- Work is set to begin Monday on a $12 billion high-speed passenger rail line between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area, with officials projecting millions of ticket-buyers will be boarding trains by 2028.
KTLA 5's Chip Yost reports. (April 22, 2024)

Still waiting in the LA-SF train…..
Thank You!!
Never gonna happen now with how ded SF is.
Same. I'd move back to California if that train existed.
The reporter talks about the LA-SF bullet train at the 4:47 mark
Not going to happen in your lifetime. Why built through the central valley?
Having your car in Vegas isn’t a good thing. You have to park it, worry about it, and you’re on the hook for fuel and maintenance. I’d rather get dropped off in Nevada and walk or use Uber once I get there.
Nobody I know rents a car in Vegas anymore their entire stay unless they are staying off-strip. Just no reason to do so with the way nearly every hotel charges for parking. Add to that just a lot less stress just getting a ride share.
@@oldtwinsna8347 My hotel picks me up.
Uber costs $$$ just from airport to strip! Same o same when train arrives
That’s funny, people like me and others I know worry about parking our cars in California because all the smash & grabs. *Knock on wood* that’s not too much of an issue here in LV.
We need a federal ride share service to incentivize good drivers. Uber and Lyft can’t insure or protect their drivers. We need to cut out the middle man. 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Thank you Brightline.
Thank you Infrastructure Act from Biden too. Federal funds will be used as well.
@@tomlarson713 Now how exactly did the Infrastructure act help Brightline? Did it fund the company? If I remember, wasn’t Brightline already in the progress of developed plans. They do have one in Florida already. Didn’t Trump try to pass infrastructure too, but the Democrats wanted to play politics instead?
@@ArtTaggerr-223That bill funded 3 billion of the 12 billion total bill. Definitely helped push it forward no doubt
@@benkoch4973 Definitely bucks in Brightline’s pocket, but they would’ve developed it regardless of government infrastructure funding. Thinking like that would make me wonder…if the Democrats would’ve helped Trump pass an infrastructure bill then perhaps the railway would’ve already been completed by now! Instead we have to wait 4 extra years.
@ArtTaggerr-223 No, that wasn't clear. Brightline was asked by reporters if the project would still move forward if they had not gotten the federal funding and they wouldn't answer the question. BLW was originally going with pure private funding, but couldn't get it.
BTW, the public funding is closer to $5 billion.
You should be forced to buy a round trip ticket so if you loose all your money in Vegas at least you have a ticket back.
They need to connect this to the gold line.
😅
They are planning to do that... They will connect to the Metrolink at Rancho Cucamonga for commutes into L.A. etc.
It's connected to Metrolink, which you can transfer to Union Station
@@catwayroad9742 In a sane world they could use the same rails to get into Union Station like they do in Europe, but FRA regulation makes the tank-like American trains incompatible with the lightweight high speed trains.
The gold just makes traffic and tons of bums are in there
Amtrak used to go there on the Desert Wind and they toyed with the idea of having a Surfliner train go there. It is a shame that never happened
Amtrak sucks tho
I remember talking the Desert Wind from Union Station all the time, not sure why that stopped 🤔 it took about 7 hours to get to Vegas, still was nice 😊
You can blame freight rail companies for it.
@@bluebearaustinIt's not Amtrak. It's the freight railroad companies that own the tracks that limit passenger rail use.

@jakefield8018 - AMEN BRUTHA.. People hated on the Japanese Bullet Train project until it was done.. and suddenly, all the complaining vanished as people got on board.. literally.
This country doesn't need a billion dollar train so people can gamble away their money.
No, not everything has to take forever. It takes forever because the funds vet laundered 100x over before they quit on it altogether. Do you know how quickly our govt acts when they want anyrhing done? Check out the spending bill the lazy losers in congress passed on a Saturday (blasphemous for any elected official to work on a sat usually). This is the bs wr live with.
@@maidenthe80sla It's not designed to make a profit from ticket sales. The money they skim from the billions in federal grants is the reason it's being built. The CEO's of brightline are making close to 1 million a year in salary

It works as a starting point. Once you have a starting line, then you can build a network based upon it. Its basically how China built its enormous high-speed rail network.
@@yyan6501 that is not how China built its rail network. It starts from one major city to another major city or destination. I'm 100% certain this project will never finish despite it being only 210 miles.
@@diggingmystyle It is. China's entire high speed rail network started from the Wuhan Guangzhou line which is close to the length between LA and LV.

