- Discord just banned over 8 million accounts! and it's going to achieve nothing.
Every single quarter of the year, Discord will release their "transparency" report. The quotes are there because this transparency report, as you will see, is not really transparent. In this report, Discord goes over how many accounts they warn and ban, each being divided amongst different categories. Discord also highlights the trends of bans, warnings, appeals, and number of legal documents processed between each quarter.
Basically the report turns into a bunch of data that is wrapped up in business speak while Discord toots their own horn about how awesome they are...

Getting warned for just being part of a server seems very unfair in many cases. Especially because false reporting a server could turn into false reporting 10,000 people. Even worse is if it happens in some thread or forum post you don't know about.

Not all 100k+ users live in the us. So why report a user from europe for child safety to an US authority?
There is no requirement that anyone be a US citizen to report a crime to the FBI. If you suspect it falls under US jurisdiction, go ahead and report it. If it's out of their jurisdiction, they can pass the evidence along to their counterparts in the country with jurisdiction.
Cchild saftey is such a vague term because i have no idea if your defending kids being on discord or Cheese Pizza
Because discord is a US company and technically all their data and services is under US jurisdiction unless they create a division in another part of the world. If you do something in Europe that is illegal in the US on a US hosted service then US law enforcement can pursue it if they want

A lot of the child safety bans might be for drawings, which government agencies have to constantly tell online services NOT to report.
Sad that the problem of real 'trading' discords go unsolved too.
The vast majority of the time; the drawings are gone after instead of the people spreading actual CP.
What's even worse is that their statistics don't differentiate those banned for actual CP and those banned for drawings. That is an important data point.
i reported some dude and an entire server for those activities over 6 months ago and discord still hasnt gotten back to me, and last time i did it, discord support didn't get rid of the server for FOUR WHOLE MONTHS
@@Sandst When it comes to drawings, it's a waste of time. They'll just hop on over to Matrix.
My last account got banned twice, almost exactly a year apart.
Last year I got banned seconds after joining a server. The support actually admitted that it was a false-positive and unbanned it.
I've "learned my lesson" and stopped joining servers or opening DMs with people I don't know, yet I got banned again anyway. This time, however, it happened while I was offline for several days.
The ticket was ignored for over a month, after which they replied that it's already deleted and they can't do anything.
I don't know how to use that platform anymore. For the last couple of years their anti-spam systems have been on a hair-trigger, while the support seems to get only worse and worse. Even while _trying_ to appear as normal as possible to the spam-system and avoiding any and all NSFW content like the plague I still get banned for some generic "violation of the ToS". They can't even be bothered to clarify what it is I do to get banned.
To be fair, addressing the law enforcement part - It isn't really LEAs being "lazy" per say, usually the contrary. Unfortunately, it just isn't feasible for LEAs like JJDP, FBI, or the Department of Justice to crack down on all the cases of crimes against children that occur on Discord, or on the internet in general. Local Law Enforcement can't really do much either, as most reports are either poorly documented, or lack information/evidence.
In other words, if an account is flagged, and banned by Discord - and even reported to the appropriate authorities (JJDP, FBI, DOJ), if they're outside the U.S, or even sometimes in the U.S, you basically have to hope local law enforcement can use the information given to make an arrest, or take the initiative investigate themselves, because chances are the major LEAs don't have the resources to crack down on every single instance that occurs online, or every account reported for this stuff.
Just some insight.
Yeah that point bother me too, "they are lazy" like ok dude i know the autorities can not give a f sometimes but even with no insights, you realize that it can be complicated for the authorities
My friend was recently banned from Discord for "violating Discord TOS" when he actually did not. He even asked at support about the reason, and guess what? He was replied by a bot. Not once, not twice. But 6 times in a row. And when he wanted to contact Discord moderation via Twitter, he was ignored! Good job, Discord, keep up good work!
This happened to me 2 years ago
It sucks because they literally don’t look at them
They just autogenerate the damn response
just like the developers on google play store! they literally write an auto response for specific keywords and then type out something in the least grammar possible and not actually fix the problems with the apps! you could say "this app killed my phone" and then the reply will be something like "oh sorry! we will also always in the never win lose thing improve this app! will fix now not! "
The way people get warned about child safety is something i heard from a discord admin: if a big server knowingly doesn't ban underage users it could get deleted and i suppose the mods get warnings

