  • Pros and Cons of Living in Avon Indiana. There are many pros and cons of living in Indianapolis and Avon, Indiana is no different. Avon, Indiana has been voted as one of the top places to live in the entire U.S. multiple times but is somehow overshadowed some by other suburbs around Indianapolis. Avon, Indiana is one of the first places, if not the first place I visited in the Indianapolis area many years ago. I still have memories of those visits. Avon, Indiana isn't a large town but was certainly smaller in the early 90's but it seemed so large to me. Many of the pros for Avon have to do with its smaller size and just how friendly it is for most people... especially families. However, at first glance, you might think Avon, Indiana is one of the busiest places around Indianapolis. The reason you might think this is because Rockville Road or U.S. 36 runs right through the heart of Avon, Indiana. But, you don't have to travel far off that road to find a very peaceful and relatively inexepensive suburb of Indianapolis.
In this video I talk about the pros and cons of living in Avon Indiana.

I think the best part of Living in Avon is that you basically get all of the essentials on one road

Have lived in Avon since 2004, in the neighborhood that you showed in the video (the one west of WTP; although, it was kinda weird seeing my house...). Anyway, I think you nailed it with these pros/cons. I would even rank them just as you did. Lacking personality is something my wife and I discuss regularly; it seems that our key feature is US36, and that really isn't something to be proud of. But yeah, I love the accessibility to everything we need, plus we can go west and be in the country within a matter of minutes (as a cyclist, that's important for me.) Hopefully the widening of US36 and 100 South will help alleviate the traffic in the next few years. Great vid!

Thanks! Good to hear the pros and cons are accurate from an Avon resident. I agree about the short drive to the country. I used to be a cyclist and it's hard to explain to someone exactly how important that is.

I ran across this. This has been a long time ago. Avon has gotten rough hate living here. It's not like it used to be been living here 27 years getting ready to get the hell out.

Are there any suburbs close to Indianapolis that have houses with a few acres of land for those who want to own small livestock such as goats and sheep? Preferably in the northern half of Indiana if it was split horizontally through Indianapolis.

    • @LivingInIndianapolis
      @LivingInIndianapolis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

For something like that you'd have to be a good distance outside of Indy or any of the surrounding cities for the most part. Anything near would be a rare find a fairly expensive. Way north in Hamilton county or north of that is possible. Plus, on the edges of the surrounding counties around Indy.

I like the thrill, a kid spread a rumor in Avon intermediate east, the rumor was that he was masterbating during testing. I told the kid who was the victim of the rumor about it, next day class was gathered up and had a talk about it.

The problem with Avon is that it didn't officially become a town until the late 90's. This is the reason why there isn't really anything that makes Avon unique or have a personality. Even though they are trying to add lanes to US 36, the continued development of housing will not make the road less congested and will put more traffic on the side roads. You also have to take into account the CSX railyard that is parallel to US 36. The repeated noises of the yard can get annoying at times.

  • @marciacottongim7134

To go from one side of Avon to the other you would not go on US 36, you would cross it.

Voted number 1 place to live in Hendricks County, Highest median home income in Hendricks County, Top notch schools and athletics. Yeah we don't have a town center or square but I don't know if we need one. Brownsburg redesigned their downtown and are struggling to find businesses and residents to move into their store fronts and apartments. Avon is pushing trails, parks and infrastructure. Avon in the next few years is gonna be bringing in higher end jobs and higher end housing. Towns standards are being jacked up super high here...wait and see. Costco is coming here... Cooper's Hawk and several private owned restraunts are here and coming to Avon.

    • @Itravelbackintime

Voted number 1 is only a subjective opinionated poll. It's the actual people voting with migrating with their feet that count. In terms of being number 1, Plainfield is not only the largest in Hendricks County but has doubled Avon in population growth and will be ahead in 2030 being first to hit between 50,000 and 55,000 (still doubled) while Avon will be 31k based on the growth rates for the last decade to be projected. Avon only has 18.72 sq miles of land which is smaller than Plainfield's 25.92 sq miles of land for develpment. Plainfield also has plans to have a 3rd I-70 interchange exit leading to another another 4 lane corridor of more retail and residential area development further expanding the town to maybe becoming the first city in Hendricks County. Avon does not have direct access to an interstate. To give Brownsburg benefit of the doubt, it's new downtown will eventually have more occupancy of more businesses over time. It has taken decades since the last century for Plainfield to have a more establied occupied dowtown. Avon on the other hand has "no" downtown. Stripmalls aren't enough (Plainfield and Brownsburg has more to offer than just strip malls). The fact that US36 has a lot of traffic is actully due to poor planning due to not have enough 4 lane corridors to off load some of that traffic. Ronald Reagan Parkway and US 36 isn't enough for a town of only 19k. Plainfield has x4 four lane corridors to handle more traffic over flow (especially after building Metropolis Mall and more warehouses). Had Plainfield only had Ronald Reagon and US 40 to rely on (taking away four lanes like Stratford, Perry Road and US 267)...doing the math US 40 would be way more congested. Plainfield not only has strip malls but more traffic from a mall, warehouse traffic and loads of hotels which Avon falls behind in development. It really comes down to planning.

