Wouldn't it be nice if they could add a chord from the 'Nets' to go straight up to either '50 steps' bridge and maybe onto an exchange platform to link with the Nottingham transport heritage centre as then that way, when the Loughborough missing link is finally completed you could take the whole trip from Nottingham city centre to Leicester, with maybe a small diversion if you wanted to of course to the heritage centre? Plus if they added a curve from the heritage centre aiming towards Loughborough, no more reversals required!! Joined up transport planning thinking or what??
The long term plan is to extend the GCR through the station site to an interchange station with the trams, so doubt the original Ruddington island platform will see use again, which is a shame.
Suggestion to the mentally challenged deranged town 'planners' uniquely devoid of any intelligent forethought. If a railways is ripped up and buildings removed at least leave the cuttings and routs clear so that at some point, if needs be, the track can be relayed and some point in the future. Building one or two houses and grounds across the old route makes it almost impossible for the whole route of miles ever being reopened again. Maybe Dr beechings ghost still wanders around 'planners' offices not satisfied with the vandalism he carried out years ok and now seeks out railway routes he can get a house or two built on to put paid to any track ever being re-laid. Permanently.
I'm late to the party but you will find the professionally educated town planners left a path for any extension to the tram system or the heritage railway so they can be linked at some point. Why else would the bridge have been strengthened?
This really makes me cross. I can't understand why the station site land was not purchased and a new Ruddington built exactly as the original. It would have made a brilliant northern terminus when the new GC is reborn when the gap is built. I felt a similar anger when Leicester North station was built instead of rebuilding Belgrave and Birstall as it was. I thought heritage railways were supposed to preserve ?.
Belgrave station went into such a state of disrepair that it had to be completely torn down. As well as that, how would they implement a passing loop into belgrave? The track down there is only single track so a double platform makes no sense. The land it was build on continued further but nowadays there is only little space left so Leicester north seamed like a more fitting track plane for the space great central were given.
For example quorn, which is very close looking to belgrave station so but quorn also has double track but up to Leicester north it has no twin track so why build a double platform if only one side can be used. 🙂
@@alexking506 This is typical of no idea councils, they preach about leaving cars at home but just put red tape in the way of anything that could be useful, is there any obstructions north of the old station to where the Nottingham tram system starts?.
Totally agree, But the short sighted nobs of the sixties and seventies lacked forward vision, only tunnel vision to cast away what they saw as not of being of any worth to the future district plan. Bad move indeed.
@@begudmaximan953 I wouldnt have been as polite as to call them nobs. The damage they did to towns and cities, railways and infrastructure all across the country in the 60s and 70s is almost incomprehensible.
It's a good video. I can't imagine why you don't like it. As for the subject matter I disagree with most posters. The demolition of the GCR was a good thing and got rid of a white elephant line with no passengers
The image transitions were too short, I didn't get a chance appreciate the slide show.
You and me both! Ludicrous!

All in the name of progress to quote the late great Fred Dibnah
Not sure why the slides are turning rapidly!
Great work brother

Sad to see the heritage condition atleast it should be preserved.
Devolution
How come Ruddington had that extra building on the platform compared with other GCR London Extension island platforms?
i understand it was hardley used or needed? . use it or lose it
Scenes changed too fast 💨 spoilt what would have been a great video
The biggest mistake in railway history ...RIP GCR?
What a pity this video is so rushed, almost to a point whereby it’s unwatchable!
Don't watch it then ! .no one is forcing you to . It's fast paced so it's not boring. Move along
