Just before I got my L's when I was 15, my parents had a spare 1997 fairmont but it had some fuel related issues and wouldn't start. The idea was to get it running so I could use it to get my Ps but needed to prove to my parents it was a fuel issue and not something else. So I literally grabbed the gas tank from the bbq, and shoved some vinyl tubing from my mum's fishtank into the intake manifold via one of the vacuum lines all duct taped together. I had to adjust the flow rate of the LPG to get the right air/fuel ratio but the engine just started right up and sustained an idle.
Of course moving the throttle flap stopped the engine unless I also turned the valve on the bbq tank bottle with the other hand to maintain the fuel/air ratio. At that point my parents believed me, in that it was indeed a fuel related issue but we ended up selling the car anyway.

Taking the mick out of the commo here, got a good laugh out of it. Moreso since i have a VEII SSV Ute myself. Been around a good few falcons, when my dad owned XF's to EB's from the mid 2000's to early 2010's. All cheapo, all under a grand & most were LPG as well, so they were cheap to run. Though the last one he bought, was an NAII Fairlane Ghia from $1000, ended up flogging of to a bloke for $400 or so in the end, still a nice one that was. The intech, followed up by the legendary Barra Six. What some have called the australian 2JZ even, a great motor for sure. And not matter what, the age old battle of the Falcon vs. the Commodore will keep going, a good bit of harmless fun it is. Though i'll say, the falcon died with dignity, whereas the commodore became the eurodore, and was the total opposite

As a bogan who has owned both, you’ve got it wrong. Let me address each of your points and why your missing some subtle advantages of the Crappydo… er.. Commodore:
    1. Every time someone buys a commodore, they contribute $100 more to the economy to save used car dealer unemployment and provide that little more stamp duty to their state. People who buy falcons are duping tax avoiders.
    2. No No No No.. Holden wasn’t dumping Aussie engines - perish the thought.. In fact, as Australia is a wealthy country and America were so poor at the time, Holden and it’s buying bogan public extended the hand of friendly charity to our American compatriots. A friends father was an engineer at GMH at the time, and he nostalgically looks back at changing the rocker cover to say Holden.. a real piece of art. And those Ford engines were, well… noisy and loud.. even too much for Bogan Holden owners.
    3. Again.. you have it wrong.. that relative lack of durability was a design feature to keep people buying more and making the whole economy more durable. And what self-respecting bogan needs more than a 2-keg carrying capcity, anyway. The Falcon was just a waste of carrying capacity.
    4. That wasn’t a Falcon burning off a commodore with more power.. the banana in the diff gave it a better spin ratio or whatever that ratio is called.
    5. Jim Bean v., Meth Bogans? Shows that the Commodore drivers have far more luxuriously expensive tastes - and even helps the black market economy - win/win.
    6. Looks.. beauty is in the eye of the bogan…
    7. Oh, what about Found on Rubbish Dump/Failed on Race Day.. You just picked an outlier case. I will have you know my VS commodore only needed a new reverse gear, diff, and ignition harness in its first 10 years of travel. Some of it was even after it clocked 140,000 kms.

We bought a VX Commodore from a government auction. A base model ex NSW health Service, 45,000 km. It was nice enough to drive but it spent a lot of time at the Holden dealer being repaired. Things would just fail. after 305,000km we retired it as there were burned out valves in the V6 engine. At the same time roughly, my Father bought an ex National Bank company 2001 Ford Falcon SR 6 cyl. from Hansaker Ford in Narromine. It was a 2 yrld car with warranty. 289,000 km later, its still with us. Apart from a service by Ford every 10,000,km, its only had its exhaust, radiator, hoses, 1 window motor, brakes, ball joints replaced. Amazingly reliable and trouble free.

As an American, I can clearly see that these cars were very American, especially the Falcon which was from an American brand. Furthermore, both the Falcon and Commodore had sedan, station wagon and pickup variants. It looks like for the former, the Crown Vic, Country Squire and Ranchero survived longer in Australia and for the former, it’s the Impala, Caprice Wagon and El Camino that lived on. For American cars with multiple body styles for the same model, they were common in the 1960s but almost extinct by the 2000s. Australia really did keep classic American cars alive up until 2017.