@@Itravelbackintime You don't have to have a downtown to be successful and for businesses that continually have been coming to Avon the past few years than anywhere else in the county that says alot about why they pick Avon. There is a bunch of stuff in the works that Avon is doing that I have personally heard about and talked with town officials about that is gonna be huge for Avon and what it brings to the county as a whole. Some stuff that is complete game changers for Avons future. And as for population Avon is trying to unite Washington Township and Avon as a whole which expand town boundaries so that people that are considered county finally will be able to be officially "Avon". And Brownsburg, Plainfield, Danville etc etc have all been towns and established for many many years while Avon became a town in 1995...and for Avon being so young it has completely turned from cornfields and nothing to an amazing place to live and play....again Money magazine saw something in Avon if it had it at #17 best places a few years ago when nobody else in the county was even on the list. Overall Hendricks County is great but Avon is no slouch by any means. Are there things Avon could use absolutely...stuff it can work on absolutely...but Plainfield and Brownsburg have done some things that Avon has seen isn't very successful moving forward and avoids possible mistakes long term. It all depends on what the citizens and town folks want but Avon is trying to worry about Avon not what Plainfield or Brownsburg does.

@@BajaThisBlast If stripmalls and drive thrus is enough then yes a downtown doesn't matter based on just that criteria. Than anywhere else in the country? I've lived all over the country...you need to get out more. Go drive down US 280 in Birmingham or through Buckhead on GA400 in Atlanta. (no comparison to traffic or development). There's parts of Northern NJ cities that have 50k people per square mile with higher density of development. It's the migration of people moving to these areas who will deternine which town will have more people to say it so. Keep in mind Plainfield nearly 40,000 in population doubles Avon's 19k. (even if Avon grew at 100 percent which is highly unlikely when it's only 60 Plainfield would still be another 20 thousand ahead give or take even by 2030). Unlike Avon Plainfield is more pedestrian friendly with a vast larger network of sidewalks spanning several more miles per capita which also lines both sides of US 40 while Avon lacks this along US36. Also Plainfield is the only town on the westside of Indy to have a major mall other than stripmalls or only major mall on the weside of Indy. Plainfield will also be geting a 3rd I-70 exit which will include another major multilane corridor lined with more residential and retail development far exceeding any area of Hendricks County. Also has no direct access to an interstate like Plainfield and Brownsburg. I say this because Plainfield has the largest concentraiton of warehouses jobs than any part of the metro. Avon does not have the large number of warehouses that Plainfield has to produce those kind of job numbers. Also Apple will be building a large major production facility just west of Plainfield which will spurs more jobs and population growth to the area. Saratoga Parkway will become another major corridor extension to I-70 to create the 3rd exit to help eliviate more traffic to this area. At the end of the day people are going to move where the jobs are. Plaifield has a lot more than just retail development.
Hendricks largest based on latest 2021 census estimates: (where most people have located to)
      1. Plainfield.......37,173 - 25.92 sq mi land
      2. Brownsburg ..28,219 - 16.35 sq mi land
      3. Avon..............19,962 - 18.87 sq mi land

@@Itravelbackintime When Avon incorporates Washington township and others in Avon but are considered county it will most likely surpass almost 25 to 30k in population. And as for sidewalks and accessibility yes Avon lacks that but is adding that and pushing parks, trails, greenways, rec areas etc etc while Plainfield doesn't seem to be doing that much of. And for warehouses the only benefit I see there is that the property taxes are lower for citizens in Plainfield...most people in Plainfield hate that half the town is loaded with warehouses left and right....Avon doesn't want all that and I don't blame them. And as for being accessible to the interestate has positive and negative effects just depends on people's personal preference. And as for malls they're gonna be an eye sore in the future... everything is going towards online shopping and malls are going out left and right around the country. Even the mall in Greenwood has problems and parts of it look awful due to the fact stores there have gone under. Avon hasn't wanted to go the route of malls because alot of communities don't see the success long term for them with the increase and demand for online shopping. And I've been all over the country and see what other communities do but see positives and negatives not just in other places but even Avon...there is no perfect situation but striving to be better for the future is the main goal. Avon is literally super young in being a town compared to Plainfield and Brownsburg but are trying to make changes and improvements with the growth that has come in recent years. Town officials know the issues and problems and are trying to address them but change doesn't happen overnight. Every town in Hendricks County has their positives and negatives but you have to take or understand what works best for you for where you live. Are you a Plainfield resident or something just curious?