If your point of contact is only T&S department, you're already very likely to be ghosted, either by ungodly slow acknowledgement or marking your ticket solved without explanation. Make a General Account ticket and they'll actually listen to you. For anything unrelated to age, your appeal must contain clear wording that you "read the TOS and guidelines before submitting the appeal", and you should hopefully be doing that anyway
Funny story, I mainly use my account to talk to friends “privately,” and it got my account disabled.
I don’t know if it was because I’ve been getting bombarded (no pun intended) with war in the Middle East news and I might’ve said something regarding nukes and that entire place to achieve peace for once to a friend who knows it’s clearly a joke, or because I was sending explicit reference pictures to another one to help with his nude artwork but both said they didn't report me.
Either way, I appealed since I didn’t even get an email or a warning about it, and I don’t think either fit as breaking TOS or guidelines. They said they would not reinstate my account because I violated one of the two.

I know a lot of you all here may not like what I have to say but this is rather important, and I think we should know about it. Minors/teens online are NOT innocent, just because they are not "adults" that does not automatically mean they are divine saints who could do no wrong, I have seen a lot of teens online do some really disgusting stuffs and also wrongly frame people and get away with it because of their age, (I've seen it happen), I have also come across online communities of teens that hate on adults and literally target and harass adults online, some of them even go as far to dox those adults although those adults did nothing but mind their own business and did not even interact with them in any way. So yeah, be careful, just bc someone is a teen online that does not automatically mean they're a safe person to be with online.

Yep, there is nothing wrong with making fun of the Bad Germans from 20th century.
My account was randomly disabled a few months back and I got NO warning whatsoever. Messaged them about it, said I violated TOS. Which I absolutely did not. I even went back through the TOS and conduct and there wasn't a single thing I could think of that came close. I did manage to appeal and get it back after two weeks of worry, but I'm STILL unsure of what happened. I did provide proof of my age and the only thing I can think of?... I'm a little person. Like, I'm 31 but just over 3 feet tall. Was talking to a lady friend and... I think they thought I was not of age somehow. Won't go into specifics... But still was never told why exactly they disabled my account. And I'm kinda terrified I may randomly lose my account for not doing anything at all... Me being a disabled little person should not put me in danger of my account being disabled because they automate EVERYTHING and it false flags me as a kid.
The warnings are for cases where they lock your account and ask for your ID before banning you, as they are not sure about your age.
Most people don't feel comfortable with posting their ID on public servers everyone can access and make new account instead, so it makes sense.
Honestly just ignore Discord moderation and don't get too attached to your account, random bans are a thing.

I think it's sad how bad the appeal system is. Most people that actually violate TOS are probably not appealing bans because they know what they did wrong and they don't care about the accounts. I lost over 5 years of messages and discord didn't even talk to me, only the template response that the ban is justified and I should look into the mail.
I've also been banned for no reason. I have a clear conscience and I'm sure I didn't break any of the rules. I paid for a yearly subscription every year and this is how I get stabbed in the back by discord.
You'll almost certainly get denied and ghosted by T&S, it's still not the end of the world when it happens. I'd say, make a second appeal where you clearly state that you have read the TOS and guidelines before submitting, and if ghosted, make a "General Question" ticket and refer to the fact you already made a ticket and need help, a human-ish response is almost guaranteed. This worked for me, and other people who tried the same thing
if possible, do a charge back. If htey are going to ban you, and steal that, rescind your money from them.

