    I equate Nick Drake to Van Gogh... not real popular in their own time, but true masters of their craft leaving pure gold for future generations.

    Thank you for sharing this tutorial for Pink Moon with us. From arguably one of the most creative and unique guitarists to have walked this earth. Loved the floating guitar chord charts and the emphasis on certain techniques and Fret movements that can be very difficult to follow/understand via observation. Keep up the great work fellow guitar geek 😊🤘🏿🔥
    Kind regards,
    Blessings,
    Ethan.

    Thank you so much for this lesson. Just a heads up for any comment readers, in case you were confused: the tuning is CGCFCE without the capo!
    Thanks again, Jon.

    Thanks for sharing this tutorial for a Nick Drake classic. One smaller point: tone. As Josh Turner showed in a lengthy analysis of the Nick Drake sound, Nick was probably using very dead nickel strings that contribute a lot to the unique quality of his sound.

    • @jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween
      @jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely, and while I am focusing on the technical compliments, his tone is absolutely key to his style and sound.

    Anticipating the 50th anniversary of Pink Moon coming up this Friday, I've been working on an arrangement for this one. I'm curious as to why most people tune down so low and then capo vs. tuning DADGDF#? Is it bc tuning up the high E is a little tight? It does seem easier on the hands to use the capo, but I wonder how Nick did it.

    Great. I go online to learn this song and wow, 8 minutes is all it takes. THANK YOU for taking the time to share this.
    Edit: Now I realise this could actually take a while bcos it's really hard to get the timing of the voice to fit with the syncopated strum. Anyone else have this issue?

      @@jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween I have had a particularly difficult time with Peter Gabriel's Salisbury Hill. Just counting it confuses me. The same with a lot of the old Pretender's stuff. I believe I have a decent grasp of 4/4, 3/4 and 6/8 along with the Diddly beat but anything outside of that. . . I just more or less limp along with Pete on that one.
      I like your teaching style. I've been trying to figure out Pink Moon forever and thanks to you know that I have I've discovered a lot less folks are familiar with it than I expected.
      I appreciate how much hard, creative work you must put into this.

    I play the lead part an octave higher to give the guitar the illusion of the piano. It also sounds more "like the record". Also, I play it dynamically by digging into the verse chords and smoothly playing the chords on the second fret with feeling. Getting the strum correct on the chorus is near impossible since it is in like 5/4 to 7/4. Its all ear training at that point.

    This seemed like such a good tutorial and I was excited. However, I got stuck, and frustrated at the first part about how the guitar needs to be tuned. Is it what you say, without the capo or with. Even so the strings get to loose and rattle? What am I doing wrong sigh

    • @jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween
      @jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The strings need to be tuned to the pitches I listed in the video without the capo, but if you try to play along with Nick's recording, you'll find you are slightly off. He probably was not using a tuner and just tuned the guitar by ear. If you want to play along with the recording, tune your guitar first, put on the capo, start the recording, and try to match your 6th string to his 6th string.
