A few minutes in and man... this looks PERFECT for a Witcher adventure! If the system turns out to be as awesome as it looks I'm totally buying the physical version, no joke. Also great video, Geek Gamers
I have the book wonderings I just finished purchasing your new book that's coming out on June 1st I appreciate all of this very much the only reason why I started solo gaming is because of your videos.
Thanks for the support by buying my books. I hope they are of use to you. And it’s great to hear from people who have been inspired by my vids to try solo gaming. Thanks for sharing that & enjoy!
I love how the magic items have super specific recharge requirements. I made a whole page of them, my favorite being “Thimble of Protection, 1 charge. When you would take damage, the attack or effect instead bounces harmlessly off of the thimble. Recharge: press a pricked finger against the thimble for 1 minutes
Just started looking into solo rpgs. This one was great except for one thing. 90% of the time when I rolled for a monster it landed on a lady that wanted to talk to my manager.
My advice, given in this channel and in my book, is that when you have repeated random rolls turn them into abstract concepts and themes rather than the actual thing itself.
It is from Runebound... though I’d disagree that’s an underrated game. Seems people (myself included) consistently rank it among the top adventure games ever made.
@@GeekGamers01 really? ....I didn't know about that. I thought it was underrated because I never saw anyone mentioning or talking about it for several years.... Maybe I missed it somehow. But I am glad people rank it among the top games ever. 😀
Thanks for this. Cairn reminds me of another RPG I have but have yet to play it. Have you heard of Xas Irkalla? It has amazing black and white art that I think you will like knowing your taste from the many videos I have seen from your channel. It is dark and gloomy. I was wondering if your Solo Game Masters Guide would work with Xas Irkalla?
I have not heard of that RPG but will look into it based on your comments. And yes-my SOLO GAME MASTER’S GUIDE will work with any rule set. The strategies and skills enable anyone to approach any rule set, big or small, crunchy or light, new or old, and know what to do.
@@GeekGamers01 That is great news. As for Xas Irkalla, it has been ranked as one of the most brutal RPG games ever. I think it may be right up your alley. The art is fantastic. I have a tendency to be attracted to very dark themed games. This one fills all the qualifications. There are some youtube players that have played some of the scenarios from the book on you tube.
@@medievalwizard352 I’ve looked up Xas Irkalla and I can see why you are suggesting it. Unfortunately it seems as if physical copies of the gamebook are no longer available & I can’t easily do a vid with just a pdf so I’m not going to get it. Looks quite unique however and I appreciate the suggestion. I will keep an eye out for it.
@@GeekGamers01 Oh my, it's gone out of print already. I checked too, and ebay sellers are gouging for it. selling the book for hundreds of dollars. such a crime.

Great video, very interesting. I have to say though, FlexTale doesn't seem like a good fit for Cairn to me, at all. That splintertrees entry is oddly specific and weird, and its mechanics are clearly tailored for D&D5e or similar. It's not particularly interesting or interactive, either, just a randomised HP tax.
While I wouldn’t typically use FlexTales with this rule set I had it lying around as I’m also working on a vid just about that. I thought it actually worked nicely with the story and location but obviously opinions vary! Glad you enjoyed the vid anyhow.

I might have missed a detail or two in the video(I'm only par tof the way thru), but did you revise the combat structure at all? The only thing I do NOT like about Cairn and Into The Odd (and I think Knave), is the combat - no to hit roll - you always hit and do damage, which just doesn't make sense to me. I'd create a house rule for a separate to-hit roll.
Just chipping in to clarify some information - I've been running Knave recently, it does have a to-hit roll. D20+stat = greater than enemy defense is a hit. Knave is more of a neighbor to OD&D, B/X D&D and OSR tabletops than Into the Odd :)
@@lucasterable Check out the combat rules for Mythic Bastionland - it now has some more details that make much more sense with this kind of system. I really like how it works. It's much more strategy in avoiding damage.
Sorry I don’t. This is why I don’t provide links often… things go in and out of availability. They were there 3 months ago… I don’t see them either now
Just finished trying it solo. It worked wonderfully. Glad to see your always inspiring take on these games.

Nice!
Thank you for always inspiring me.
Loved this. I am a fan of the Carin ruleset and this video gives me a good base.ine on how to use it for Solo play. Thank you.
One tip for your cards. Give them a light hit with hairspray.

Great videos, these are amazing resources. Have you ever looked at Cyberpunk Red?
Thanks so much. I have not looked at that, no. I will look it up.
I used Harpers Quest 2 page 4 and I got:

I didn’t change anything, no, but that is an easy house rule to apply, as you say.

Hit throw could be roll under STR for melee and roll under DEX for ranged and roll under WIL for magic.
