every member of this band is a MASTER of their craft. these guys deserve so much more recognition for the amazing stuff they're putting out.
You fucking rock Nikko. This bassline is absolutely insane with its complexity. I just discovered UTA a few weeks ago and was hugely disappointed that my new favourite bassist wasn't even in the band anymore! :'(
The unique technique,
the intelligence of the effects placement to follow the feel of the song,
the chords while playing,
the original and poetic way of his bass singing melodies,
and that final jam!!!
You are the best at what you do,
because in it, there's so much you!
Thank you, Nikko Whitworth!
Wow. This is truly the ultimate compliment. Thank you so much my friend!
If there's one thing I wish power metal did more, it's turn up the bass. This is awesome, and I hate that it's hard to hear in the album's mix.
Much like Tomas Haake has inspired others to give up playing drums, you've inspired me to give up playing bass haha
You're an absolute beast, such a unique technique
OMG, that was awesome. Love UTA but you are definitely missed, Nikko.
Damn, you're getting some good tones out of that bass.
Thanks man! The Kiesel has such a wide range of tones it blows my mind constantly...
Cool stuff again, these verses are so exciting. :) Congrats, can't wait to hear all the Apex album. :D
Hope you're enjoying it!!
Just recently got into this band and as a bass player was upset he is no longer in UTA. Such a great player...
I feel the same way..
WOW. Never knew I needed a bass playthrough of this. \m/
Superb playing!
I can't even begin to get my head around this technique!
I am speechless!
Instant subscribe - was brought here by seeing your comments in the playthrough of Awakening. I've been telling my wife how impressed I was with Unleashes new bassist, then BAM, here I am #NoRegrets
Cool man.
I had the exact same amp prior to my current amp. Excellent amp.
Like the thumb technique too.
Thanks bro!
Over the years, I have watched this over and over again. And I want to unlike just so I can re-like it again every time. The song + tone + technique….🔥🔥
I've always thought that the ''picking style'' of your playing is so weird. But I absolutely love it! Kinda wanna learn it now!
It's like he's playing the banjo, it's wild.
@@CantankerousDave It's called pizzicato technique and it comes from classical mostly Cello players- while similar to banjo clawhammer there are some key differences.
666th like 🤘I've always loved the basslines on Apex but didn't realize you had your own channel until recently! Nice to hear them in the forefront!
Excellent -- driving -- moving -- superb bass Man! So glad I came across this.
Love your work on Awakening too!!
i had never seen something similar to the technique you are using! so dope.
It's called pizzicato and it is used mostly by Cello players in classical music.
just amazing!
Good stuff, Nikko. How about a video on the four-finger technique? It looks Garrison-ish, but I'd love to see your thoughts on it, and the sort of stuff you practiced to get it together.
I don't know, I feel pretty good about my bass skills...
*watches this video*
*looks down on the pick in my right hand*
*looks back at video*
*looks back at pick*
Well... dangit. :P
No. It is good to play with a pick. this is heavy metal, not jazz or something strange like that.
2020, covid sux and I still miss nikko 😭
holy shit, that technique with the thumb is really interesting. is that just to make chording easier, an alternative to the three-finger technique, or what? thats really cool!
Such a sick song! I’m still at a very beginner stage of playing bass but maybe after a few years I’ll be ready to try and learn some UTA songs.
Great bass here, agree with other posters, I woulda loved to hear this more in the album mix. I hope you find your way back to a band, maybe one that lets you go a bit crazy and kick up that bass. I know you're off experimenting, yet would really love to hear you back in metal someday.
When you think this is a cover but it's literally the bassist of the band. I feel so dumb! Nice work though! One of my first song out of all of UtAs songs.
Fantastic playing bro. Im late to the party in appreciation but better late than never.
Would love to know if you were taught to play like that or teach yourself. Totally unique bud. If i had to guess, id say you played banjo as a kid and incorporated the hammer claw into the bass. Fun to watch.
So cool. Super excited for Apex!
Hope you're enjoying it!!
Awakening please.. 🙏🙏
Can´t wait to see you and the others at Geiselwind in two months ;-D
But first i must study the new Album... Yeah!
