I would put this sound track up there with Dark Souls, and Diablo 2 as one of the greatest of all time. Seriously, nothing conveys curious unease like this track. The rest of the OST is magnificent, but this... This is something else.
every time I start DD up I wait for this part before I start. 1:28.. So layered. Moving. Might be too good for a video game. but that's a good thing. Move video game music forward
Eloquently captures the feeling of what starts as a quest to liberate your ancestral estate from eldritch horrors gradually becoming a descent into madness and despair.
I think the best thing about this theme is how it starts out creepy and chilling like a typical horror soundtrack, but then becomes sort of sorrowful and poignant like how The Ancestor is finally realizing the dire mistakes he's made. Then at 1:18 the music hits you and becomes foreboding, but with a sense of regret and depression to it. It almost says to you 'yeah, things suck and it's a crapsake world, but these monsters CAN be defeated, the evil CAN be purged, and you CAN restore your house to glory'. It gets you really hyped up and makes you want to challenge the monsters you're going to face. Nice work.
These nightmarish creatures can be felled, they can be beaten! sn: I have always seen this track as conveying both the ruinous state of the Hamlet and the grandiose majesty hidden in plain sight, it's potential to be restored. Almost like what I imagine the Parthenon to be.
"Victory... a hollow and ridiculous notion. We are born of this thing, made from it. And we will be returned to it, in time. The great family of man -- a profusion of errant flesh. Multiplying. Swarming. Living. Dying. Until the stars align in their inexorable formation, and what sleeps is roused once more, to hatch from this fragile shell of earth and rock, and bring our inescapable end... So seek solace in the manner befitting your lineage, and take up your nugatory vigil. Haunted forever by that sickening prose, echoing through the infinite blackness of space and time. Ruin has come to our family."
1:30 inspires me a mix of magnificence and overwhelmedness. The glory of the ancestor's family, the horrors of the dungeon and the drums announcing the incoming battle.
“He will be laughing still... at the end.” I absolutely adore this game. You’re a god among soundtrack designers, because this just captures the essence of this game. A chill goes down your spine booting this game up for the first time hearing that crashing chord
I love the light strings from 0:40 to 1:18. It's almost a combination of sorrow, pensiveness, and curiosity. It just gives this air of "What lies ahead? What have I gotten myself into? Is there hope of turning back? What should I do? What CAN I do?" It's amazing what music can put into your mind, really.
I practically love everything about this game but your music deserves a special mention. It just sticks with you and builds strong associations with game situations. Especially the way it slowly changes when the torch burns low. I loved "sticky" music, that doesn't just disappear in the background since warcraft2 and diablo 1 and you nailed it. Fits the theme works well for the situations. Sounds great on its own.
There have been times recently when I have loaded up the game and then left it on the main menu. Entranced by the music or paralyzed by fear, I cannot say.
Truly, Red Hook struck gold with you. I can't imagine a Darkest Dungeon experience without your sonorous influence. Thank you for lending your talents to this series.
Ancestor: Digs a hole and summons the cosmic spawn and Cthulhu itself for the lolz. Me: When will you learn?! When will you learn?! THAT YOUR ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES!
i really like the themes of both hope and hoplessness present in this game an i think this soundtrack does an amazing job at enforcing those ideas. Thank you for making such a great soundtrack for such a great game, i dont think i can imagine this game feeling the same without this soundtrack.
This might be my favorite title screen of any game I've played. The calming music transitioning into a dramatic and hopeless melody with the crimson red sky is perfect.
Dude, let me just say that your music is phenomenal! I play a lot of games, and feel that the soundtrack plays a crucial part in them. This game has some of the best music I've heard in a video game ever!
Absolutely perfect music for a perfect intro, the combined package of which tells you all you need to know about what a kind of trip into terror, ruin and bravery born of madness you're about to embark on.
After such a long time since the game came out, I still haven't been able to keep my promise. I haven't found anything similar to it that's as emotionally jarring as this soundtrack. If you take me as an individual, I'm crying with excitement. It's just probably one of the best pieces I've ever heard. I may not have heard the other one, something just as hidden from my eyes, but that doesn't negate what I'm write.
One day Mr. Chatwood I will meet with you to compose an amazing soundtrack for an upcoming show. Your music is TRUELY unique and amazing. I've never loved video game music this much in my entire life. This type of music would be a perfect fit...
Everything about this game is great, the difficulty, the art style, the music and the narrator. When this game is finished is is hands down going to be my GOTY
