I live in the Pacific Northwest, where the Raven was regarded as a trickster, neither hero nor villain. The native people tell us that Raven brought fire, water, and the sun to the world. I’ve always loved ravens, so to hear about their place in other mythologies was really interesting.

Ravens and Crows are extremely smart birds and my grandparents house had several Ravens living around them. They were very interested in what we would do around the back yard. They seemed to enjoy human interaction and would bring shiny trinkets to my grandmother and leave them on her kitchen windowsill. Some ended up being actual rings and jewelry. Who knows where they got these items from? But every week there would be something there and they would watch her go outside and retrieve it. She always acknowledged them and would leave something as a treat for them like birdseed or some other type of food. These were smart creatures and if you were kind to them they would show their appreciation.

I'm confused. I love crows and ravens and I just found out that my brother lied to me when I was a kid. I'd seen a raven sitting on a powerline with some much smaller crows, but when I told my brother, he said that was impossible, since ravens were extinct where we lived. I checked Wikipedia just now and... nope, ravens are just really big types of crows, and they're almost everywhere. WTF, bro?

I'm not joking when I say that when I heard that the ravens were given biscuits as a treat I put my hand over my heart and smiled, then when I heard "soaked in blood" I gasped and started cracking up, it's such a sweet idea with such a gruesome detail. I wonder what qualifies for a treat day, maybe holidays?

I really loved this video. I'd also like to add that ravens have also been associated with fire and the sun. Here are a couple of examples:
    - In Native American myths, Raven is a trickster who stole the Sun and fire and gave it to the world. However, when carrying fire in his bill, the smoke from the fire blew back and turned his feathers black. His bill began to burn, so Raven had to drop the fire. It landed in a pile of rocks and hid itself inside them. They say this is why sparks of fire drop out when you strike two stones together.
    - In the myths of East Asia, there is a creature called the 3-Legged Crow, which is believed to inhabit and represent the Sun. Adding to this, in one Chinese myth, 10 sun crows settled in 10 separate suns. They all rose in the sky at once, causing the world to burn. A celestial archer named Houyi saved the day by shooting down and killing all but one of the sun crows.
I know I said crows in that second example, but I think that, due to their similarities, crows and ravens are often used interchangeably in myths.

I read 2 stories in Native folklore.1st, the Raven was white, the earth was in darkness , the raven flew into the sky & retrieved the sun, the ravens feathers were burnt. 2nd, is there was a time when the raven told the native people to go down into the caves of the southwest, or just go below ground , they stayed there for a long time. Not until the raven came out, was it safe.

Another amazing video! I love Ravens. I actually have a tattoo of Hugin and Munin on my left arm. The first I ever got. As you said, they are Odins' birds. Flying around the nine worlds and keeping him informed. In old norse Hugin means 'thought' and Munin means 'memory'. There is also something called a 'valravn'. A man turned into a raven feasting on the dead on the battlefield. He can only be turned back into human form if he drinks the blod of a boy.

We must be related! My grandmother fell in love with a tribe member from a reservation somewhere near Dallas around 1923, and had my mom. It was an open secret, I've never seen anyone look more like a central casting Indian in my life, my mom had straight black hair, black eyes and very high cheek bones and a hawk nose. She had an absolutely ferocious temper that no one, especially my dad, ever wanted to rouse. She taught me a lot about nature, dowsing, "talking" over long distances, and she could attract any wild bird to light on her hands. She died a long time ago, but we still have a connection....

    • @christineparis5607
      @christineparis5607 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

It's not an omen, it is a recognition of your ability to see. Ravens seem attracted to those who can sense the dead. Forget all the Christian demonization of old myths, the raven has great wisdom that accepts death as a part of life. You have a gift, so think back on your life and instances where you knew things, felt things or experienced something others did not. Being connected to all of life and death is the way to wisdom.
Never be afraid, the church wanted people to be afraid of wisdom so they could be controlled. There is nothing to fear.