Most reliable Ford Ive ever owned is made my Mazda...
Holdens send me broke & always end up injured working on Fords, but until I got stuck with the Festi' Trio, the most reliable I ever had was a VF Slant6 ute with three on the tree!
From 15mph to off the clock all in top, tow home a mates cattle truck, collecting railway sleepers or chasing pork-chops AND get ya home with just enough fuel to not start tomorrow...
That thing did it all, except the meter-full causeway at 70mile an hour, yet still got us 25k to town @ full noise before it pinched up! :v
Anyway, cheers & congrats, going through on a binge again... ;)

One of the best most reliable US Ford engines was and still is the 4.6 litre V8. It was Mazda derived from their very successful 2.3 litre 4 cylinder engine. Ford have an interest Mazda. It was siamesed joined into a 4.6 V8. They call it a Coyote 4.6 but it was around in Taxis, Police cars Pickups and everything in between before the 5 Litre Coyote even came along or was even heard of. This engine was in one of the most reliable Police cars of all time the Ford Victoria. Ford Australia used quite a few off the shelf components from this car for the AU Falcon onwards including power steering and air bag components which proved a Godsend because no Australia manufactured Falcon ever suffered from the Takata air bag saga as GM Toyota BMW VW did, as well some other high end brands that are still to this day trying to sort. The US Ford 4.6 litre and Coyote 5 litre V8 engines can be powerful and reliable engines but to hop them even just a little in most US States takes $$$ and then the end result can be an unreliable engine in which to maintain the power starts to cost mega $$$. This is where the Barra i6 shines and the performance fraternity in the US are just starting to realise this. The performance cost per dollar of the Aussie i6 Barra Turbo engine even for just a little more street power is now a legend. There are many many reasons why Ford Australia never exported the i6 engine to the US and shut up shop in 2016. One of those reasons was that the Barra i6 was never going to make Euro 4 or 5 emissions without direct injection technology. Way too much investment the US Parent Company wanted to become involved in coupled with the fact that everyone wanted to drive a 4X4 or SUV in a declining and limited market. I think for that we should be thankful for the great era we had up until 2016 and enjoy every minute of our wonderful Ford Barras. I am 76 and in 2003 I bought a new Pearl Blue Ford Fairmont i6 non Turbo. It has been King springed, fully nolathaned, extra well maintained, so with 550.000kms and 20 years later its puppy love. Running FG Series l XR6 17 in wheels in original alloy silver she looks a million dollars. Better than the first day l laid my eyes on her on the showroom floor. Whats left of my family may very well have to bury me in this car.

From a Ford family, but would take a Holden commodore any day before buying an import. We should have kept manufacturing Ford, Holdens and Chryslers. Stop or slow down imports to 20%. Who cares if it costs more, it’s better for the Country. Parts for the next 50 years after each model. No new models allowed for ten years at a time. Better overall for all Australians. Simplicity and affordability trump fancy expensive gimmicks hands down.

  • @timhinchcliffe5372

For ages, the Commodore was the least Australian made car with around 50% local made content, which was less than the Magna and Camry/Aurion... and much less than the Falcon at 90%+.
But Holden bogans would say there isn't Holden in other countries (except NZ), so somehow therefore _more 'strayin._

Hey so I'm a fan of your channel but I've been looking for a car an extremely reliable one I can't sacrifice the reliability but I can choose between all the ford falcon and the Holden cars since they aren't in my country , especially with minimal information on these I can't know the best one between the v8s or just the bearers. I'm in Africa Kenya and Even though I'm looking for a lasting car because for me I definitely don't want to sacrifice longevity even though the bearers or the v8s still have good performance I don't want to sacrifice reliability since I'm in Africa and the conditions are somewhat similar to Australia where the land cruiser dominates but I'm not into the SUVs since I'm young so if you could really help I'll be glad . Ooh and the mods I'll be running are maybe the suspension mods wheels breaks and maybe stuff to support the turbo to make it more reliable , and out of these if there is a wagon in there I would not mind

My VX commodore got rear ended like 5 times by some crack junkie, who then tried pitting me at 140kph last week
Only damage is some crumpling in the rear end and smashed tail lights
Recovering from a pit maneuver at 140kph on Salisbury highway (an absolute goat track) is something thats only possible with the superior handling of a commodore
Eventually my balls dropped and i really stuck the foot into it and left mr crackhead in the dust (legendary ecotec did some fine work there)
