- Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
Today we are following some more of the Fife Coastal Path - the long distance walking route that covers all of the coastline of the Kingdom of Fife, where we live.
Starting in sleepy Cellardyke, we walk along the coast to Crail - one of the best preserved historic fishing villages in Scotland. On the way we find beautiful wild-flowers, dramatic sea-worn caves, brightly coloured butterflies and some atmospheric ruined houses.
I couldn't resist the beautiful fritillary butterfly that I found on this walk, with black markings just like leopard print on a vibrant orange background. Watch as I paint this butterfly, from start to finish, at the end of the video.
If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible Scottish scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...

Another masterpiece & the scenery magnificent. Even tired Jack out. Ooh and belated birthday wishes🤩
Thank you Richard! Yup, we managed the impossible and tired out the spaniel…not for very long though haha!
The caves were so beautiful. I especially liked the drone footage of them. The butterfly painting was stunning. ❤️ sleepy Jack.
Thanks Penny! The caves were quite unexpected - I wasn’t expecting them to look like that 😊
wow butterfly painting
Thanks Sue!
Magnificent! Lovely town. I would love to enter one of those old stone houses in the village to see how people live there. The butterfly is lovely . 🌻🥰🐕🇺🇸
That coastal village looked absolutely picture perfect 😍 the style of the houses and paths, and all the flowers, and the sea, it looks like a dream location to live.
I loved the big rock formation as well, it's crazy seeing the lines mark the passage of time on it.
Your butterfly was just amazing, you are so good at all the tiny details that bring a painting to life.
Thank you for a beautiful video 🤗
Thank you so much!! These villages are so beautiful - I’ve really fallen in love with them 😍
I enjoyed that walk and another beautiful and quaint village. Your butterfly painting is stunning!! I love it! 👏 Thanks so much for another great video. 😊
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it 😊
Great combination of nature, history, architecture, and Jack. Thanks, Sarah!
Thank you Steven! So glad you liked it 😊
Hi, Lovely showing of the beautiful coastline and villages. You must be lost for choice with so much potential for your paintings, excellent rendition of the butterfly. Well done on another video full of joy and talent, thanks for taking us along. Have a great week.
Those echinop blue globe flowers are beautiful. I have some in my garden. Beautiful painting and thank you for yet another lovely walk. 🙂
Thank you! I was wondering what those flowers were called but forgot to look them up 😊
Not only gorgeous day but gorgeous country.
Every time i just think about my life and i Always found something missing in my life but I don't understand what messing but I randomly Found Your chennal I'm Very happy really very very Peaceful to watch your videos Thank you so much ❤
Another very enjoyable video. I will never get to Scotland unfortunately so you take me on an adventure each week.
Your paintings are fantastic, love Jack and the filming is magnificent. Thank you so much. Watching DSOScotland as I send this of to you. You are both so talented.
All the best to both of you and Jack.
Aww thank Judith! So glad I can bring a bit of this country to you at home 😊
What a great way to collect photos and take away new memories. Michigan USA
Thank you, Sarah. A beautiful walk with Jack Spaniels. And it's lovely to see your water colours .
That butterfly is AMAZING! I loved watching you add the black. It was like magic. Just gorgeous!
Thanks for another lovely walk and awesome painting. Jack looks worn out at the end, but cute as ever. Thanks so much, have a great week!
He was super tired! Must have been all those steps, tail wags and dips in the sea haha! So glad you liked it 😊
Your butterfly reminds me of the monarch butterfly (that I usually see this time of year). There are not many monarch butterflies anymore. The milk weed that they live on has been almost killed out. You have many beautiful rock formations and views. Jack always has a wonderful time. He's a very lucky dog. Thank you fr this video.
Thanks Arvetta! Monarch butterflies are also so beautiful, so many to see (and maybe paint!)
Great walk Sarah, thank you! Loved the rock formations and the colors. Wow! The butterfly was beautiful as always!
Thanks Kristin! So glad you liked it 😊
I do miss she walks she paints. Have gone back to watch again lol
I love the houses and buildings and the narrow streets. Very quaint. The wild flowers and the rugged coast line are so beautiful. Our rocky coastline is made a lot of smooth rounded granite, sandstone cliffs and other cliffs that go straight down and show various layers of different types of stone. The Scotland coast line has finger like lines of jagged rocks on an angle to the shore. Incredible how they’ve been carved by the sea.
The coastline here really is amazing. It’s also so different around the country - sometimes it’s dramatic cliffs and sometimes jagged lines of rock like here. I love it all!
Such Beautiful scenery and flowers! My word I have never seen a rosehip so huge! and the wild chamomile...wow! So mant rich textures all around you! I absolutely love the butterfly! Beautiful!
Thank you again Sarah for the grand views of the scottish countryside. Those rocks are amazing! It appears that Jacks energizers finally ran down. 🐾🥰 And as always your paintings are wonderful!' 🥰❤️
Thanks Tina! So glad you enjoyed it 😊 I think between all the miles walked and all the swimming opportunities, we managed to wear Jack out finally…at least until we got home!
