- Graphene and hydrofoils gives optimist dinghy superpowers
Students and researchers at Chalmers University of Technology and SSPA Sweden has designed and developed an optimist dinghy with supreme capabilities. By using a composite with added graphene the hull is made stronger and lighter. Hydrofoils are added to lift the boat, decreasing drag and allowing greater speeds. After experimenting and testing in SSPA:s ship research and development facility in Gothenburg, Sweden, the dinghy is ready to be tried out at sea for the first time. @axelrahmsailing will do the honors.
This feels like one of those "if you can think of it, someone has done it" moments. Also, this is the sailing skiff version of a sleeper - make one that looks entirely stock above the water line, challenge someone in a Laser to a race, ruin their day.
I don't know but it seems like it was still fairly slow - fastest I've seen a laser was 18 knots

My club uses Optimists as ice bucket fridges at end of season. Now people dont have to bend down for a drink, nice

Do you think these are class legal ? I think you'd be the fastest ten year old around
40 years ago I entered a race for Optimist hulls with unlimited sail area, but we didn't try foils, suitable material wasn't available. So I really enjoy seeing this working, in moderate winds.
i race in sunfish and if there were 50 flying bathtubs i would be shiting my self
The lack of a rocket engine is a major oversight, disappointed it didn't achieve low Earth orbit. Otherwise, jolly impressive. Cheerio!

Your grandchildren would have a hard time learning to sail in that. I learned in an optimist and they can plane in enough wind, but on foils it isn't sailing, its flying.
Amazing that such a small sail can get it up on the foils. Balance looks challenging.
Windsurfers foil quite easily, its the size of the wing, the smaller the wing the faster needed to get up, but the higher top speed, bigger wing is lower top speed but barely any speed to get up
@@pureprotein9597 windsurfs are way faster than optimists though. I’m absolutely amazed they could get on the foil with only 5 kts with such a small sail, considering it’s very challenging even on a windfoil

Glad to see this has been done, the next boat I am building is a Mirror Dingy style sailing boat with a foil for flying.
I wondered about foiling in a Mirror. First boat I ever sailed. Not super-fast but fun when I was 12. Sailed a Laser next. They were alright in light winds but could be impossible when it blew up a bit.

This is great.
People keep asking why do this to a 50 plus year old desighn. The point is to test and learn about foiling as a common sailing practice going forward. The opti is the most common sailboat on the planet so it is a great hull to prove the concept. Stock hull stock rig. Amazing results from the foil.

I wanna see what the foils look like!
It needs an aileron like the foiling catamaran i-fly has, wich always tries to correct the hull to a horizontal position when on foils automatically. Then it is easy for younger children to learn how to foil sail with these flying optimists.

I once tied the bridle of an 8m^2 ram parafoil kite onto the top and bottom of the mast of my opi. went out in 26 knots wind. from head to wind while letting the kite inflate to bareing away to broad reach I could get planning in 4 seconds. GPS said max speed 16.2 knots boat speed.

One thing I don't get about these foiling sailboats is it looks like the wind could blow it over when they're foiling, but even in good wind, it appears they aren't heeling much.
Yep, and now, we have the "Americas Cup Boats" doing almost the same thing here on the last day of 2020 in Auckland doing 50knots in very light winds, It's most probably "Thank You Sweden"
We have an Opti at home. When Chalmers develops a kit to fit an existing hull, we'll buy one!

I think this is amazing, isn't it?
I spent many years in my youth racing these boats, up to the point where I weighed 100lbs making me non-competitive against the younger 70 lb. racers. It would take a very stiff breeze to allow this to happen. You should take note that if these boats when tipped fill with water, it is all over till the tow boat comes. My dad, who built our boats would have been all over this if it had been thought of back in the 60s!

That would be the ride height wand. Same system as a foiling Moth. It senses the water surface and adjusts the main foil trim accordingly to optimise lift and ride height above the water to take some workload off the sailor.
Imagine this pulls up on the start line and just shoots off, peak embarrasment

Great student project. I would also like to know if the hull is class legal. What does the boat weigh? It appears 5m/s down wind is near the lower bound for foiling. Is it possible to foil up wind in some higher wind speed?
The obvious next step would be a larger more modern rig. The Clarks rig for the UFO is excellent for the price.

Obviously the foils aren't class-legal, but even if you removed them I'll bet the boat isn't class-legal. I'll bet it is way, way underweight.
The minimum class-legal hull weight is 77 lb (35 kg). I'll bet this one is a lot less. (I don't know what the minimum class-level rigged weight is.)
Remember that the best foil is actual as close to the water as possible without touching. Being able to control blade height is key.
