    I saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan on that Sunday night in Feb 1964. Our parents called us into the living room where they were watching TV. They yelled for us to come in quick and see this group that was playing. I kinda laughed at all of the screaming and didn't think much about it..... until my Dad brought home the album SOMETHING NEW.... that record changed my life...

    I was 7 years old when I saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show and my oldest brother suddenly was bringing Beatles record albums home and since then I've never stopped listening to the Beatles and all their influences of Black music that came before them and made me the musician I am today. Thank you BEATLES.

    This is the third time I watched this show - never tired of watching it. I was only 12 years old in 1964 when I first heard of the Beatles' music which I was truly captivated. Started collecting records, books and magazines about the Beatles, and in fact I bought from the Readers Digest in 1978 a collection of 12 albums released by the Beatles, and I still have that collection. For me, the Beatles as a band is the greatest of all time and their music will last indefinitely. I play any Beatles songs whenever my two granddaughters are in my car, so they will become aware of the Beatles phenomenon. Also ordered from Amazon the DVD of Ed Sullivan - the Feb 1964 show about the Beatles, which I played from time-to-time.

      The material in terms of films, documentaries, records, news paper articles and recorded interviews totals more than a few weeks back to back. Plus hundreds of books and so the output of material is colossal. Massive. Plus the volume is still growing. Maybe there is enough for a year with out repeats.

    It's a mirracle...still is, since then. They came at the right moment in time. The way Beatlemania set off, the way the girls reacted , all over the world, never seen before and we will never see that again, with that much intensity on that scale. What I find interesting, is how did they manage to change their music, in the beginning making hit-records singles, to the great concept studio-albums with all that ground breaking recording techniques.

    One of my older friends went to the show in 1964. It was a belated birthday present from his father, a C-level at an energy company who knew someone C-level at CBS. I have a DVD of the whole show, and right around his 60th birthday, I brought it to his home and showed him (and his wife) himself at 12. He was shocked. And he was surprised that you could pick him out at all from the masses of screaming and excited girls, but there he was.
    I wasn't born until The Beatles were privately breaking up, in July 1969, but they and their music has always been a major part of my life. There are a few artists that I don't remember a time where I didn't have some idea of who they were/are: Sinatra, Aretha, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Bowie... and the Beatles.

    This takes me back to the lunch time sessions on Saturdays in the Cavern again, being a kid, The Beatles where brilliant and lots of other bands also.
    John was always swearing in between songs and only played cover versions of American Artists mostly, from records being brought back to Liverpool, by lads who worked on the Cunard Cruise Liners between Liverpool & New York, we called them the Cunard Yanks, the records they brought back where in demand, for the bands to be the first to get to learn the songs and play them.
    To become the most covered band in history.
    I was down at the Pier Head in Liverpool today, where the Beatles statue is located and the number of kids, tourist at it, is beyond belief, the age of them taking pictures etc, 90% weren’t even born back in the 60’s.

    Paul McCartney said that a couple of factors shaped their development. First, when they were starting everybody was playing the same music. Theyd go to a job and the group before them was playing songs they had intended to play. So they said, wait a minute, we need to write our own songs. And so it went.
    People asked them- how did you write so many songs! Again, the record company said you have to produce two singles a year, and two LP's a year. So it was their job, they had to, to survive.
    So out of necessity things happened effecting their development.
    Of course they were immensely talented, that helped. And influenced from many sources.

    My Beatle Tribute Band "Area 1" was very fortunate to perform with Gordon Waller when he first visited Manila about 8 years ago. He liked it so much, the next time he visited Manila, he brought along Peter Asher with whom I had a pleasant chat during rehearsal breaks. The tandem Peter & Gordon produced some of the most memorable songs in my life, with the Beatle songs...Gordon gave me some cd out takes of their hit song "Woman" and you can hear Paul McCartney contributing his suggestions. It sounded like a great session. God bless you Peter & Gordon!

      Actually we still have only one original surviving Beatle and one reasonable facsimile. Many of us have been aware of that fact for decades and many are finally taking the time to learn the vast array of factual evidence that we now have available to us regarding the fact that Paul was replaced by Billy Shepherd in late '66. Billy is and has always been one hell of a musician, good enough to be one of The Beatles for more than 3 years and write some of their most iconic songs. But no matter how much we wish it was true and want him to be, he's still not Paul McCartney.

This was a really good panel discussion about the impact of that music on a lot of different people. I sure affected me as a musician and their music is still part of my playlist. I especially liked David who wrote Death Cab for Cutie. I went to high school with Death Cab's drummers father. Death Cab is one of the bands I respect as doing everything to make their sound and performances always sound the best. I think that's also what made the Beatles so great, they could play and sing and write and sound fantastic live. Live music is best...

