series i was talking about AMC on the drag strips!!....and i may not know if AmC had a 401 available in 72 or if it was most likely a low compression engine like that Chevelle is but i'd bet if it is that chevelle would take it!!....At least the odd's are equal, big block vs big block in your eyes!? You got me curious now about cars i don't follow, but it Javelins were made in 72 i wonder hiw well they do!! In that year especially!! Probably not much better even after your insults thrwn in there!! Alll i see is a debate between a red and blue crayon, one stated he likes how a stock chevy drives, the other thinks i was asking for a dispute like i was looking for one!! And i don't care if it was a Honda Civic that Chevelle ran against,i still said i like how that 72 Chevelle still has good low end with it's heavy body and low compression 270hp big 8!! I do like that car, after i leave i still will!! Do you anything you'd like to say about this!? I wasn't talking about the Trans Am series i was talking about the dragstrip and the car in general!! Not you from the start truthfully!! What are you like 16 or something!?
@@NeuKrofta Well,i just did some research on a 72 401 Javelin,it's in the same league as this Chevelle,i think the Chevelle might win,but might,i really don't care who does but i like the way that Chevelle drives win or lose!!....If it's better it just makes you more wrong for bringing this crap up!!....Like who cares!!
What's sad about the 1972 Chevelle is there's other aspects of it that I like better than the 1970. For one thing, the rounded tail lights and the wheels are more aesthetically pleasing. Just imagine if the 1970 model had those things going for it WITH the added horsepower. So they lost 100 horses but gained looks

I agree the AMX was a killer sleeper. I had a 1970 Hornet, but, not the amx. I really liked it, my wife didn’t, so we went shopping, she picked “The VEGA”. What a loss, just like a Buick we bought in 1979. We had a 1974 AMC Matador in 1974, hot rod, it screamed, after the Vega soured. I wanted the AMC American with the 390, a real hot rod. But not family car, insurance went hi!
Slow start for the AMX against the Chevelle. That was my favorite year for the AMX/Javelin. What was that race car model with the 401? I can't remember.
401 Started in 1971. Bored 390. Interestingly the 1970 390 is a bit of a Unicorn....it's the taller deck block used from 1970 until around 1991 (Grand Wagoneer -360)....but it was the only year for the 390 in that block casting. Previous 390s were shorter deck blocks and did not use the dog leg heads. 1971 401 - 330HP Gross, except for Rebel Machine which was 340HP. The "Race" AMX was the 1969 Hurst SS AMX. There were 52 made by Kar Kraft in Michigan. All 390's...although some of them had 1970 Grilles added. Most (if not all) had the 390 Cross Ram, Dual Quad intake. four-oh-one....say it with me! Can I get a witness?!
It’s hard to beat 454 Cubic Inches especially when it’s been properly “Built”. Both cars are Awesome in their own right. Ahhhh… to go back and relive the ‘70s and’80s
Back in 1972, I was looking at an AMX at a local AMC dealership; my mistake was having the old man along. We took it out for a test drive and got out of the real busy section of the road. Well, old dad, he wanted to see how it did for passing cars. Of course, I didn't want to, as I knew what that puppy had. He insisted, and of course I had to obey (he was going to help me with a down payment). WELL! I did, and he made me turn around and bring it back to the dealer. No sale; he was sure I would get a ticket for speeding or (the horror) street racing. I probably would have. Oh well.