you are so gifted, Sir. everything about this game and its athmosphere is said in this soundtrack. I love how the instrumental mouvment is subtly replaced by something that looks like a voice at 2:20 , it feels like a female voice lamenting in loneliness and despair. Maybe the moniale in an abandoned cathedral, losing her faith, facing the abyss....? (sorry for my bad English and hats off from Baguette's land !)
The organs (or it sounds like organs) and general somber tone of this title them grabbed me immediately. Played against this backdrop it's fantastic. So many games and media try to capture Lovecraft these days. It can be hard to do it with music without being generic. This has variance, and it doesn't lay it on all at once. It's great.
Started the game!....watched the intro and then this comes up!....I was brought to tears!....Thank you man!....I see a bright future for this game and for the composer!
I love this theme. It conveys the theme of the game well. I feel like it's a diamond in the rough though. An extended version of the mid and end part, would make this piece even greater. Good job, love you work on the game. Wouldn't be the same without it.
One of the most beautiful scores of music in gaming that I've ever heard! The part that gets me every time is that transition at 1:18 when you first start up the game, I always wait at that little excerpt at the start of the game just to hear that build up! Hope you continue to make music for a long time Stuart, big fan!
waaahoou mais quelle ambiance de folie, des heures a rester sur la page de commencement du jeu pour ecouter le son,j'en oublie de jouer,du grand art en question d'ambiance, merci ^^
0:42 onwards and 1:28 is honestly some of the best videogame music I've ever heard. I heard it open on the latest 8/4 podcast and thought it was a movie OST for Interstellar.
Amazing, got goosebumps❤ love this. I know it's supposed to be for a dungeon, but i can see some.celestial being flying through the universe as different stars and planets are exploding, creating new solar systems, new life and at the very end, they've done their job and they burn up so to speak, but they aren't really gone, just gathering more energy to do it again later. Anyways, fantastic job🎉
Start of any game is the most exiting part for me, and looking back now I'm surprised at how simple start of Darkest Dungeon was. However I'd say its one of the best openings I've seen and soundtrack makes it so much better.
Your music fits so perfectly with the entire theme of the game. I'd say this game has music to match up there with the likes of Dark Souls. You truly made a great soundtrack, for the best go unnoticed yet immersive, but extremely rememberable.
You are amazing. The prince of persia soundtrack (especially warrior within) had a huge impact on how much i loved the game (one of the fondest memories of my early teens and one of my favourite games probably because of this) and on my music taste (thanks to it i found out the existence of metal, which was an epiphany). A few days ago i bought this game and after the already amazing intro cutscene i had chills as i heard the blast when you open the main menu. I come on youtube to listen to it and find out it was yours. I don't really know what more to say. Thank you for your work.
Reminds me a bit Matt Uelmen and his soundtracks on Torchlight and Diablo 1. Melancolic and mysterious... Fits very well with the universe of Darkest Dungeon. Well done! Can't wait to listen to your work on the Vampire expansion pack ;)
Yeah his 12-string guitar use is unique. Also his drums of hell... Your use of drums in this soundtrack is fantastic too! Will you work on the Darkest Dungeon expansion set ?
Go to 0:40 for the relaxing part that is played in the pre-title menu heads-up screen. I think it sounds super atmospheric. Almost magical. Great work, Stuart.
Just randomly put this on to play over Slay the Spire...Oh man, I loved Stuart Chatwood's Prince of Persia OST! Now I REALLY have to give this a listen!
Your OST is like some good wines Stuart : You deliver a good taste from the box like a Beaujolais but then you pass on something else and remember these OST exists ... And my god when that happen you get a big wave of nostalgia followed by very good and familiar vibes it bring almost to tears, just one of the best vintage bottle. Even if I don't have a huge playtime on Darkest Dungeon (there is not only the characters who are too stressed in my case... Maybe one day I will try the second game) compared to the good old Prince of Persia I love your work and you are easily in my top 3 favorite composer of all time, with Jesper Kydd and Gareth Coker. The future game you work with might not be my taste but your work, on the other hand, I will ear it with great interest 😉
You capture the themes of the game and the inspiration behind it really well. I got stressed out just by this track alone so thanks for that. Oh one more thing, you did a wonderful job and please tell me you'll be behind DD2 as well.
You will struggle. You will suffer. You will curse yourself. You will feel burning rage and fear. You will fall, and eventually...you'll face death. Whether defeat it or get defeated by it, it's up to you. But in the end........ It was damn worth it.
Darkest Dungeon soundtrack is a masterpiece. The only game music of this genre that is better is Matt Ulmen's Diablo 2 soundtrack. I listen to DD1 Hamlet music literally everyday. It is a mix of peace and horror, resignation and decadence.

