Hello Andrew Thanks for your simple, no fuss video on warping, so easy to follow, you can use as many warping threads and colours you want, the idea of putting the little cards each side of the warp to get your figure eight is fab.
Bruce: When using a warp which is knotted at either end, I invariably use a pattern that naturally takes the twist out. For instance, a chevron pattern will build up twist forever, but a diamond pattern will remove it's own twist. It is possible to tie a comb into the warp with one card's worth of yarn in each slot, and use that to push the twist right back to the other end of the warp. If you want to continue a pattern that has uneven twist buildup, like egyptian diagonals for instance, then you will have to do this. Eventually you will reach the twist though, no matter how much you keep pushing the twist back. The answer is to untie the end knot and untwist each card's yarn seperately, then tie the end knot again. There is another way of preventing twist from building up at all, but it's a little complicated and beyond the scope of a youtube comment. I shall make another video at some point
Seriously, I wish you would host a one-week seminar on how to do this. It's so much easier to learn from someone face to face than it is online. There is no courses here in Sandnes, Norway to teach it :/ Guess that's the tiny problem in wanting to learn an oooold art.
+Miranda Myklebust Thank you Miranda, unfortunately for you I live in Greece, so not too convenient. I bet you can find a teacher nearer to you though. There are some really good tablet weavers in your part of the world
They nearly ALWAYS have Nyan cat. I mean, maybe not "literally".... if only metaphorically.... Sorry, I'm being a jackass. But your video was helpful; I managed to warp my first set of tablets.
So I trying to watch the thread direction and it looks like that by doing it this way, the yarn flipflops between going through holes from the back to going through holes in the front as you go back and forth. Is that correct? If so, when your pattern calls for X amount of cards going through one direction--the same direction--how do you get around that when you go back and forth? I am new to this so if that's a dumb question I apologize.
The issue with the way I make my warps is I tend to weave almost exclusively backstrap style, unless I'm doing fancy doubleface patterning on fine threads and need the stability offered by a loom. As such I simply put a knotted loop in both ends in order that I can hook the warp end to a door or window hook or something like that. This means there's a big lump at the start of the warp so it's not ideal for winding onto a warp beam. That being said, it's by no means undoable. I remember I once put a very long warp onto my inkle loom and secured the free warp end with a kind of knot which I just undid when I wanted to advance the warp. The loom in the picture is basically having the warp wound as if on a normal handloom, and with such a narrow warp as in tablet weaving you can usually get away with being a good deal more rough and ready with the warp. I hope to find time over easter to make a video or two. I've been quiet here recently due to work getting very hectic at this time of year.
I don't understand what you mean. Do you mean what would you do if there was different arrangements of yarns in different cards? In this case I would do one set of cards in, for instance, blue, blue, white, white and then tie off and do another single card in the other colour combination, all blue for instance. Usually when weaving, I have one card on either side which contains only one colour and is the same in colour as the weft yarn. I warp these last. When the finally tied off altogether, I then rearrange the cards so they are in their correct positions
I adore your matter of fact, simple, realistic approach to these videos.....thank you

NOW I understand how to make the continuous warp. Thanks!
Educational and entertaining. Thanks!
Shelagh Lewins website is really helpful. Thank you Andrew, this is the best video I've found :)
Brilliant method! Thanks very much!

Very helpful; thanks for posting. Finally a warping video that does not have Nyan cat at the end.
There's warping videos with non cat at the end? That I have to see

mctrmt well, so long as my video us helpful I'm happy

absolutely brillliant
Great video hope to see more.
Very helpful! Thanks for this! :)
Thank you for posting this. I'm not sure how to transfer the warp to the loom after finishing this. I am using a box/tape loom. Any advice?
Does your loom look like this www.lucets.com/images/cardloom.jpg

***** It's pretty similiar to that.
if a pattern would have 4 strings of the same color in one card, how would you rearrange the cards?

I like Nyan cat. 😜
everyone likes nyan cat.