Here in Australia, ravens were brought here by colonial England from the tower of London so they were transported to ! But from those few pairs came millions all over Australia apart from pecking out the eyes of new born lamb, and then they have to put down the little lambs , but these ravens and crows are a very intelligent bird able to work out some very complex things for instance putting wall nuts and macadamia nuts on country rds for cars to run over and crack open then retrieving the open nuts, rewarding people with small gifts ie clothes pegs straws etc when given food and my mum use to feed the ravens with mince and every day the neighbours pegs were on the windows sil , so thier very cunning and smart cheers laura thankyou for a top story .

Wonderful - I love ravens, though to be fair, I love all birds, though Corvids are particularly fascinating.
I used to see an impressively large raven in woodland near me - a magnificent, very knowing bird - it used to stand just off a path, silently observing people passing by - funnily enough there is a beautiful building within yards of where I used to see it, which was used as a wedding venue - my sister even got married there.
On a separate note, I'm sure that you've been told this many times before, but you are arguably* the best speaker on this platform - in fact I'd argue that you're amongst the best speakers on any form of media.
I very nearly cheered out loud when you said, "medieval".
So many people, particularly (on television) historians, who really should know better, say, "medevel" - a practice that really drives me crazy.
It has been pointed out to me that I'm getting annoyed about nothing, which I can (reluctantly) accept.
There are bigger problems in the World today than the pronunciation of a certain word.......but, I'd suggest that everyone is allowed one irrational 'trigger'.
Susie Dent, (Ch4 Countdown & The OED) takes a very laissez-faire attitude; that language is constantly evolving, and there's no right or wrong, as long as you're understood - the less said about that the better, in my humble opinion.
It may be considered old fashioned or stuffy, but it shouldn't be difficult for people, (particularly in the public eye) to speak with clarity and the correct enunciation - I'm not talking about returning to RP, but if you're being paid to communicate, then you should be able to talk clearly.
That's one of the many reasons why I enjoy your channel so much - so thank you.
*Now, I did write "arguably", but I'm going to suggest 'Nature's Temper' too, though I can't remember his actual name off the top of my head.
I think that's fair enough - one woman and one man, and both English (I believe he's from Cheshire) despite the fact that many English people do appalling things to their own language, and I'm a Scotsman.

It’s pretty gross that they clip the wings of ravens at the Tower of London. But this is a lovely video!!!! I’ve never seen a raven in real life, but we have crows galore in my area and I love them!

A flock of Ravens is called a conspiracy or unkindness. A flock of crows is called a murder. A flock of Corvids is called a parliament. 😊

A few days before my dad passed I had a dream of 3 black crows or ravens. I believe they can be symbols of death but I’m not frightened by them, just really intrigued.

What if you just have like 2 to 4 ravens that just follow you around and stare at your house and you just hear them all damn day. In fact they seem to have to build a nest somewhere in my yard and they sit in the tree across from my front porch and I shit you not 2 of them just sit on the very highest branch and stare at me until it gets awkward and I just go inside.

Clipping their wings is cruel and unnecessary bc they are smart creatures, just treat them right I used to feed a Raven that fell out of it's nest when it grew up it flew away but it still visits me, it was like hard to believe

i must admit that I associate the raven with the more darker side of nature. Not that the bird itself is evil, but merely a messenger that something important has happened or is yet to happen.
So, indeed when a raven lands near a person or somewhere where you can see it, it always makes me a bit nervous and yet the birds are very clever and even majestic in my opinion.
But I see the raven themselves not as evil, maybe in my mind, they pick up on certain darker elements of man or nature and show themselves as if to say to the person who happens to see them: "something has happened of great importance or will happen eventually". "Watcher, beware of my presence".
This is how I see ravens. But as explained in this documentary , I'm very much influenced by lets say Edgar allen poe's "nevermore" or other slightly sinister descriptions of the nature of the birds.

I'm a little surprised you didn't mention Edgar Allan Poe's most famous work in this one. Although, I guess that would be a little too on the nose. Although it did get referenced in Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods.
Shadow: (to a raven) Hey, say Nevermore.
    Raven: Fuck you.