    I was too young to remember The Beatles performances on the Ed Sullivan. I was only 3 1/2 ! I didn’t really get into the Beatles until 1968 when the Hey Jude came out. I actually recall The Monkees 1st in ‘66 due to the TV show, but I also recall a Beatles cartoon on Saturday morning!

    Paul was a driving force in the Beatles. He had so much to do with their creativity and evolution.
    A big factor in them being so creative was, they were so successful, they could have unlimited time in the studio. Not just pressured by time schedules.
    Relaxed, hanging out, experimenting. It was a fantastic opportunity. 👏
    Of course Marijuana and LSD like Hall said (!)

      No one ever wrote or played well in studio because of drugs. No one ever performed any task requiring great skill better under the influence.
      All that is a rock and roll myth, designed to encourage ordinary people to wish to try drugs. Which was one of the objectives of a vast swathe of rock & pop culture since the early 1960.
      We’ve been subject to steady and constant social engineering by people we trusted, who were puppets of hidden hands of the Tavistock institute.
      Never has society been more comprehensively separated from the beliefs and practices of the generation before them that the kids who grew up in the 1960s & 70s. I was among them, born 1960.
      Of course, we feel like we were the enlightened generation. In a way, we were. But while we still have affection for people and things that went before, we’re so unlike our parents. Bowie, for example, introduced us not so much to public homoerotica (he’s a straight man) as to androgyny. That was a big part of his appeal. That & not fitting in. He appealed widely to kids who didn’t fit in with anything. This flowed seamlessly into the raw energy of punk and on into the New Romantics.
      The social engineers repeated the trick in the kids that grew up in the 1980s & 90s, including my oldest daughter.
      I don’t think they’re anything like as separated from us as we were from our parents. I share a big slice of musical tastes with my children. Especially our oldest, who plunders the back catalogues going back before even when we were born, let alone when they were. Again, drug culture was increased still further in public acceptance and commonplace use. Oasis, for example, made ordinary the everyday use of drugs by the working class and Blur by the self-made middle classes.
      There’s been at least one additional cycle, picking up influences from the late 1980s that’s still with today. I’m told by my kids that, in bigger cities, weekend drug use is extraordinarily commonplace, particularly in those who are or were deeply into dance / race / trance / house & acid house culture.
      For a period, there was a time when wave upon wave of manufactured bands / artists where, almost for the first time, others wrote songs. I know this was always true of the Monkees, but never before was the was the sausages so clearly being made & consumed. Notice how commonplace was the breakup at or near their peak of popularity including with those we were never strongly caught up in the dance or other scenes.
      Note how often one of two of their former bandmates went completely off the rails with drunk, drugs and unhealthy promiscuity.
      The Tavistock is still there & engaged in their work and so are the former bands, some of whom were controllers more than passive subjects of manipulation.

    Just to say: “Yesterday” is a great song. If, as Peter Asher said, Paul was wondering if that very melody sounded familiar, it is because there was an old song “Yesterdays” that sounded, in part, a lot like “Yesterday”(singular). I am surprised no one has ever mentioned this. Paul’s father was born about 1900 and was a musician with a band. {"Yesterdays" is a 1933 song about nostalgia[1] composed by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Otto Harbach.}

    I didn't expect to like this when I first clicked. I'm so glad I took the time to watch...these are brilliant insights - particularly Peter Asher. My favorite comment was from John Oates when asked how they could be so brilliantly creative over such a short period of time - and he answered: "after they started smoking marijuana and taking LSD...and then they were given a recording studio to work in - ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"

    • @jonnydupe07
      @jonnydupe07 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      and change smoothly.

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was offended by that comment. John took a few swipes at the Beatles and fame in his interviews. The Beatles were already writing new and creative music from the get-go, and they didn't suddenly drop acid or even smoke weed and suddenly get brilliant. While you may not hear any relationship between Love Me Do and Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, when you listen to each album, you hear the seeds of the next album to come and the roots of the previous album. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds has more to do with John's Love of Lewis Carroll than LSD. Read some of John's pre-fame poetry and even his first two books- before he started smoking weed or taking acid- and you will find stylings which evolve into his later songs. The difference is, they knew they couldn't sing stuff life that in 1964, but by 1965 and 1966, they were able to do as they pleased. The Hard Day's Night album shows unique and intricate keys and progressions which they would expand on in later albums, before they smoked a joint. Yes, grass and acid affected them, but it did not write their music nor did they do anything while on it. They all freely admit they tried to write stuff while high or stoned and it all sucked. Sgt. Peppers owes just as much to their own open-mindedness toward musical influences and new art styles and George Martin as it did to grass or acid. This is the mistake lower talents and some fools fall into- that the Beatles were just acid and pot. Oates did acid and pot and what great songs did he write? A couple of 70's pop tunes with Darryl Hall, and H&O's fame in the 80s was all Hall- and none of their work is in the same galaxy as the Beatles.