Great record, i nearly can´t stop playing it!
Greetings from Germany :-)
Awesome
Nikko! This is so sick! I'll translate what "Vader Fox" wrote. It says "I love your band, greetings from Uruguay"
Haha man, you're beyond international now
Amazing!! greetings from Argentina!
I've only met one other person that has a right hand technique like Nikko's.
Spoke to you ever so briefly in Manchester, UK and wanted to re-iterate that your four-finger bass technique is inspirational. Truly next-level playing - adding complex melody as well as the gravitas Unleash deserves.
Hi Nikko! I recently discovered UTA, and I'm blown away by your work with them. Seeing that you're also cut from similar jazz cloth as myself is even better. Definitely have a fan here.
I have to ask, when you use the line selector (i.e. 1:25), is anything else in the signal path with the Drive Maker? That tone, in particular, is wicked sick.
LOVE IT!!!
yeah that Thumb technique tho, Ive only seen Victor Wooten do it that way...Awesome
*Why do I get the feeling that Nikko bout to be announced as the new NW bassist* insert a Mr. ROCK & ROLL obnoxious scream here ___ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!__ ps *God Bless Talented Musicians* 🙏🙌👏👏🙌
Super tight playing with fantastic tone and dynamics. Not to mention, the composition is very creative and unexpected. The chord voicings and note choices are prime!
I can't tell, are you playing thumb, index, middle, ring or are you playing ring, middle, index, thumb?
I find it much more difficult to play the first. Either way, your attack is ridiculously even. It's way harder than people think.
The bass player that most impressed me
Badass performance. What tuning are you using here? It looks like the lower two strings are D and G but then I notice you hit a D note on what looks like the fifth fret of the highest string (around 1:40) which would imply that string is actually tuned UP a whole step.
D-G-D-A
Truly great video and song. thanks Have a skilful time. Pinge
Really upset I didn't know you had a TH-cam page until now...Anyway, killer as always. I didn't realize this song was so intricate until now. Did you play it on the record that way or did you play around a bit for this upload?
Nikko can you please play like this the "awakening"?
Hey Nikko, your work is beautiful. Any chance of making another two of the same album? They are Shadow Guide and Earth and Ashes. Thank you for your work on music!
Yeah I'd love to hear earth and ashes myself
This would be cool as hell to learn! Wish I knew how to transcribe...
Good god I need to know the turning. This is intense.
DGDA
3:32 - 3:38 Nice!
The Billy Sheehan of metal.
Nikko you need to do the other songs too.
Please come back with uta...
Come back soon to the group (UtA) Nikko!!!!!
Victor Lloret pweaaaase
I am super interested to see you play a 6 string with that technique. Do you own any 6 strings?
Next : Awakening, Shadow Guide, The Matriarch and The Coward's Way
See you in Quebec City, can't wait!
Sadly you won't be seeing this guy. He left the band to pursue other musical directions. They just announced a bassist for their N. American tour who I believe also plays guitar in the technical death metal band First Fragment.
Sent an email for tabs per the video description but didn't get a response. Sadness.
Hey man what about the vader's specs? Great tone by the way!
metal Di Piazza!!
Nice tone! Did you make the ramp yourself or is it available from Kiesel?
im getting one of these soon, are those the humbuckers or single coils because those sound tight af
These are the humbuckers! They are super great but I am also interested in getting a Vader with the singles just cause it's probably an entirely different universe.
This play-through is woefully under-viewed
and i should just throw my bass in the trash now hahah. well done.
why would you do such a thing??
Nikko Whitworth hahahah because I'll never be that skilled. I can play an upright but your right hand technique is awesome. I got the double lp. It's a masterpiece. I want to know what happens next in the story.
yo why u playing the bass like a classical guitar
arg the likes are on 666 don't want to ruin that!
Why tf would you ever leave this band? How unfortunate.
Real bass players play with a pick.
Hey y'all just want to remind everyone that Nikko Whitworth uses they/them pronouns. I know there's people out there that don't care but for those that wish to respect Nikko's identity, now you know.