I used to have a OG Account created on the Day Discord went live, i was an early adopter and really hyped back then
After 4 years I got banned out of the blue because a Server i was on get deleted for "Piracy"
The server was a sort of Technical support, but they had hidden channels that were used for Tech support on pirated games.
Welp never participated in that but still got permanently banned, had to get a new Phone number because that one was linked to my OG account.
Since then i'm really hoping for an alternative platform to succeed
Funfact, you can create discord accounts without email or phone number, once you create it, if you leave the browser tab connected with the account you will be forced to verify with phone or email. If you dont verify, the account will keep existing or keep being member of servers you joined with it. It is very limited cause big servers have good security
If only the false bans were actually appealable. There is even a ToS point that says that you cannot create a second account if the first one is banned. So what? Should the user just remove Discord and never return to it again? Especially due to a false ban?
Yes. If you get banned from Discord, or any other service, false or otherwise, it means you can't use that service again. Ever.
2:16 I remember the vid you made about how broken discord support is, and its true, people can falsely report your message, you can be a content creator, and because of a single message, your account is suddenly gone, just because of an individual that decided to end your discord account.
I had an account I used daily from 2016 and it got banned around 2021, I know by now I'm not getting it back but the only reason I can fathom that it did get banned was due to me adding multiple people in a day, I didn't get a warn or know adding too many people in a day would get me an insta banned. so assuming it happened to me when I did legitimately nothing wrong except adding people I'd assume a few of those bans are false bans too for "spam" even if they aren't really spam.
My friend once joined a server with an NSFW meme channel that was filled to the brim with child corn. The server had been up for a while, and I believe it’s still up after being reported. Thanks, Discord!
I got a warning and it said I sent a bad file to someone or a server and I'm like "I don't send files often and when I do I'm normally just being tech support to my not so smart friends" what I hate about their so called warning system is THERES NO SCREEN SHOT OR ANYTHING it like "hey ya did something we don't like here's a hint on what you did wrong but we refuse to tell you exactly what you did with a screenshot to farther assist you not doing this action."
Sorry for the anger here but holy shit their flag system is bad
I remember my legacy account getting disabled because of a nsfw server, and I wasn't alone, many people fell from a trap like me, quit ignorant people like me. After I receive a ban from that discord server, and my account as well soon got disabled by discord without any reason sent to my email, and after requesting 2 account appeals they just gave me an email that is an automated text reply ending with the phrase "we will not reinstate the account", at that moment I felt helpless and that I can't do anything, at the same time, was able to learn the hard way, that I should really be careful about who I help, who I talk to, what I talk to, the only reason I felt somewhat of a great loss, and yes I can simple make a new account (which I already did backed my servers, archived my chats etc) is because that that account was way back in 2018, and that its the only discord account with that username and such.
i was a part of that 199 that appealed and got it accepted, wow im so happy
I've been on discord since 2016 and never received a warning, it makes me wonder if I just get lucky with people not reporting me
Same for me, but my only involvement is in small private groups or about specific video games, so it's not a big footprint. I don't like the idea that some bad actors in some Hearts of Iron 4 mod forum could go unhinged on political ideology stuff in a channel I don't even look at and take me down with them though.
I used to be a moderator on a NSFW server. I've reported countless accounts for seeking/sharing minors. I usually saved the account ID to refer back to see if the report was actioned. In my entire time moderating, not a single account I reported was disabled. I ended up giving up moderating NSFW servers. It was affecting my mental health with the shit I would see.
holy shit, discord's been cooking for too long now

I got banned for being in a (semi legal) drug server my friend sent me, that i had thrown in a folder and forgotten about. After sending in a ticket pointing out how i had never once typed in the server, i got my account back. Guess i was lucky but the discord support seemed pretty reasonable
Edit: something i see other commenters complaining about is never getting past the bot messaging system. If you keep emailing the bot until you actually get a human being, you have a much higher chance of getting your account back.
The bot told me there was nothing they could do but after a couple emails back and forth i got a human being that not only told me which server i had been banned for, but also let me go when i told them to check and see that i had never messaged or participated in that server.

