@gary bartlett yes they are. I’ve seen it from foot in a undercut to the tip of a kayak to a swimmer getting hung up. I also had a bad experience as well with one on the Goodwin Dam run. Always make sure to have a great crew and that everyone is certified in cpr and anything else. Classes are cheap and usually a full day to three day courses to get certified.
Your probably not too far downstream! People can be resuscitated from cold water drownings. Time is of the essence but the cold increases your odds of success. It shocks me in watching so many similar videos of people more intent on filming than helping. I have been paddling 40 years and I am always on the lookout for people in trouble and never hesitate to help. Former paramedic and ED nurse of 35 years. The one rule I have is to never become a victim myself in a rescue no matter where I am.
i was at least 5 minutes (running) away and there is no real way to get someone out of that rock plus in the 5 mins i would have zero sight of the feature unless i looked at the drone the whole way in which case would of taken alot longer so if i ditched the drone i would have no idea if he was still under the rock and if he was still under there is nothing i could of really done so i made a call to keep eyes on him incase he flushed then i could stay in contact with the second boater
They dropped in pretty much at the same time but he just went first and it’s fairly hard to keep track of where each other are as it’s pretty big and continuous
I would never sell my gear even if I had bad experiences I teaches you to remember the good out weighs the bad its more than a hobby to some its a life long quest to the end kayaking has gave me so so much and I owe my endless effort or my life if needs to be

Hahaha I took center line on the lap before this one and it’s pretty sketchy aswell there is a rock dead centred that’s like a giant mouth that it pushes into kinda hard to see in the video
The Alpacka Valkrie might be a good contender for this run. These packrafts dont submerse themselves into holes to move left or right with the hydraulic flows in the backwash, thus allowing the paddler to stay on their desired line. The kayaker here just won the lottery for not drowning.
Always looking for the red flags.. this is probably one of the worst boating hazards out on the rivers. I would have a guy just down river of the rock with a rope that way as soon as his boat started getting sucked under you could pull him out downstream! Just have to have perfect timing! That's for sure
That’s the dream but in reality that would just never happen cause it happens just to quick remember it’s only playing at 40% speed when he goes under! Also there is a chance that the person isn’t going to go under and now you have created a hazard by throwing a rope over them. The undercut down stream on the right is almost more of a hazard
@@DrMatthewHudson there is also a under cut lower on the right and some nasty features on the left and a log jam! A team of 10 safety crew would be the dream but not likely
Wow, that's one lucky guy. Thanks for posting so others can learn from it.
Them undercuts are no joke! Good call letting the yak go.

That was f**** scary. But definitely should have been higher up if that red boat was the safety cover.

I would just sell all my kayak gear if this happened to me. I'd be done.

Bro a pack raft would have just been surfed in the hole above the undercut and the beater would have had to swim out anyways.

@@dansutherland8623 true.. fuckin scarry.. it's one of the worst hazards on the river, never really a good way to be in position
This is why you always have safety and ropes kids
What do you want to do with a rooe in that situation?! Nobody was there
What kind of safety woulda helped here senior?
There is a giant undercut rock on river right. Anywhere near there would better than nowhere.
