We are officially back from the United States! This week, we visited Clingendael Park between Wassenaar and Den Haag to view the gorgeous autumn scenery. We also wanted to take an opportunity to discuss five things we missed about The Netherlands while we were abroad, and a few things we didn't miss (Dutch stairs, anyone?)
Stay tuned for our vlogs over the next few weeks- we have some super fun content headed your way!

Guys, you had some fair point here to talk about. One thing though; It is impossible to compare the Netherlands to the USA landscape wise spoken. If you must compare, then at least compare the USA with the EU. Since The USA is a union of states and the EU also is a union of states. so the USA vs the USE (maybe in the future ;-). In the EU you will find spacious counties, densely populated countries, mountain countries, coastal counties, you name it. So take the train to Austria this X-mas and go visit Tirol, then tell us about what you've seen there! Do not go there at the 5th or 6th December because you probably will run into Sinterklaas in Austria as well (Nicolaus Österreich Krampus) with his friend Krampus. Look it up at TH-cam! Now that's something else as Zwarte Piet right?

You only see those stairs in old houses from about 100 years ago, usually in cities. Newer houses have regular stairs.

There are hills in the Netherlands.. just not in the Randstad where you are. But go more east or south-east and the hills will come. There is the Utrecht hill ridge which is wonderfull, and Arnhem is built against a hill. And just go to Maastricht or Heerlen in the south... Or Valkenburg (Limburg) if you want something more touristy...
The steep Dutch stairs tie in with the lack of space. I mean less steep stairs mean less room for other things in your house so.. There is that ;)

  • @jsb7975
    @jsb7975 ปีที่แล้ว +14

The greener the areas the more space between houses outside historic towns.
    Friesland and Drenthe
are quite spacious compared to holland and Brabant.
The land between the rivers Maas and Waal is
just amazing, riding or driving on the dikes (which are ages old as well)
The feeling of space in that area is breathtaking
and people from all over Europe (not overwhelmingly many)
come there to paint and feel the air and space....

And this is why you guys have the word trap in your language, since stairs as you may call them in Dutch is: Trap !
So we take the trap (stairs) to go to the next level in the house. Since this country is a densely populated country, especially in the bigger cities we have a structural shortage of space. So we (used to) make everything as small and narrow as possible and that also goes for the trap (stairs). By the way, have you ever been in a original old toilet in a seriously old house ? Try it ;-)
So the trap (stairs) we make 'em as steep and as narrow as possible, so the stairs does not take in to much space in the very little (narrow) houses as they were build in the day.
Everything really was in the houses, but again, as small as possible. The people in the day were not as tall as we are now and poverty was a thing back then, just like big families in these tiny houses. You barely had something to eat, so there were not that many BIG people and so being hungry all the time and living unhealthy made not to tall and very slim people, so nothing really had to be BIG, since people weren't BIG to begin with. So looking at it now from a 21st century view these dangerously steep, and narrow stairs were a trap to us all.

Yeah, mountains, we like them as well but we don’t really have those. There are beautiful hills in Limburg and just across the border the Ardennes and Eifel mountains in Belgium, Germany and Luxemburg. and there’s the Harz in northern Germany (south of Hannover) with all those medieval unesco towns that you would probably like. All not that far away. And reachable by public transport. (Though speaking a little bit of French or German might make it easier to get around there)

I also have steep stairs in my house that resemble a cork screw, fallen down them and broken some toes. I have since painted the stairs with special non-slippery paint for stairs. I don’t slip anymore! You can also buy special carpet pieces for stairs.

Space is relative. My cousin spent about 10 years living in New York City. Her apartment was tiny, but it cost her over 2000 dollar per month, she even said that was cheap for New York. Now she lives in midtown San Diego, her house is twice as big as in New York but still less then half of my regular Dutch tussenwoning! Her rent is $2400. According to her, housing in cities especially on both coasts are much smaller and expensive then in places in the middle of the USA. Originally she’s from Mississippi where prices are low and homes are large.