There are (or were) no warnings with CSAM. Unless things have changed in the last four years (which it probably has given its growing userbase in the wake of Covid) or it's just the enforcement agencies in my general area, anything flagged by the system goes straight to the NCMEC. it’s not just discord, many platforms just seem to get worse and worse by making decisions no one wanted
Often it doesn't matter what users want. It's required by law, regulation, or contract, so they have to do it.
These services don't want to ban users or create new rules because it's just more money they have to spend which cuts into profits. Changes like this are driven by government regulation and lawsuits which quickly become more expensive than creating and enforcing rules.
Every timee Discord updates:
*Get ready everybody, they're about to do something stupid!*
The big problem with discord giving warnings to server members is the fact that servers frequently have hidden text channels that you don't have permission for and people that you have no association with sharing content that you don't know about in streams and audio chat. What happens when you join a community with thousands of members or more and one guy goes in a members only text channel and sends spam or goes in a stream to insult kids who lied about their age, you'd get warned despite having no association with what happened or even knowing what server it was in. I'm lucky enough to still have my original account from 2015 but I've been warned for being in servers where other server members got banned for DM spam that didn't even take place in the server. With all the modern AI tools, it's pretty stupid that they can't train it to only warn or ban people who were actually involved with breaking TOS
Congratulations everyone, but let's try to get those numbers up next year!
The child safety warnings are probably for lolis. It's banned from Discord, but they probably don't consider it to be direct harm or an immanent threat, due it being a drawing, and not actual CSAM.
It would be a waste of time as well since they are preoccupied with someone who just draw stuff than the actual problem. A lot of people post anime stuff every day. One or two gonna get trigger unexpectly.
the reason law enforcement doesnt deal with it is capacity, they have like 20 agents for 5000 offenders, so they wait until one of those offenders crosses some arbitray line, then raid them. kinda like shop lifters getting ignored until they acumulate enough theft for real consequences, but in this case even one offence is real consequenses, theres just too many of them to stop, like the war on pot
i had my old discord hacked and even after sending a report to discord and them saying they can't give it back as it's been banned now it's still around all the hacker had to do what change the name and i guess email and that's it like bruh how does discord bans work so badly you don't even need to make a new account to ban evade
Another thing to note about child safety is that Discord likey puts things like art of the Japanese variety into the same category.
As much as most rightfully find it disturbing, equating that kinda art to the real thing is both disingenuous and wastes resources on catching actual predators.
Dude, loli/shota stuff should be banned off the face of the earth. It isn’t art
It is 100% against the rules to post NSFW fictional stuff, though it's not considered CSAM under US law (may be illegal under obscenity laws depending on your state, though those are dubiously constitutional for other reasons) where Discord is hosted. That may account for some of the child safety warnings, though I can't say for certain since I'm a good noodle who has never gotten so much as a warning from Discord staff. Banned by power tripping mods, sure, but Discord staff have never had a problem with me.

"Sewage water is genuinely more transparent than [Discord's transparency report]"
I got completely banned in August with no reason other than vague "cyberbullying" or something of the sort. I am over 13 and I've never promoted violent extremism or "the other thing," so it was kinda weird to me. Weirder still was the absolute nothing answer from support. Nothing that couldn't be solved with a new email though
I get if they want to ban or "disable" people or servers for nude ai celebrities but they should give warning. I got disabled when a server got nuked and there was no warning, and this was before they had the exploitive content rule in their guidelines.
i said im 9 years old
i was joking
But
my account was disabled and banned 2 days after they emailed me
wtf atleast give me a chance to explain that im not 9 years old

The server got deleted by discord, and me and several others were full on disabled, and others were banned temporarily or got a warning
I hope that new feature where you can see live updates of any reports sent rolls out well at least
Let's watch as Discord does the unthinkable and puts that behind a Discord Nitro subscription.
Seriously... Discord is not getting any better...
it's probably also worth noting that the 4 letter L word for drawings also get accounts banned, and that discord probably doesn't bother reporting that to authorities a lot of the time, particularly if the material isn't actually illegal within their region.
afaik the feds actually avoid interacting with the drawn variety of child crimes, id assume its cause its pointless to go after that random anime character when a real child could be hurt somewhere else (i mean all they do is watch still but, they can FEEL better abt it smh)
Yo star pfp
not to mention in the states it's probably more than likely going to be a huge legal battle that only really has a 50/50 chance of being actually considered CSAM. Beaurecratic headache. Police can't even be fucked to go after actual CSAM because of the paperwork, so yeah, they dont bother. Legally grey anyways; even social media hardly ever removes it.
That's because the vast majority of regions the 4 letter word for drawings isn't banned in most parts of the world. I remember the last guy that complained about the 4 letter drawings the said guy got reported for him uploading links to the hentai dropout (dropout is where the characters are under the age of 18 btw) if you try to report people who upload 4 letter word with L they will hunt down and find something of yours they can report on mass.
@@when-do-we-get-a-block-buttonThe drawings aren't actually illegal in the USA. Also; the feds and the American government are smuggling children across the border, I highly doubt the old man with an island had only celebs on his island.
sometimes when i watch your videos, i have a little mouse-on-mouse battle and see what crazy curveballs and dodges your mouse does.

