    It is 100% hot rod 100+ circuit, which is the SLO circuit. Some part values were changed from SLO to Hot Rod to accomodate different value pots. Mathmaticaly it works out identical. Real world, slight difference in tone. Schematics are interchangeble. It is a Soldano amp built in China. Just re-tube and bias and in a blind test they sound the same. I've played a SLO, a HR25 & own a JCA50 & a couple of 22's for practice. GREAT AMP's.

      It's the more middy one I know it well. you can mod it...real ones SCREAMED load one with Sylvania's/Phillips etc...GOD through V30s still.

  • @bigppbigproblems

    Proud owner of a JCA100HDM. The secret of tone is to use either an Eminence Legend or a Celestion Greenback for the mid response. personally i use a v30 but its not ideal for this amp. The 100hdm is a complete clone of the HotRod 100+ with chinese parts and the jca22h is a clone of the HotRod25 but with el84s. it also has a slightly better loop.
    Cheers!

    • @bigppbigproblems

      Brian Jones the 22h is the preamp and fx loop of the hotrod25 and the power amp of the Atomic/Astroverb 16 with chinese parts specced to his design. so it's very close but not quite. It is it's own animal.

      How do you think an Eminece Governor/Wizard mix would sound? I know Governors are based off v30s, but they don't have that harsh mid range spike v30s have. I play a bright high gain Marshall through this combo now and it sounds good.

    Jet city is a great brand. I bought after many years of playing guitar a custom 22 as my first tube amp 6 month ago (i didn't have the money so i played for years on my low end beginer amp), and it just blew my mind. Jet city tones are just great, and for the money that's a million times worth it . Btw great playing as always! And is that a new guitar? ;)

    I had one of these in high school, while I was playing in my first serious band. I was playing some pretty rocking stuff at the time, so it fit perfectly. A poor kid's Soldano! All I remember was it was very, very loud. And very, very crunchy!

    Love these. I've got the 50 watt head with the depth mod and it's ridiculous. The gain is so articulate and sensitive! I used to use a 6505+ and it was just a little to grainy sounding for what I wanted, I made a straight trade for the Jet City and I honestly feel bad for the guy because the Jet City is so much more versatile and articulate.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, poor guy. Yes! The depth control adds so much to the tone, can't imagine a Soldano-style amp without one.

    • @Kibatsume94
      @Kibatsume94 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agufish Unfortunately, the 50 watt version doesn't come with a depth knob. Most people don't know, but it's actually incredibly easy to add one. Costs maybe $15, and if you've ever used a soldering iron it's not hard. Considering how cheap it is though, I always wondered why it wasn't included in the 50 watt version. Killer video by the way!

  • @NathanLukeSmith
    @NathanLukeSmith 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It sounds like a great amp! The reason the amp loses a lot of volume with the effects loop is because it's designed to work with rack gear which runs at line level instead of whatever guitar level is.
    Great video by the way!

      @MuffDiver71 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TehQSAclan Its honestly a great amp for the money. Definitely needs to be pushed for some good crunch though, so I highly recommend an attenuator. I'm pretty sure my tubes are at the end of life. I'll be replacing them soon and sending the amp to Epic-Tone to be modded.
      But good amp for $400. I would totally buy another one.

    • @TehQSAclan
      @TehQSAclan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MuffDiver71 would it be a good first tube amp? Been playing on my katana for a long time now seeking something I can get some high gain tones from, not the most modern tight tone but something close

    • @MuffDiver71
      @MuffDiver71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TehQSAclan Absolutely. It's my first tube head. But definitely get an attenuator like the Captor X or something. Its fucking LOUD and theres not a lot of gain down at low volumes. An overdrive helps too though. But if I'm playing at really low volume (like bedroom level), I use my Metal Zone into the clean. This amp is switchable between 100w and 50w, but the volume difference is negligible.
      I came from a Peavey Vypyr 30 before this, so similar to a Katana.

    These Jet City amps are a modders dream. Old school design and easy to work on or mod and there are some amazing mods out there for cheap that have been designed by the likes of Friedman himself. You can turn your Jet City into a monster that you'd have to spend a couple grand on otherwise. Cool company.