Good call.
Gorgeous AMX!
I don’t remember the 72 idle so rough. Guessing it’s not stock cammed
No way was the 72 stock with an thumpy exhaust note!
270 horse 454, my ass !
My '66 AMC 327 has 270 brake HP.
that chevy big block definitely had way more than 270 for sure
I always thought the last great year for the Chevelle was 1970. The last year for the double headlights. The switch to the big single beam light just ruined the look of the car for me.
The AMX was always sweet. I was a big Trans-Am fan back then and those Javelin/AMX's that Penski ran were the cats meow.
I'd kick the Chevelle to the curb to get the amx any day of the week.
AMC was a great company, way ahead of the times.
These cars had mods they are not stock from factory. I would like to know the details on each car.
They're both really nice
It’s crazy how ridiculous these car prices have gone up. It would be amazing if we could buy the highest performance model of a new muscle car for only $25,000 today.
Dont see why they, or a good truck should run more than that. 50k plus is insane. Nfw could the avg working joe afford one
02 I bought a new loaded LS SIlverado, listed for 21, 23k? 502 dollar pmt. Swore Id never finance another car again
I’m digging both cars. But if I to choose one and drive away with it, it would be the Chevelle.
The Chevelle driver nailed it out the gate.
and the AMX still kept up
Yep, seen that coming 💪
At my brother in laws house for the forth yesterday. He has a 70 AMX that same color and hood scoop. It is a 360 four speed he has had since 1978. It has been stored the whole time. He plans on restoring it one of these days. Stupid pot head!
Funny this appeared in my notifications. They really are listening.
In 72 they held back the horsepower The AMX is my favorite I still love the.chevelle
IMO that Chevelle is not stock! Stock cam and 8:5/1 compression is not going to have a lope like that.
A small block AMC goes neck and neck with a big block Chevy. Very impressive. The Chevy was punching down, would like to see how it fares against a 401 Javelin... it would get SMOKED
Even with high emissions the 72 Chevelle can still kick ass bone stock!!
...it's barely kicking ass against a small block AMC.
Evidently you're looking for a clash of opinions all because i said a bone stock 72 SS is still a dam good running heavy car off of the line, and it is and was!!
LOve the grill of the 71-2 so much better. Had a couple 70s
@@gordocarbo That, too
That's a nice Chevelle but that AMX😍
I believe the driver lost that race... the AMX left the tree later... I would have liked to have seen the reaction times...
It cracks me up when people think stock cars were fast. You could make them fast, especially with modern technology, but they were not fast...
They were mostly all 14 sec cars
Put a better tire tune up headers like the mfrs knew they would things changed.
89 Id get aked why my 69 SS 350 Camaro was so tame....well it was bone stock
Miss the days of picking up a clean driver for 3-4k for a daily though.
Love my GMs...but I'd take the AMX over those two GMs any day! Have to say though, the designer behind that AMX dash should have been taken out back of the shed!
Dig both those cars, was secretly hoping for the under dog but tough to overcome that 454 low end
I don’t think that Chevelle had the stock cam.
😎 R.I.P. AMC YOU
ARE MISSED 🏁
the 390 also fits into a hornet, gremlin, etc....
Both are beautiful cars, I have a 73 Javelin now.
Keep it!! You never see those anymore. Late 80s I was 18? BOught a 71 SST white bucket interior baby chit orange...loved that car
pure burnout machine. Nobody else at cruise night had one wish I hadnt sold it but had to ge tmy Camaro back on the road
Min wage back then was crap
I agree the AMX was a killer sleeper. I had a 1970 Hornet, but, not the amx. I really liked it, my wife didn’t, so we went shopping, she picked “The VEGA”. What a loss, just like a Buick we bought in 1979. We had a 1974 AMC Matador in 1974, hot rod, it screamed, after the Vega soured. I wanted the AMC American with the 390, a real hot rod. But not family car, insurance went hi!
No way that Chevelle was stock. Just based on the HP and weight of the Chevelle from that year compared to the AMX the AMX would have dusted it
Rules allow for certain internal mods...not many but-
390 FP of torque at 3,200 RPM would make a great truck engine.
Love me some AMX
Slow start for the AMX against the Chevelle. That was my favorite year for the AMX/Javelin. What was that race car model with the 401? I can't remember.
AMX - HURST
I believe the 401 was just basically a Little bigger 390, didn't it come in the early 70,s Javelin. To replace the 390, but with Lower Compression.
@@davesnothereman7250 ohhh aaaaa-men brotha!
Early '71 401 with high compression - yep 330 hp. AMX's fitted with that motor and tall gearing were good for close to 150 mph.
I kinda wanted to pull for the AMC but I'm a Chevy man, lol!
It’s hard to beat 454 Cubic Inches especially when it’s been properly “Built”. Both cars are Awesome in their own right. Ahhhh… to go back and relive the ‘70s and’80s
AMen!! Love both cars....Chevelle is so classy in that color...but having had a 401 Jav Id take either one
over 6 weeks and people are still complaining about commentary.
I liked the commentary!
Oh well.
Mid 80s I found a perfect dark green 68 Firebird 326 for $800!! Uncle saw it tried to sell my dad on it 2 bbl not a race car etc he forbid me to own a car til I moved out So I did...lol
FOR 1970 AMC HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD AND MADE IT DISAPPEAR !!!! I WAS ONLY 7 , ITS AMAZING I CAN REMEMBER THOSE DAYS INCLUDING THE GIRLS WITH THE DEPIDY DEW , HOT PANTS OMG I WAS IN HEAVEN AT THE PARTIES WITH SPIRIT IN THE SKY , JOY TO THE WORLD , SMILE A LITTLE SMILE FOR ME ROSEMARIE , HEY THERE LONELY GIRL , WHATS GOIN ‘ ON , SHOW AND TELL .....
If I was that Chevelle guy I would not be cluking to much because that AMX was much more impressive. I was pulling for that AMX the whole way down.
Question have the chevelle
the LS5 454 ? With the 365 hp ?
I miss my first car - 1972 Chevelle Malibu
Im surprised that it didn't walk away from the GTO, being considerably lighter and one more cu. Inch in displacement.
I’m wondering if the rules allow for “line locks” for the 4 speed cars? It would certainly help drivers with burn outs and coming out of the gate.
nope
He used to have a list of the rules ,or a link (I can't remember)
in his description
You don't need a line lock with a stick, just be quick with your left foot.
@@livewire2759 Same with rev limiters, 2 steps etc. Just use your ears and brain

Love these factory muscle car drags. Always Interesting to see who wins. Sometimes contrary to what I remembered. For instance, the AMX beating the GTO. Wait, what?
Miss the lively commentary though. Used to crack me up
What happened to the narrator
AMX driver screwed the pooch on his start. Looked to me like he was about to overtake the Chevy give a few yards more.
