Had you just used a reciever hitch extension you could still pull a camper, bike, jetski or snowmobile trailer.
This way you can still make a run to town for groceries and gas without storing your gas in your vehicle.
I made a beefy motorcycle carrier with 3 reciever hitches (one off each of the trucks frame rails and the center trailer hitch.) and mounted tail lights to the carrier, so that when my 1200cc ADV motorcycle is on the back of my shortbed 3/4 ton truck I can stil pull my camper trailer, and the Popo doesn't hassle me about covering up my tail lights. Gives me peace of mind too. Even made an extended trailer light 7 pin RV harness for the trailer should I want to pull one. I pull a teardrop style camper, this way the wifey has a good bed,(and me too) and I have my big bike for exploring. My Diesel Truck doesn't even notice the weight!

You could cap the others square pipes, not only the one who connect to the trailer hitch. Excellent idea, well done.

Not a welder but I enjoy watching your ambitious craftsmanship. You should use your cnc to cut out custom patterns or designs to insert for a bottom or sides.

Nice project. The sliding support bracket to hold the cans was a suitable hold down method. I suggest that you should have duplicated this so that the mass could be balanced over the hitch point as more load was introduced to the storage rack. In affect, center loading the cans.

Nice project, I'd be leary of having a 25gallon rear bumper next to the exhaust pipe but I understand pickup truck beds get crammed with stuff and a can could get punctured. I'd put a strip of 3M reflective tape across the bottom to make it more visible.

I have been using your non-mitered angle iron 90 degree corner joints, also. I believe that the 3 (sort of "Z" shaped) lines of welds provide a more stable and secure welded joint than does the typical dual 45 degree cuts with its 2 lines of weld ... and avoid any problems of having slightly imperfect 45 degree cuts not aligning to a perfect 90 degree corner.

Amazed at the unintelligent people that believe you drive down the highway with gas cans on the back of your vehicles. We only use this rack system when we are at the track for refilling between races, that's why it is removable , do the thinking people, what kind of a idiot would drive with gas strapped to the back of their vehicles. Nice build sir!

  • @joepepper3991
    @joepepper3991 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Very useful. Let me just mention to check your exhaust location before mounting anything plastic behind the vehicle, especially gas cans. I made the mistake and melted a hole in the plastic storage bins directly behind the exhaust in the rack. I apologize if he mentioned this in the video but my audio is not working so I can’t tell if he did.

Only have two thoughts on this project
1st.. when all 5 containers are in the rack it covers the license plate... CHP would have me pulled over so quick. ......
2nd is security ... I don't see how they are locked down... Anyone can just pull them off .... Or hit a bump and an empty will get gosseled out.
If you came up with a work around please let us know. ..
    Thanks for the great videos

Need a retention method, preferably one that doubles as a security method. I'm thinking a bar that goes through the handles that can be locked. Have to be certain the containers can not be ejected, especially when you can't see them. Have to lock them down because they will walk off. I have had them stolen while I was at the gas station. All a thief needs is opportunity and a small window at that.

Thanks for watching Jeffrey, The intended use for this rack for the guy i built it for is in a private gated community, So he can just put the cans in the rack and run down to the gas station in the community to get gas for his off road vehicles . Less than a 1/4 mile. And as far as the numbers on the truck! sorry i can't think of everything. Jimbos garage!

I HATE THIS!!! Why? Because it’s PERFECT AND I WANT ONE. Nobody of course makes such a simple thing...nobody nowhere! Want to sell me one?

That'd work great for when you get rear ended, instant explosion those things should be illegal, very dangerous, and where's the licence plate ? Dumb idea.

Mr Hunt you only use these at the track not while your driving down the road. You need to get off your ass and come down to the track sometime maybe you could see the real world and not be a couch potato all your life. Dumbass