  • @81giorikas
    @81giorikas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sounds pretty good especially vs the custom 22 video.
    But still not like a soldano but the hint is, the jet city pretty much mimics the dual channel hot rod 50 and hot rod 100 series which have the SLO preamp (with changes) and the filtering on the power amp is way, way looser vs the SLO/Avenger.
    So nothing like the SLO (stock that is) but more accessible sound in lower volumes somewhat.
    Nothing like a good avenger also. Darker and muddier in comparison.
    But for this price? Nothing really to complain about.

    Hi Hunter. Great vid! Recently subscribed and really enjoy your reviews.
    I guess you are only one of the few people on the internet who could provide me with an answer.
    I need a new amp for my new band (currently play a blackstar ht5, with was cool with my old band where everybody was on in ears, but now just isn't loud enough competing with a 100w plexi) and really dig the Jet Cities, but I'm torn between the 100hdm and the custom22, mostly because of the crunch channel. Which crunch channel do you prefer, and do u use the bright switch and mid-boost/low fat switches on the custom22? Do the overdrive channels sound the same (apart from the power tubes)?
    For me/in my mind, the ideal amp would be a 100hdm with modded custom22 crunch channel or a 100 watt custom22 with depth control :P

  • @annonuhm617
    @annonuhm617 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I own that amp. Bought it the moment it came out.
    Maybe you should mention that this head needs retubing and rebiasing before it will ever sound close to a Soldano. But most important is that it has a BIG design flaw. The effects loop is not only designed for rack gear putting out signals on line level (ergo not pedal friendly), it also comes BEFORE the EQ. And the amp is super bright. So every time you dial out the treble, your delay and reverb effects in the loop get their high frequencies ruined. Sounds terrible.
    Unless you want a dry rythm sound for metal and have a technician at hand and enough money for better tubes: Don't buy it. If you do: Buy mine. If only i could find it, it fled into some dark corner when my GH50R showed up^^

    What I'd love to know is the difference with the 50w version? Is there any difference beside the obvious 50w power amp? I absolutely don't need 100w since I'm only doing studio work, so I wonder if the 50w wouldn't be enough to get similar tone. And then, what about the 22w? Can any users tell me if this amp is capable of doing an ultra-clean(yet loud) with switching to a super gained up tone on the other channel? ie. are the channel gains completely discrete from each other?

    • @bartosz9991
      @bartosz9991 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use crunch channel to 1-2 at pre amp to get pretty clean tone. Overdrive channel set at 7-9 to get solid punchy drive. Mostly I use crunch channel 1-2 at pre amp(to get clean sound), overdrive channel 2-3 at pre amp(to get light overdrive) and finally I fire up overdrive channel witch distortion pedal to get fat heavy metal sound. That way I have 3 different kind of sound.

    I've had this amp for 7 months and it's still holding up well, is had all tubes re placed with TAD 6L6 and JJ tubes. I use a oversized Mesa 4x12 can and I can't get a good tone out of it :/
    It sounds ok but I think I'm just shit at dialing tones. I usually run it 5.5/10 gain, 5.5 bass, 4 mids, 5.5 treble, 3 presence, volume on 3 and 6 depth on 100 watt mode.
    When standing about 2 metres back from the Mesa cab it sounds kinda shitty but I don't know if it's cause it's loud. When I play it at a similar level to shouting volume, it sounds fucking god like.
    I've found It sounds a lot better to me with Marshall 1960a cab.
    But yeah I don't know if amps are meant to sound way to trebley and I'm used to hearing the micced up sound but all my amps sound shit when turned up loud.

      This amp needs to be cranked a good bit to come alive, and then its a totally different animal, I got a Jettenuater for mine and have both masters on the amp set at 5, which would deafen you but you bring the volume way back down with the Jettenuater, totally rocks then, you'll need a way less gain dialled in as well, which helps massively with the articulation and tightness of the amp. Gain on the overdrive channel is at 4, which is tons when the master volume is high. Running the gain at 10 is just going to give you mush, so back it off to 5 or 6, and give it a clean boost with a pedal in the front.

    Anyway, this Jet City amp it's a monster! In my country you can buy this Jet City model for 400/450€ (including taxes). Obviously when use much gain the sound tends to have a lack of transparency, however, the sound is acceptable (I don't expect the clarity of a Diezel or a Friedman amps of course!). I think it's one of the best amp for the price in the market with that power.
