    As a kid, I enjoyed listening Radio Luxemburg in our apartment in Leningrad USSR between 1968 and 1971 - time when I left for my University studies in Moscow. In Moscow the reception quality was too poor to have any fun.
    If not RL, there was no other way to listen good quality Western pop in the USSR. Live long RL in my memory!

      It's pretty astonishing that a commercial radio station could have played a small part in bringing the cold war to an end!

    • @tarimdarya
      @tarimdarya ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ketrin-fz8be I don't think RL ever did this. At that time I was young but not stupid enough to believe in ""western Democracy" values. The time has shown that I was right. But I really like RL, because Soviet pop was extemely boring. Maybe it was ok for older generations, but not for youngsters like me

      @@tarimdarya Whatever you think of western democracy, there's no doubt the station's influence went far beyond what its owners intended.

      @@ketrin-fz8be The station was great, no doubt. As an American Citizen now, I also think that western democracy values are way overblown. As a kid, I felt very protected living in the USSR, but now I feel very scary living under mad US president. BTW the phenomenon of RL was due to the ban of commercial music stations in the UK, nothing else. Any way, RL is my youth, and it stays with me forever

    Rob is back on Boom Radio on Saturdays, and he plays power plays. Try Boom Radio on DAB , superb nostalgia voices to take us through these dark times. ❤

    I remember Rob Jones, one of my fave DJs on Radio Luxembourg. If I'm not mistaken, he hosted the Futuristic Top 40 in 82 and 83 and played a lot of cool New Wave electronic tracks that didn't get much airplay anywhere else.

    As others have mentioned, it's Tony Prince DJing on the early part of this recording, up to "Ring My Bell". After then it is Rob Jones. Funny to think that reception in Sweden was better than in southern Britain.

    CLTUFA made a big mistake in closing down Radio Luxembourg end of 1992.
    I would have explored avenues to bring in extra cash for the station, such as -
    a) hiring out 15350 kHz Shortwave to external partners,
    b) broadcasting paid for programmes at various times of day instead of constant repetitive Music Jam all day long i.e religious programmes / specialist interest programmes i.e cinema / consumer electronics / motoring shows etc,
    c) selling Pan European advertising in European languages as well as English to all countries within reach of Radio Luxembourg's Astra 1A transmission area at very attractive rates,
    d) sending out information packs to cable TV operators / FM partner stations / hospital radio stations / satellite radio stations etc with a 30min HiFi VHS Stereo video about Radio Luxembourg, it's illustrious history and how to tune in cable head ends to carry it plus satellite / frequency and audio subcarrier details to tune it in, plus info and bumph on the station,
    e) Bring back the sponsored shows i.e clothing stores, consumer electronics brands like Panasonic Sharp Onkyo JVC etc, car companies ie VW TVR BMW Mini Rolls Royce etc, movie studios like Warner Disney Miramax etc, recordable media companies like Maxell and TDK, consumer alcoholic drinks companies like Babycham, and others (these sponsored shows helped bring in revenue when a companies ads were played and the station helped the sponsors products get promoted and given away in competitions).

      Yeah, it was Tony Prince who presented the 208 Disco charts from 1979 until at least the mid 80s sometime.