Yeah, Dutch stairs are notorious steep. Dutch stairs are sometimes no more than luxury ladders, especially in old houses.
My oldest son lives in Leiden in an old house, and when I'm dogsitting, and have to go upstairs at night (because at some time you have to go to bed), I cling myself at the handrail. The same thing in the morning, the other way around.

I think that has to do with a time period. Modern Dutch houses don't have that issue unless by choice.
And it's easiliy solvable there are many simple solutions to stick/fix carpet, rubber, cork (or wharever has enough grip for you) patches/grips to the stairs.
I've lived in NL for almost 50 years and the only place we ever had such stairs was the old 18th/early 19th century ornate building we started in. And after my mother slipped my dad glued some carpet patches to the stairs and it never happened again.
After that everywhere we lived it was either full carpet, cork patches, carpet patches or rubber ridges. But occationally we still fell when running up/down or miss stepped.
So maybe a solution for you too... I think they even have transparent patches if estetics is important.
      Great video, thank you!

Yes stairs can be tricky... Hope you do not suffer too much pain! I returned this weekend from Massachusetts and there were the most beautiful fall colors and I do like some other aspects and people but you are right: Some restaurants are EXTREMELY LOUD!! To that level you can not have a decent conversation without yelling! And I hate it that even mildly expensive hotels serve a very mediocre breakfast buffet without decent bread on paper plates and foam dishes and plastic forks, knives and spoons. If I would like that I would go camping and even then I use probably metal re-usable silverware. I have seen this trend everywhere in the USA by the way..

My first experience with a Dutch stairs was in a coffee shop it wasn't so bad going up.. I was terrified going back down baked, I probably crawled in reverse.
The stairs thing is a space saving exercise, in the UK the stairs are normal 😉 what makes the Netherlands so great for walking, cycling and public transport is that everything is close together, far more efficient use, so in the US it might be impossible as the catchment area has so few people per square km. Personally I prefer the benefits in NL, car based society's suck ☺️

Aww, I hope you get better and it wasnt broken bones. Space is an issue here, so if you have to choose between a spacous stairs and a small livingroom or hall. Or the "'usefull rooms" bigger and some less spacious stairs, most go for the less spacious stairs because that's for just going up and down and the rooms are more effective if they're bigger. I have carpeted stairs, and i fell down them anyway, my foot slid inside the sock past the rim, so i lost ballance. Good thing was, it happend going down and i was nearly there. I skipped the last 2 steps and twisted my ankle upon landing. Luckily that was all the "damage". Key to succesfull climbing stairs is not be hasty and a deathgrip on the railing.😉
As for mountains, no we dont have those, the highest "mountain" we have is "De Vaalserberg" this hilltop is the highest point on the mainland. It stands 322,4 m above NAP (waterlevel) (Its not the highest point in the Dutch territory though. That would be a Volcano "Mount Scenery" on Saba. 887 m NAP). South Limburg feels "foreign" because it's full of hills.

Welcome back, Tracy! The ads I totally get. I was in the US for the first time in the 1990s. It irritated me to no end that any program one watched was interrupted for a commercial every 10 minutes; not even talking about politics here! That said, I haven't watched regular TV in over 10 years, so ads are an odd duck for me.🙃
Your comments show that you're 'Dutchifying' though.🤫 'Doe normaal dan doe je al gek genoeg' -> small & cosy -> enjoy life actively, lovingly & relaxed.🥰
As for the stairs, what you're saying is probably aimed at older stairs? There is a really interesting documentary on TH-cam about Victorian household killers. It has an excerpt about stairs. In the 1800s stairs were built for small houses, lending rise to smaller steps and the stairs being generally unsafe. They've done tests and everything. Falling of those older stairs is proven science: you can't help but misstep or fall! The downside of having historic houses... That said, hope that heals soon, Tracy! Have you seen a doctor? No lasting effects?
Noise etc. due to houses being close to each other, fair point. If you have a newly built house your will have less of an issue though. Should you ever be able/want to buy, go for a house that was built in the last 15 years. Isolation is pretty good and also helps with heat/cold issues. That said, the noise won't ever be completely cancelled out, unfortunately...
Landscape is a fair point, but... we do have variety that you haven't seen yet! We have the lakes in Friesland, the hilly countryside around Nijmegen and of course the 'mountainous' area of Limburg (a hill of 100 meters is a mountain here🤭). The Achterhoek & Gelderland in general are gorgeous imo. That said, keep in mind that if you compare NL to the US, you should include Austria, Ireland, Croatia etc. in all those different landscapes pallets. I mean, visiting the Dust-bowl USA isn't the same as strolling around Yosemite.🙃EU > US!
Enjoy the holiday season! October to December is my favorite time of year here. So much warmth, lights & enjoyment. Don't forget Kasteel ter Haar & it's Christmas Fair! Wonderful to have you both back.🤗