Hi Sarah. Thank you so much for your videos. Makes me want to move to Scotland even more than I already do. Your videos are so relaxing and it's so fun to see the enthusiasm of Jack. Willie does a good job on the video to make it come to life and make me feel like I'm there with you.
Thanks Tami! So glad you like my videos 😊👍
The wee cottage with the two chimneys would be an easy fixer up for you and Willie. And what a place to live! Beautiful hills, clouds, flowers and Willie could become a fisherman? Maybe? No? But what a place to live. Just add a roof, a few windows and move the Butter fly bush to the front yard. Oh what paintings you could do! Only draw back is finding a bottle tip for him to dig in. Can you imagine the labor to build the protected cove for the boats! All that stone to set! I love the houses. Reminds me of Germany. I lived in a tiny town that had houses over barns for animals. So clean, we swept our street curbs every other day. I miss the European cleanliness. I am still amazed at your talent. That butterfly looks like it could fly off the page.
Aww thanks Mary! Yes it certainly could be a wonderful house, with a LOT of work 😅 Jack would absolutely love it - he’d never be out of the sea haha!
Hello Sarah. I've been watching some of your videos this evening and found them delightful. The beautiful scenery paired with Willie's lovely music makes for a very relaxing pass time and then watching you paint is the cherry on top. Both of you are very talented and appear to be living your best life. Blessings on you both... and Jack Spaniels, of course.
Adding the black and deals made the butterfly come to life. I'm so impressed with your paintings Sarah. Can't wait for your next adventure with Jack.
Thanks Joann! The black markings were so satisfying to paint 😊 So glad you liked it too!
I absolutely love going on your walks with you and seeing your beautiful paintings at the end!!! Willie has definitely found his most beautiful treasure in you!!! Love from South Africa 🇿🇦
Aww thank you so much!
Scotland is so beautiful. That rock formation was amazing. Imagine living in it, all the rooms, a stunning view every day at the sea. Sitting on top to watch the sun rise. 😘
The villages were fabulous. Like you said, colorful. How interesting to have a communal clothesline with an assigned day. How disappointed you'd be if it rained that day😩
The butterfly was awesome. The texture of the body comes through so well.
Thanks for sharing.🤗😍😎 jack and his stick😂
Thanks Karen! So glad you liked it 😊 I thought that too about the washing lines haha! Always a risk in Scotland 🤣
So, So Talented, Love the weekly Journey and History
Thank you Clifford! So glad you liked it 😊
Jack must be part fish…he so loves the water…I do, too, Jack!
The villages were lovely. The character-filled buildings, beautiful plantings, ocean views - such a wonderful walk.
Thanks!! Yup Jack is our wee water baby (unless it’s a nice warm bath, in which case he avoids it like the plague…🤦♀️). So glad you liked this one 😊
Haha! That’s funny that a warm bath is a “no go”.
My wife and I did the same walk vary recently when we stayed at my friend's house in Cellardyke. Beautiful walk. Dof lived it too. Thanks for sharing. Wish I was back there right now
Loved this walk...sigh. And I enjoyed Willie's new composition, especially on the approach to the crag.
Thanks Alana! Willie does a brilliant job on the music doesn’t he? 🥰
Thank you! Really enjoyed that, especially watching on a cold, snowy January afternoon, lovely painting!😊
Thanks! So glad you liked it :)
Ok so many things to say about this episode! Those caves...seeing them sat me down smack dab in the middle of one of my favorite book series, Earth's Children, about cavemen (I can't think of a better word right now). It was almost an out of body experience. The painting, beautiful as always. This is another one where every time I think you're finished, you go back and add more detail that makes such a big impact on the painting. I am going to start listening to the intro with my eyes closed so I'll be surprised by what you decide to paint. And lastly, that shot of Jack Spaniels asleep in the backseat, straight to my heart.
Aww yeah he was super cute in the backseat wasn’t he? Good idea about keeping your eyes closed and trying to guess what I pick haha! Let me know next time if you got it right..
That is so therapeutic thanks enjoy a koffee 🙂
Thanks Robin!!
I am happy to see you again😉
Wow!! amazing footage Loved watching it! Thanks for sharing with us
An exhausted Jack Spaniels, I don't believe it 😲 Those villages look so beautiful, would love to live in one of the cottages over-looking the lovely coastline
Haha! It lasted all of about 10 minutes 🤣😴 Our friend actually lives in the second village, with a beautiful view over the sea 😍 We also have a sea view but unfortunately there’s a lamppost right in the middle haha!
That was a beautiful walk, Sarah,Jack, and the unseen Willie. It is so cute that Jack will bound ahead and then wait for you to catch up. He knows he should be constantly guarding you, but he just can’t curb his enthusiasm to see what is ahead. Your attention to the slightest detail in your painting is awesome. I also love that you explain what you are doing. I really enjoyed your new music. Nice to have a live-in composer!
