Sounds like he is the same age as me, because I was just nine then. I wouldn't want to be rich - fame and wealth don't impress or excite me. As I became a Christian five years later, aged fourteen, the world's ways underwhelmed me and now at 52 I feel that boy's attitude was right!

English people are (or were) brought up to be humble, self deprecating and that showing off and extravagance was a bit unseemly.