Taylor Banks - Thanks for the amazing compliment! I hold those other soundtracks in very high regard. Thanks for your support.
Yeah this is amazing and think it has some Dark souls too it :)
Here comes the sequel!
silent hill 2's is probably better
1:18 is the sorrow, 2:09 is the horror.
Thanks for taking the time to listen to my music. Leave a comment if it's not too much trouble....
Thx you too !
Love it! You are a true musician of many talents. All the best and keep these gems coming!
Stuart, what software do you use to make this?
God your soundtrack is soooooo... awesome! I love it!
every time I start DD up I wait for this part before I start. 1:28.. So layered. Moving. Might be too good for a video game. but that's a good thing. Move video game music forward
the drop at 1:19 after all the build-up is a godsend. i'm not just saying this, but this is probably the best one-man OST I have ever heard.
I might have to pin this comment! Thanks for the feedback.
Especially if you read the blurb before the title drop, it’s just so perfect
1:18 is the sorrow, 2:09 is the horror.
That part of the song to this day brings me to tears and fills me with resolve. A nightmare awaits but I feel like I have the strength to face it.
"Heroes will die. Quests will fail or will be abandonned"
@Matriones: Or was it... We're getting another game, the madness isn't over yet.
@Matriones thanks buddy for spoilers -_-'
@Matriones spoilers are spoliers
lol who cares for spoilers when most of us will def not gonna get into the end of it
Deunel Me: *reads that*
“This is going to be a bad time, isn’t it.”
*it was indeed a bad time*
Eloquently captures the feeling of what starts as a quest to liberate your ancestral estate from eldritch horrors gradually becoming a descent into madness and despair.

