Yeah there is still Beastly which is basically a modern adaptation of the story and its movie basically butchered it. Don’t think he’ll do Belle though since that one is actually good.
"Merlin's Shop Of Mystical Wonders" The MST3k classic where earnest Borgnine tells a kid a story about burning cats/dogs alive, while a toy monkey wreaks havoc on a family. Fun!
Honestly, Don Quixote is actually a pretty cool novel. He gets beaten up a lot but he actually does win most of his fights unless blatantly outnumbered or disadvantaged in some way, and he's genuinely intelligent; it's just that everyone indulges his madness. Also, the windmill scene is like 2 pages long if that.
And it got the 1600s version of Golden Films /Dingo Pictures treatment, as there's many unauthorized sequel novels that were released when it got popular, we know this because the actual sequel from the same author as the original novel included some choice words about the bootleg sequels cashing in on his work.
@Boltscrap There is literally a running joke that one of the bootleg novels actually exists in Don Quixote's universe, written by someone who heard some stories about the guy and added his own helping of bullshit. Don Quixote will enter a scene and a character will go "Oh you must be Don Quixote! I read your book. I really like the adventure where you did x" and Don Quixote will be confused because x is some bullshit he did in one of the bootleg sequels. In the first book, Don Quixote's goal was to participate in a tournament in Barcelona. In the second book, when he and Sancho are right outside the city, Don Quixote decides to turn around and go back home specifically because his unauthorized biography said that he fought in the tournament (several months before Don Quixote ever went on his second adventure) and he doesn't want to give the fraudster the satisfaction of accidentally being right.
I actually watched an incredibly well done street play based on the novel! It wasn't an exact adaptation, but they had good acting, live music, a giant windmill prop that could change into a monster that could be moved, and a horse prop that actually looked fantastical, yet somehow realistic (it was all incredibly well done).
I think it's pretty funny to have "Morgan" tell the Merlin's tales in Merlin's (Magic) Cave. Cuz wasn't Morgan the name of one of Arthur and Merlin's enemies? This implies they're no longer around but don't worry their good buddy Morgan is still here to take care of their stuff because she killed them.
Well, in one legend, she DID helpt to trick Merlin into the tree that sealed him forever. And yes, she is one of the villians of the story, mainly being Mordred's momma.
Actually in the very original telling Morgan wasn't the villain she also wasn't related to Arthur in any way she wasn't even human she was a benevolent trickster fairy queen who would mess with Arthur and co sometimes and by the end she carried Arthur to the fairy realm to restore him.
It's Mère Lusine, from ACTUALLY Western myth that inspired Morgan Le FAE, ie. faerie folk. So she's really Melusine, the First Witch. You who call 340m people "Americans" but not the 700m from Latin America have nothing to do with Western Rome, you're Abrahamics from bibilical Middle-East.

8:31 Phelous mentionning we're getting the story of yet another Beauty's father "being an a$$ in a castle" made me laugh way more than it should have. The delivery, the music, Old Man creeping up on screen... It was all too perfect.
Ironically "The Secret of Beauty and the Beast" would make FAR more sense than "The Secret of the Hunchback" or Mulan or Anastasia. Beauty and the Beast IS a story all about transformation and it is (some times) the twist so... yeah. Makes far more sense than "he was an angel" or "they became musical instruments" or just.... "bugs"🤷♂
What an unusual VHS, but not gonna lie, there's something really pretty about the (Not VHS butchered) animation of this "Beauty And The Beast". The stylization of the characters with that thin, inky lineart makes for some really nice visuals, it'd work really well as art for a children's fantasy storybook! "Don Quixote" too, but in addition to that one it really REALLY seems like the people working on it took inspiration from Van Gogh for the backgrounds! It's really stunning in my opinion! Thank you again for sharing, Phelous!
Manga Sekai Musashi Banashi was actually pretty neat for its time. It aired 2 episodes a week (if I remember correctly) and had different teams doing the stories. Not a big budget or perfect adaptations, but they'd experiment with different art styles and covered a lot of obscure stories. I have a lot of episodes on my channel if you don't mind watching it in Japanese
Man, those anime fairy tales unlocked a core memory. I remember I watching these in Mexico when I was younger and then I had the Snow White DVD at one point and I considered her as waifu material lol I was a weird kid back then.
You're not the only one. My birthplace of Greece had aired a Snow White anime and many other anime based on fairy tales and public domain properties. I was a toddler at the time when I first discovered these in the early 2000s. Some of them would later air in my home country of Albania. There were also 3 anime based on Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood and the The Three Little Pigs dubbed in greek and released on VHS which I have them in Albania. However I can hardly find them on Google and Wikipedia. I remember that all three of them were under a brand called Star Video I think but it doesn't show up on Google either. it's like that brand had never even existed. These 3 movies might be considered lost media at this point. Shame because I wish Phelous would cover them in this channel.
Well to be fair to you, the mirror *did* tell you she topped its Hotness Meter ™. Kids are impressionable, so if a mirror says that you had every right to believe it.
I remember this series too, I had a tape with 4 different stories, and I remember always being a bit scared to watch it since 3/4 stories involved animals dying. Also, hearing that theme song in the beginning threw me for a nostalgic loop!
I lived overseas when I was little & the TALES OF MAGIC version of "Snow White" was the first one I ever saw. And yeah, her design was really, really pretty.
Huh... interesting how this Beauty and the Beast cartoon predicted that Beast would save Beauty from wild animals like in the Disney film, only in this case it was a hawk instead of a pack of wolves.
Speaking of anime adaptations of fairy tales, as a kid I remember watching _The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,_ which was an anime, though at the time I was so young that I wouldn't know what an anime was if you told me. It adapts four _Oz_ novels, quite faithfully too. I actually re-watched it just a few years ago, and it really holds up. I recall as a kid seeing one episode that ends on a cliffhanger, an egg rolling down stairs towards a Nome army, and then missing the next episode, then coming back the next day to see what was clearly the first episode. Turns out I missed the final episode, and I was only when I rewatched the whole thing online did I finally get closure.
As someone who has an interest in old fairy/ folk tales, I really love that you review these obscure tellings of old stories. It's super interesting seeing all these different interpretations of these tales. And when paired with the insane amount of research you do on these and it makes for really interesting videos even beyond the jokes. I honestly can't think of another channel like yours in that regard
0:26 - 0:44 I'll never know what "the Secret of" series was getting at. Hunchback gives the impression they're gonna put twists on old stories to teach a lesson (don't judge appearances), but then go to Anastasia's "twist just because", to Mulan's "no twist at all".
"I want to marry you, but don't touch me!" Oh, so the Beast is Hans Christian Andersen (No really, there's stories in which Hans would meet a famous opera singer or actor/actress, professing his immense desire to marry them, only to be then turned off at the idea of being intimate with them. He was basically a hopeless bi-romantic asexual)

