    I'm convinced that what Boomers want more than anything is to be told that their horrible childhood experiences were normal and fine. They were strong for suffering in silence. It breaks them when they hear that hitting kids etc. is abuse, because then they have to reckon with the reality that what happened to them wasn't normal, it wasn't okay, and they're a victim. If telling men that they can't cry etc. is bad, then what happened to them as children was bad. They can't handle it. My Papa told me once "If I was out after the streetlights had turned on I'd get in some real trouble.", so yeah I think the joke is that kids don't go outside enough to know that..? But people have portable phones with the time on them now, so no kid with a phone (which is most kids, at least kids at the ages parents are comfortable with them being out alone at nowadays) would need to know that. So yeah, if you're old school you'd know that meaning of the streetlight.

    The point of the streetlight one is that back when our parents played outside with friends, they had a lot more freedom and the general rule was "be home when the streetlights come on." It's funny though because my mom and other people her age would talk about that all the time, but were too scared to give us the same freedoms. It wasn't that we didn't want to play outside. It was the growth of the 24 hour news cycle and fear mongering. (For context, my mom was born in the early 70s, my dad in the late 60s, and me in the mid 90s). Now with the rise of cell phones, I'm seeing more kids being granted a bit more freedom again since parents can get ahold of them any time anywhere (though of course helicopter parents still exist and not every kid wants to play outside as much with the rise of cheap and fun technology)

While it’s much less condescending, you could argue that the world that the previous generation created isn’t safe enough, or was never safe enough, to let children just run around with no supervision “until dark”, especially with the constant tearing down of natural surroundings, like trees, parks, hiking trails, and fields. It’s all paved now. :(

    9:25 it's sort of about kids not going outside? in the 80's and such it was a common rule for kids in neighborhoods that they had to be home once the street lamps came on

    Hey, the street lamp one is referring to how you’d have to come home by the time they came on.

    @9:50 it meant that when the lights come on you had to go inside. My mom had this rule it was stupid because we snuck back out anyway

    Man, I wish I lived such a life of absolute privilege to where I could sit around getting offended or pretending to get offended over other random people who I don't know, have never met or may not even exist, getting offended.

    9:18 I assume it’s referring to the “get back home before the street lights come on.” I’m only 23, but my mom told me that. My brother and I joked that when the lights came on you had to book it home so you don’t get a whoopin

    the streetlamp "meme" is in reference to being told you had to be home/come in from playing outside when the streetlights came on. you were on the right track with the "kids these days dont go outside" assumption, though!

  • @cocovcoco
    @cocovcoco ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The street lamp meme was because kids would know to come home when they came on, not that kids don’t get out enough. You had a really good interpretation, though.. I never thought of it that way. ❤

    When the street lamp turns on, you have to run inside to be safe. That's what it means.❤

    Boomers are definitely rough but gen z is too, I’m gen z and there’s still awful teens and 20 year olds who feel like they can disrespect people on the internet and have no repercussions, when no, unless a person deserves it you should treat people the way they want to be treated. Like Anna said cyber bullying is a real thing and huge recently especially when gen alpha is already having access to the internet

    so that streetlamp one you were on the right track uwu~ its actually bc like my parents generation (born in the60s/70s) ((also i was born in the 2000s so)) used to play outside until the streetlights came on so they'd have to book it home, just like how there were ads that were like "do YOU know where ur child is???" would play.

    I’m with you, but the street lamp thing is a reference to parents making sure their kids are home by the time the street lamps turn on

    I just turned 40 this year and I have to say that when I talk to old friends they are starting to have these "back in the day" or "this new thing I don't get is dumb" and it's really annoying. I've started ribbing them about it.
