A wonderful colorist with great compositional akills. First saw his work in the mid 70s at the Jamaica Art Center on Jamaica Ave. in Queens. Loved the work then and love it now. As soon as I post this I'm going to watch it again. Thanks James
What a great video James Kalm. Delightful discoveries about Romare Bearden's work. I can't wait to run over there to DC Moore. To see that color and vitality. Thank you. Love the music you always start with, and your down to earth painter's voice.
man those black and white pieces just pop amongst the color. its surprising how much of an effect he has had on pop culture with his children books, public art installations, stage but still remains small in the canon of modernism. i remember ronald reagan presenting him with some arts award?
Thanks for sharing one of my favorites...As a Caribbean-American his narratives really resonate with me. I'm sure he's one of the reasons I collage as much as I do. Great compositions and color choice is what I enjoy. His work is timeless to me.
Consistently vibrant, lively, playful with great intuitive color insight and design sensitivity, leaves Matisse in the dust. Excellent that you share this artist with us.
Great job James Kalm, The main thing I could not get out of my head is the huge contrast between how visceral he could make his images but then to come back with absolutely top of the line colors and pigments. I noticed on some paintings he would use cobalt, next to Manganese blue with patches of Phthalo Turquoise. All the reds and yellows look like Cadmium colors that just take the visceral image to greatness and cross over from primitive to something very special and pleasing.
Great show, love his work :) J. Lawrence & Romare could have a show together and it would work very well together, I think. Whoever made the framing choices for this show was terrible at it, about 97% of the frames directly conflicted & clashed with Romare's style of artwork (in my opinion). The one old wood frame painted black was the best frame selection and some on the minimal ones, but the department store chromes and aluminum ones were awful, awful choices.
One of my favorite artists of all time. Bold not afraid of color. Great composition.
Brilliant work and inspiring. Thanks James and THANK YOU KATE
Thank you, very gifted and bright color.Nice detail..very together, so much he presents...PEACE.