I know someone who got his account deleted for saying a kid to study (yes, the Discord report system is OP, live Roblox VC report system)
The best way to use discord is to not use it
I think the fact of the matter is the authorities don't want to incarcerate *that* many people from the internet at a time due to jailhouse capacity issues. That and they don't want to falsely arrest anyone that was framed for cp. So mostly it's to not potentially expend resources wastefully and to avoid public backlash if they were wrong.
Considering Chris Chan was released from prison; I doubt it's that.
I had a server warning for “vigilante behaviour” when I was in a server that would mass report Cheese Pizza servers
Man, I was not expecting to see Rena in that context

I have been using Discord for 8 years and I have never been warned until this year because I joined my some friend's server and it got removed. He is no longer my friend.
Anyways avatar effects and decorations are cool so cool they have a special no refund policy for them 😅
I recently got scammed by a server owner who sells services like spotify/nitro on their server.

Why do people use Discord if they keep complaining how bad it is? There is plenty of alternatives like Matrix.
Same reason why they use stuff like Twitter and TH-cam, because they have much more content and many creators only use the most popular platforms
Discord is really out here acting like under-13 users are the biggest threat to the platform 💀
That's because it is. They cannot let even _one_ child through the cracks, because if a child is exposed to potentially objectionable content and the parents can afford to file a lawsuit, it could result in the government smashing _ALL of Discord_ with the Ban Hammer.
I'm not surprised, this many bans, I was banned for absolutely nothing, and they didn't even reply to my ticket
discord: "meh, just ban millions of accounts and we'll seem like good guys."
I am scared that Discord might just make everything worse.
Petty thing to be scared of lmao
i got banned on 3 accounts in the past 1 month. 1 for "malicious hacking" (which i didn't do, i only did gamehacking but didn't actually sell it or give it to anyone), and one for saying i was 7 on a server (i kinda expected that, but since i was already on my alt cuz my main got banned already i really didn't care). third one? 30 minutes after getting the second one banned, the 3rd one got also banned for the same reason. didn't receive a warning for none
happens i guess
I wonder if MEE6 got any warnings...
I lost my account of over 4 years due to being a tad bit underage. I had so many memories and so many messages on it, but discord hates that. I literally just used it to talk to my friends and people with the same hobby as me. Discord is awful.
damn, must suck
6:43 I actually appealed for getting falsely banned for saying I'm underage as a joke and they actually unbanned my account so please waste ur time trying to get ur account back, and then making a new account its the last thing to think about.
I've had a discord account since I was 10 and Ive always told people at that time I was 10, never got banned(I did lose the account tho, just forgot the pass) I also always talked to people my age someone I know literally JUST turned 13(in September) and another is 10, discord's child safety does not work. Also while I was 10 I got my ip stolen idk what happened to that person cuz i just blocked them(really scary as a child) and there are even groups that go out to steal peoples ips(idk what their group names are but at that time there was a famous scammer group i also dont know if theyre still around but considering this is online they probably are.) Even some people I know steals peoples ips for fun, the only people ive seen them steal from is people that are comfortable enough to sent their addresses to them (tho they did send it to me and im not even close to them) but still, nothing happening with that
I used to make game mods and i randomly got two warnings for sending malicious links wayyyy after within a span of a week or two, and not even cheats
I liked my own comment