But otherwise that movie is GOERGEOUS and is a unique take on the concept.

You used to see facial expressions and character designs (like the bald guys in the Noah segment) like that all the time in anime. Just a bit nostalgic~
I actually watched that 'Noah's Ark' short once in Sunday School as a kid, (disconnected from the other shorts) and years later, I learned that in some editions of the Bible, it apparently mentions that an angel (or possibly one of Noah's daughters-in-law) "summoned" the animals to the ark with music. I couldn't remember much of the movie, but the image on the VHS is burned into my memory lol. I tried so hard to find it and now you have. 😁!!! Oh my god! I've seen episodes of this anime. There was a dvd in my apartment complex's library that was about the Little Mermaid, but the cover featured Disney's Ariel with her hair photoshopped blonde. The DVD included that Noah's Arc cartoon. It was just called Kid's Klassic.

Just when I was thinking, "Aww, Morgan is kinda cute", you showed that awkward close-up of her and I was "uh... I take back what I said".
YAAAAY The return of this! I wonder what local Old Man will be like?
The "You're welcome" got me every time. lol Merlin's Shop of Mystical Bootlegs.
I am impressed that it's been 10 year since you did the very first Beauty and the Beast review, and it got me interested in your channel and the obscure world of bootleg animation
I never get tired of the countless animated Beauty & the Beast adaptions you cover, you're amazing man
Babe wake up Phelous returned
I really digging the beast art style
1:00 Well, there's a mockbuster company that both admits it and still lies in another way!
5:46 Nice to know Rainbow Brite has a cousin she doesn't like talking about
I love that you referenced my favorite episode of MST3K in this one ❤
The Puma man music always gets a chuckle but I forgot the Merlin riff and caught me off guard. 😂
Phelous: ”You’re welcome!”
It's always fun, Clicking on this Channel, and enjoy these obscured cartoon movies thank you phelous
Beast fighting the hawk with a clothes hanger at about 12 minutes in was an absolutely hilarious touch 😂
Watching the VHS tracking issues REALLY took me back. Even as a kid whenever I saw that a tape came from UAV, Starmaker, Video Treasures and of course, GOODTIMES, you'd guaranteed to get quite the mixed bag 😂
A new addition to Phelan's ever growing list of Beauty and the Beast animated adaptations!
Thank you so much for this!!! My parents bought this VHS for me for a $1 from the grocery store when I was a kid. I couldn't remember much of the movie, but the image on the VHS is burned into my memory lol. I tried so hard to find it and now you have. 😁!!! Finally I have closure because I'm pretty sure I didn't like it when I watched it and it sat in the video cabinet until it was discarded. This really made my day. Thumbs up & Like!!
Sounds like you were fully delighted.
The beast fighting a hawk with a coat hanger is a brilliant touch.
the glitchy vhs clips made me laugh out loud in the bus lol
Ah, another beauty's father for your collection... (one day you're gonna have to do a beauty's dad ranking video)
We all know who the top Old Man is so everyone else will have to fight for second place. 😁
The beast design here isn't too bad! Interesting how both the animes have decently designed Beasts.
12:30 The Beast fighting off the hawk with a coat hanger is sending me 🤣
the red balloon becomes the dead balloon
That Three Little Pigs anime adaptation look super adorable!
Congratulations on your Number 10 BATB review! Always great to see a new one of these segments! Gotta give UAV credit for actually telling people they aren’t Disney, haha! Great job on your review as usual!
Adding the hanger to the scene where the beast was fighting the hawk was brilliant!
loved the "that beast sure makes Don Juan look like Don Quixote" it really was accurate and a snarky line. Double win!
oh ok but "i lost my balloon" "don't worry, babe, i bought us a hot air balloon" is 1800s romance tastic!
Beast Quixote sounds like a cool story tbh.
Phelous is really out here doing the devil’s?/the lord’s? work by not only finding these obscure animated features, but then also finding the best video quality version and syncing the English tracks to them
That little witch title card image stirred up a long-buried memory. I swear I used to see these occasionally on TVO way back when. Possibly in French.
Oh my god! I've seen episodes of this anime. There was a dvd in my apartment complex's library that was about the Little Mermaid, but the cover featured Disney's Ariel with her hair photoshopped blonde. The DVD included that Noah's Arc cartoon. It was just called Kid's Klassic.