Yes! Definitely an older house (we think maybe the 1930’s?) No lingering effects other than some tenderness and embarrassment. 😂
We’re so looking forward to exploring much of the Dutch landscape we haven’t seen yet. And yes, Castle De Haar may have to be on our list again soon-especially around the holidays!

@@TAndTGoDutch Oooh those houses from the 1930s! So cosy, but usually made for workers in factories etc. & thus have the same horrid stairs from the 1800s. Be careful! I had a student in my class today who also slipped on the same kind of stairs. He had a broken foot...
Looking forward to your adventures! Enjoy these weeks. There is so much beauty around us.🥰

Interesting, but overwhelmingly full of choices choices. I'm sure they must have been annoyed at my stopping and gawking at all the products, but they never said anything. Maybe rolled their eyes a few times, though. Hahaha

The size of stairs in houses from the last 20? years (I don't know when they where standardized for new houses) are good. I personally think the stairs (always take the non powered) at train stations are not steep enough. Where I worked before we had a stairs with little stepps (not as bad as the tiny steps at old Amsterdam houses). With my 1,71 it was doable, but one of the employers was over two meters and had to place his feets sideways. it looked very funny haha.
Comparing landscapes from country's with size differences like this, lol.

Bringing everything within walking or biking distance has a price; more density. Pretty mountains can be found 200 miles away from here in Germany, how far did you have to drive in the USA for the seaside and beaches 😉

  • @eefaaf
    @eefaaf ปีที่แล้ว

Hehe, Mountains in the Netherlands... Closest thing in Leiden is de Burcht... so, none.
Next best thing is going to the dunes, as I would as a child living in Haarlem: het Kopje van Bloemendaal with a whopping 43 meters (does 141 feet sound more impressive?) above sea level.
Closer to home then Zuid Limburg is de Utrechtse Heuvelrug (with the Amerongse berg) or de Veluwe (where you can top 100m above NAP).
If you do want to go all the way to Limburg, you might as well go a bit beyond, and visit the Ardennen in Belgium and Luxemburg, or even venture into Germany. After all, those distances are peanuts compared what you would call a short trip in the US, where you wouldn't even need to cross a state border.

Space: it depends where you live in the Netherlands. in the countryside there is really enough space. I live now a 30 minutes drive from Amsterdam , with the cows and horses and sheep in my back yard .
The steep staircase: first of all get well soon.
you must indeed ensure that you do not have a slippery staircase, so put something on it so that it is no longer slippery and take your time when walking down the stairs and then no accidents wil hopefully happen.

If you went to Colorado to see the mountains you should go to Germany, Belgium, France or any other country in Europe. I drove through Texas last week. It’s pretty flat, windy and with a lot of sand. From one side of Texas to the other side of Texas is like driving from the most northern place in the Netherlands to the south of Spain. You see and experience much more diversity in people, language and customs on that trip than going through Texas. Don’t get me wrong, I love driving through every state but the neighborhoods, homes, food, drinks, and so on are more of the same, with the exception of a few local dishes. By driving through all states you also notice something else that is much different in the USA….OMG the driving 😱 I truly wonder why there are traffic laws. Almost nobody seem to live by them, unless they get hit and all hell breaks loose.