Thanks Kathy! Yeah - it is useful having Willie around. He’s a man of many talents 😊 I think he enjoys not having to be on camera for my videos though haha! so glad you enjoyed this walk!
Lots of pretty wild flowers out there! Those are some neat caves. Very beautiful village. As usual your paintings come out so beautiful. Thank you for another great video.
Thanks Sally! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Amazing walk, the coastline and villages are beautiful. Love your painting Sarah and the music is perfect Willie. Take care and thank you for sharing 👏👍❤️
Thank you Chris!! I’ve really fallen in love with this bit of the coast - it’s so pretty!
Sarah,
Houses full of Character or is it Characters?
Many of these people have Character, but not all are characters.
Sometimes, like that village, character can mean something quite different,
like weather worn or craggy.
What a fun walk and ending with a fool the eye butterfly!
John F. Peto was a famous Trompe L'oiel artist like William Harnett
who lived in Island Heights , New Jersey, not far from my former home around the turn
of the 29th Century.
Zoe Wanamaker, the British American Actor's Grandfather Father had a summer compound for the Wanamaker Store employees on the island, as well.
Your realistic paintings follow the fool the eye tradition.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
I love your paintings, Sarah. Im a very amateur watercolorist, can you tell me what a watercolor pen is?! Thank you for taking us on your walks, its a beautiful way to see Scotland. I watched the video where willie recorded your painting music! I love it! Cheers from Pennsylvania, USA
Aww thank you! Watercolour pens are just what they sound like - they have a brush tip and pigment inside them, which is water soluble. I find myself more and more using a tile to mix/dilute the colour from the pens but I also like that you can use them to apply pigment direct to the page for more intense colour. They work for me, but I know they aren’t for everyone. Hope that helps!
Thanks for responding Sarah!
Thanks!
Beautiful butterfly. So much talent.
Thank you Kathy! So glad you liked it 😊
Stunning location. Nearest shoreline to me is Blackpool, say no more!
Beautiful illustration Sarah 😊
Loved the video Sarah, maybe my favourite! Been away for a bit so this is a bit late! Lovely painting as usual, best regards, John.
I so enjoy each of your walks. I know I sound like a broken record, but you're incredibly talented. I also LOVE the new song Willie made for you, it's VERY engaging 😊 Much love from Florida ❤
Thank you so much Tammara! So glad you like my videos 😊 Your continued support is much appreciated!
It’s years since I did that whole walk so I really enjoyed this video!
It was such a lovely walk! So glad we did it and glad you enjoyed it 😊
Thank you so much for another stunning video 😀
You are very welcome Andrew! So glad you liked it 😊
Awesome scrnery
It's amazing how much your cliffs/caves resemble ours in UT and AZ! Excellent walk, beautiful painting. Thanks Suzy
I really thought of those ones when I was there. I’ve only ever seen photographs (although I would love to visit someday), but they immediately reminded me of them!
Love all you do!! Blessings
Aww thank you Jeanne!
Your butterfly is absolutely wonderful
Thank you!!
Beautiful work, Sarah! And I so enjoyed the Cellardyke-Crail 'walk', too! Thank you. We have Gulf Fritillaries here in California, USA...one of my faves.
Thanks Colleen! I never really knew about fritillary butterflies before this - there are so many gorgeous kinds!
another great video. I have run out of original superlatives for you. I wait impatiently each week to see what you have done for us.
Aww thanks Ivan! Every comment is appreciated 😊
Look forward to visiting Scotland again in future... Just wish housing estates would stop being planted everywhere in the UK... Lovrly painting again 😁
Ahh yeah there are a lots of those in Fife too 😕 We try to avoid them as much as we can though!
Beautiful!
Thank you Denise!
Beautiful.
Thank you Anna!!
Beautiful walk, as always. I was wondering if you could do an "equipment" video where you show what you take along on your hikes? My daughter and I go for hikes when we can, and I am always interested to see what other people have in their packs.
Also would be great if you could post in the description how long (in distance) your hikes are.
Hi Jeanette! Thanks for your comment 😊 I was thinking of doing a wee short video on my walking gear at some point, so you have spurred me on to do that! I always note how far I walk in the video description (click the text beneath the video to see it), but I will try to start including it in the video itself too 👍
Beautiful walk along the coast and your butterfly is so intricate and detailed…..how long does it take to paint in real time?
That probably took around 12-14 hours over a few days 😊
Zonked
Haha yeah he was! 🥰
I love watching your videos and reading your comments as you hike, but the font you use is hard to read (for me, anyway!) No offense intended. Could you use a simpler font? Your painting was, of course, beautiful.
Thanks Cathy! Sorry to hear that you are struggling to read the font. I chose it as I liked the style, but I tried to make it as easy to read as I could by using all caps, but I could have another look at the ones available 😊👍