    The MAGIC of The Beatles was that they transcended their songs. Most likely four other guys , could had written the same songs and "something would be missing" And "That something" I see when I watch the "Revolution" Video . I saw it with my 18 year old niece and she was "OH MY GOD THEY WERE SO CUTE" and I am thinking , NO they were just COOL. Paul is wearing a PINK top!" Three guys upfront with all the confidence in the world, style that REALLY made anyone before them look foolish (Elvis?) It didnt matter if they were all dressed the same , and bowed to the audience or on the roof top there was nothing that would tie them to a "look" . These were four kids with BALLS AND talent and THEY knew it and they were having fun with it. What are the chances of that perfect storm of those guys being born blocks from each other? That all of them were amazing actors in their film ? Why can the Stones NOT made a movie? Three of them 5' 11" tall ? And their famous cheekiness.. You must have the confidence that you were tapped by God himself (insert whatever the hell deity you want) The quiet Beatle stamped what would be their trademark "in your face": George Martin, thought their first takes were rough and unpromising, so Martin took the boys into the control room to listen to how they sounded - “‘And if there’s anything you don’t like, tell us,........'”And George was the one who took the leap, and he said, ‘Well, I don’t like your tie, for a start.'”
    DONE , cut the bullshit . Life as the world knew it had forever changed.

    When I hear people talk about the Beatles in appreciation of their later music as an introduction to them I can't help but believe that they missed the boat of what the Beatles truly are. It is the early so called Beatlemania stuff that first grabbed us and their later music that kept us. Maybe it is just me but I became a Beatles fan upon hearing the very first chord of "I wanna hold your hand" before that song even ended.

      - my first conscious memory, at 4yrs of age (the youngest of 5), all of us upstairs in the girls' bedroom, listening on the record player (the initial Columbia 45"); when I hear the song today (as I have, life-long ever since), I can still feel it as I felt it then, the visceralness of the guitars, and the excitement (exuberance!) of the song from beginning to end; and the flip-side as well, 'I Saw Her Standing There', almost as much! I'm still playing the guitar, and of the Beatles' tunes, those early ones have always been the most fun to play (and sing, for that matter).

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sometimes, this era of the Beatles is a victim of their own growth. People forgot that Rock and Roll was on life support before the Beatles arrive. The early Rockabilly groups and creative forces from Bill Haley, to Elvis, to Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent were either dead or indisposed. Payola had destroyed most of Rock and was replaced with the Frankie Avalon-Paul Anka- syrupy white bread crap. Only in cities like Liverpool and Hamburg was the real buzz kept alive and the Beatles were the right talents at the right places at the right time. I always laugh when people say "The Beatles did 'I want to Hold Your Hand' while The Who were doing 'My Generation.'" That is not remotely accurate. The Beatles had done Rubber Soul, Revolver, the Strawberry Fields single, and Sgt Peppers before The Who did "My Generation." Yet, when Please, Please Me, From Me to You, She Loves You, and I want to Hold Your Hand came out successively, it was a nuclear explosion in Rock Music. It was both old and new and NO ONE was doing anything like it- not the style, not the energy, not the beat, nor the guitar play. It may be seemingly more innocent compared to the world changes 12-18 months later, but it was just as drastic a change from 1962 to 1964 as from 1964 to 1966.

I have heard some musical historians call Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Bobby Rydell etc; "Establishment Rock" which came largely from Philadelphia. You're positively spot on. And while I embraced their entire musical evolution, the thing I find most amazing about their early period, is the fact it was just four lads knocking it out! Live or in the studio. None of the later studio gear (which helped them stay fresh and evolve) though again, nothing more difficult than four guys, with amazing songs, naked on the stage, and just nailing it. Can't beat the early era, and I dare say (where some songs are concerned) in their latter era (and given the times) it would have been nigh on impossible to play many of those songs live. Whereas they could play all the early stuff, and simply crush it.

    The Beatles knew they were the best small band in the world while they were in Germany! Meanwhile, early performances show that they often sang wrong words and even wrong lines because Lennon knew that he could write complete lines in minutes. The rooftop is special in that they miserable up there, especially Ringo, and John, to ease the tension, as the camera pans to Ringo, changes one word in "Don"t Let Me Down" from "Dug" to "Done" and Paul and Ringo start to laugh and the rest is history as the performance becomes a classic as Yoko becomes the playful "butt" of the joke, as clever John can't resist the opportunity for mischief!
