  • In 1787, the HMS Bounty set out on a journey that took it through perilous seas to a tropical paradise…and into history as one of the most ill-fated vessels ever to sail for King and country. Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front) directed this color-drenched spectacular nominated for seven Academy AwardsÒ* including Best Picture. Filmed before in 1935 and again in 1984’s The Bounty, the gripping tale, based on a true story, centers on two men. Marlon Brando puts his own stamp on the role of first officer Fletcher Christian, the tormented first mate transformed into a man of action. Trevor Howard is Capt. William Bligh, uncompromising in his command and his cruelty. “Fear is [my] best weapon,” Bligh proclaims. But it’s also the most costly, driving men to desperation…and to mutiny. Richard Harris, Hugh Griffith and Richard Haydn also star in this epic adventure.

Saw this great film on the big screen in 1962 and was struck by its beauty, the locals, the music, the performances and acting by Brando and Howard. An absolute favourite of mine.

This was in the good 'ol days when there were still Intermissions. This was a gorgeous movie in every way which I appreciate more now. It was fun picking out all the familiar actors like Richard Harris. Marlon Brando was outstanding as Mr. Christian. We will never know how he really died, but their ship did burn down and is still under the water by the island.

I’m pleasantly surprised Trump mentioned this movie-- stumbled upon this on Turner classic movies five years ago --was enthralled with this epic. Totally check it out!

I think Frank Lloyd 's version and Lewis Milestone ' s version are both equally outstanding, convincing and compelling. I thought Brando's performance had more depth then Gable's performance! Laughton ' s performance, however, had more of a menacing streak then Howard's performance.

Yes, the movie starts well, and sails along to Tahiti quite well, but the ending is a train wreck at sea. The 1935 version, and the 1984 version, are far more satisfactory with the real historical narrative facts.
I love this movie, I saw it in 1962 in wide screen 70mm and 6-channel Stereo, and I love the excellent soundtrack score by Bronislau Kaper (his finest ever) and cinematography.
RIP HMS Bounty, sank off Cape Hatteras during Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012 due to remarkably inept decisions to put her to sea in a hurricane. What were they smoking?

Well I was most captivated by this film watching it at the age of around twenty years of age (born in 77'). Being a history buff, I agree on what you wrote. Yet a one actually has to watch all versions of this most extraordianry event in history to get a more fair view on what really happend (moreover to read books on the matter) as every film on this muteny in 1787 catches some aspect wich is not taken into consideration in the remaining films. Greetings from Stockholm, Kingdom of Sweden!

1:09 I've been on the island of Pitcairn, where Christian and the mutineers eventually settled. Actually this movie was not filmed in that location (nor were any of the other film adaptations of the mutiny). Pitcairn is too small to accommodate a big film crew and WAY too far away to warrant a film production.

A shame Brando's Christian was such a fruity fop in the film's first half. Howard's Bligh surpassed Laughton's. And I think Bronislau Kaper's score here was his masterpiece!

terrance bigham ~ I disagree, sir... Brando's portrayal of Norman-French/English nobleman Fletcher Christian was impeccable... You'd have the be Norman-French to understand how true that is.