Oh that's right. It went $100 billion over budget and will never be completed. I wonder who's going to pocket the $12 billion from this project? 🤔
You know, follow the money.
There are legitimate concerns about a repeat of the whole LA-SAN fiasco to occur here but there’s loads to point that might not reoccur here.
Land is much, much more cheap between the areas of LA-LV in comparison. LV is well known for its giant flashy projects that incentivize tourism and there’s no doubt in my mind Las Vegas will slam anyone who gets in the way of this one. There’s finally the Olympics which would happen soon and I feel the government would help mediate the process in the case theres a slowdown to make sure they don’t look like clowns on the international stage.
As someone who lives in south Florida and saw how Brightline got it done, they will get it done out west too. It’s a nice train inside and out!
Ahh this so frustrating. The location of departure that is. LA will never pull any transit hub into its center.
Maybe decades later we will have high speed rail to this station.. decades
This train is a solution that doesn't work to a problem that doesn't exist.
@@zzygyy Yea, delaying it for the next 1,000 years.

At least it’s a start.
According to my calculations, the 200 mph train will average about 120 mph. Distance: 218 miles, time: 110 minutes. Must be a lot of curves and hills.
I love how she avoided the answer to the question about how much traffic disruption on the freeways there will be during construction
If I drive from Long Beach to Rancho ... I might as well just keep going to vegas, Why not bring it closer.. even el monte.. geez.. Reminds me of the train to LAX that didn't go all the way to LAX
So you get to enjoy the snail rail / shuttle bus.
It literally makes no sense to make it to El Monte or anywhere closer to the downtown LA. In a pipe dream or in Sim City sure...but imagine the additional permitting, zoning, environmental effects to build it through to the heart of LA with so many NIMBYs. The project wouldn't finish until 2060. I hope people like you and others continue driving to Vegas so that the highways remain congested.

Las Vegas had been a suburb of LA for decades. this is long, long overdue.
50 years late but good we got alternative ways to get to Vegas and vice versa. As long this gets done unlike the CHR, this is a major boost for both LA and LV
We need this for heavy and long distance commuter areas such as IE into LA, and Central Valley and central coast into the SF Bay Area.
Makes so much sense to do this where it is most likely to be used and probably pay for itself in the long run. Would be nice to be able to compare this with the LA to San Francisco line being built.
La to Fresno to SF.
San Francisco is losing businesses, Vegas is the hot spot where most travelers would want to go.
@@sbsk2526 that’s why they are now proposing the speed train from LA to Vegas. Smart move. Vegas isn’t just prospering from locals but also international tourism. Very smart move. It used to be that they were trying to connect LA to SF but I guess they are thinking what’s the point now. It’s only going to be a direct route for homeless to go from one place to the other.

Finally some good news, they should connect this to Ontario Airport.
This would ideally benefit both of these West Coast powerhouse metropolitan regions, but it seems like they’re cutting a very fine line with that 2028 deadline ambition.
I'll believe it when I see it.
My thoughts too!
They have built a line in Florida. They have the most important institution behind them... Wall Street.
FINALLY .. They are following the success of brightline in Florida instead of the model of failure that the California high speed rail is following.
Florida has flat lands … California is covered in mountains … ofc Florida train is gonna be more efficiently built and cheap … California was and is trying to build through many mountains and hills in the state
Idc how long it takes, this is my favorite construction project in the US rn. We have been falling behind other countries for a while now in trains/public transit, and once competition for brightline comes in it’ll lead to more affordable transit not just city to suburb or city to city, but also suburb to suburb in the far future.
*Awesome and about time!* I'm so excited for this! I'm an Angeleno (born and raised) and currently live in Europe. I use high-speed rail ALL. THE. We need a varied approach to rail service in a nation this large:
Acela is not really going anywhere near 150 miles an hour while having to use conventional rail tracks in the Northeast.
By contrast, a true bullet train-out in the west-where the cities are so far apart makes perfect sense.
They are updating and straightening out some sections of track on the NEC to improve the top speed to around 155 mph.
They need to focus on fixing the disaster we call Los Angeles first. This shouldn’t be the focus now spend the money on our highways, homeless, broken street roads etc
The tracks will be built in the median between two lanes of interstate highway! How will the construction equipment be transported across these interstate highways so the crews can do their work!
Traffic in both directions will be a nightmare!
For 4 years correct.
The same way they built out the gold line to San Gabriel.
This is a nothing burger they build off/on lanes for trucks and have signs about merging truck traffic. Yeah a bit of a pain but its been done all over the country when they widen highways and build new bridges so I think its just normal stuff. Some places might have under passes they can use and anyway the traffic during the work week is pretty light on the 15 more or less...