Every time my party is wiped I think of this comment and then get back to work.
Thank you for writing these beautiful words in service of the Hamlet community. You are the hero that'll never die in the dungeon.
Someone’s gotta clean this mess up. And it’s something only the heir and his band of misfits are able to do it.
These nightmarish creatures can be felled, they can be beaten!
sn: I have always seen this track as conveying both the ruinous state of the Hamlet and the grandiose majesty hidden in plain sight, it's potential to be restored. Almost like what I imagine the Parthenon to be.
1:18 is when you finally and fully realise what it means that ruin has come to your family.
1:18 ALWAYS send shivers down my spine, this is soo good
I almost feel afflicted listening to it
1:18 perfectly captures the feeling of a grand cosmical revelation that no human mind is capaple of comprehending
"Victory... a hollow and ridiculous notion. We are born of this thing, made from it. And we will be returned to it, in time. The great family of man -- a profusion of errant flesh. Multiplying. 4 people lost their crusader and highwayman to the brigand bloodletter
Or they lost their ingame persona as their first death to something they're terrified of in real life.
While you were gone, your tavern was destroyed. :/
I lost my Dismas to bleed

Love all the turns in this one: to the tragic (around 0:40), the heroic (1:18), then back down into the darkness (2:08)... Fantastic.
Darkest Dungeon 2 hype!
All aboard the Hype Plane!
What hype 😂😂
Yes sir!
No
No need to hype tho
There can be no hope in this hell. No hope at all.
Halfing Paladin I think they changed the rng so now there is a little hope...
1:18 is the sorrow, 2:09 is the horror. Masterful soundtrack.
The swells at 1:19 and 1:54 are so good, no wonder why they brought it back for the teaser. Looking forward to the game, and the music.
We had to bring it back!
I love the light strings from 0:40 to 1:18. It's almost a combination of sorrow, pensiveness, and curiosity. It just gives this air of "What lies ahead? What have I gotten myself into? Truly, Red Hook struck gold with you. I can't imagine a Darkest Dungeon experience without your sonorous influence. Thank you for lending your talents to this series.
Thanks for the kind words. I am glad the music has been so well received. I'm very proud of this journey!
Man the music in Darkest Dungeon is so good, you prove again that music is such an important tool in games to convey feelings. Excellent music!

Gotta love that string crescendo at around 1:20 and 1:55, really gives it that "gazing into the maw of madness" feel
The lifeless trees and red skies coupled with the somber some tone of the music just creates this perfect scene of dread. Truly a masterpiece.
Top 10 themes of all time, literally has everything. And ive been playing games for 40 years.
Thanks for the kind words.
Absolutely perfect music for a perfect intro, the combined package of which tells you all you need to know about what a kind of trip into terror, ruin and bravery born of madness you're about to embark on.
Honestly the sting at 1:19 after all that build-up might be one of the most iconic moments in gaming for me.
I only picked up Darkest Dungeon a couple weeks ago. Your score instantly hooked me, the perfect combination of terror and triumph!
first time i heard this in game my jaw dropped, thank you Stuart for the best main theme ever
Check out the new theme to Darkest Dungeon II. I'm excited for the game to hit stores on May 8th, 2023.

Got to say, these scores for this game are PHENOMENAL! You should be super proud of your work
Everything in this game is glorious, and the soundtrack is no exception.
2:06, thrilling, the best part
I like it, the whole OST. Thank you for the music, Mr. Chatwood.
Start of any game is the most exiting part for me, and looking back now I'm surprised at how simple start of Darkest Dungeon was. However I'd say its one of the best openings I've seen and soundtrack makes it so much better.
Wonderful music that perfectly enhances the gameplay. Thank you, Sir.
Jesus this is gorgeous.

This is the best soundtrack I have ever seen
Your music fits so perfectly with the entire theme of the game. I'd say this game has music to match up there with the likes of Dark Souls. You truly made a great soundtrack, for the best go unnoticed yet immersive, but extremely rememberable.
You are amazing. The prince of persia soundtrack (especially warrior within) had a huge impact on how much i loved the game (one of the fondest memories of my early teens and one of my favourite games probably because of this) and on my music taste (thanks to it i found out the existence of metal, which was an epiphany).

One of the best, if not the best, soundtracks for video games in 2015. And I've listened to a lot. Every track is goosebumps material.
Dude, this song just gives off the overall vibe of Darkest Dungeons. Absolute master piece
this sends shivers down my spine to this day...

I’ve only recently started playing Darkest Dungeon, the soundtrack is so fitting it’s unbelievable, this piece in particular gives me shivers. Niceeee

Amazing tracks. Truly makes the game something special. Can't wait to see what else you create! *Subscribed*

You capture the themes of the game and the inspiration behind it really well. I got stressed out just by this track alone so thanks for that. Oh one more thing, you did a wonderful job and please tell me you'll be behind DD2 as well.
I am happy to report that I will also be working on the next Darkest Dungeon with Red Hook software.
