- My Zeiss has been replaced with a Canon 16-35mm lens and in the video I show you my thoughts on why I switched wide angle lenses and why I opted for a super wide 16mm lens. I take you out on my first landscape shoot with this wide lens and discuss my composition, I also talk through my choice of filters and show how I am focus stacking the image.

Love focus stacking. And I hate it. Each shot, 3 times, 3 times editing, merging - I try to avoid it. But sometimes the composition allows no other choice. It's great to learn such things from your videos, Thomas!

Tom, just re watched this video as i am planning on showing it to our camera club next week as i am putting together a talk on landscape photography. I took up photography only 3 years ago and have watch everyone of your videos and you have pretty much taught me everything i know.....and i have proudly won quite a few landscape competitions along the way. Thomas Heaton hey Thomas!! I love your videos!! I invested in the Lee system and love it so far. I have the circular polarizer, 2 stop soft, 3 stop hard, big and little stoppers. Are there any others I should add that you think are essential? Thanks!! Gary

After watching this fantastic video I bought the Canon 10-22mm and I am looking so much forward to give it a go during the Easter holiday. Absolutely love the 16-35 f4 IS. My favorite lens for pretty much everything on my 5DIV.
Looks like I am heading towards the 16-35. I just got the 5DIV the 24-70 f/2.8 , the 300 f/2.8 IS II USM and the 85 macro

Man that image was FANTASTIC! Also, I've had the the 16-35 f/4 since it came out and it is definitely one of my all time favorite lenses. I use it for landscapes, action sports, architecture, and even astro when my other astro lenses are in use, and it is beyond awesome for video, which I shoot a lot. Glad to see you're happy with it, and definitely look forward to more of your images from it!
Super image Tom and some cracking advice
Great video you are teaching me so much - thank you. I recently purchased a second hand 17-40 f4L and I love it. It is as sharp as a tack and was cheap too. It pairs perfectly with my 6D - I used to shoot landscapes with my 24-105 F4L but the wide angle of this lens really cuts the mustard. I used the same rationale as you did when you purchased you 16-35 F4L. Keep up the great work - much appreciated.
Once again, another opportunity to learn from you. I like the way you did the focus stacking. If you could show a small video of how you placed them together in Photoshop that would be great also. Keep up the amazing work!

Great video! Good choice in lenses Thomas. I'm in a similar situation with the Nikon 16-35mm f/4.0. The 14-24mm f/2.8 is an awesome lens but a beast to carry, especially on a multi day backpack.
Adam Gibbs the 18 35 g is a nice option too, considerably lighter and cheaper
Hi Thomas, I have been watching your video for a little over a year. Learning how you scout out nice composition etc. Its been a great help to me, in my endeavour to advance my photography skills. In a little over a year, my photography skills have advanced to the point I always look at the scene, include foreground when possible, turning the right focus, f stop etc. All these, are mostly attributed to you sharing the setting online. This video in particular, has taught me how to use the Super Wide Angle Lens properly. YOU INSPIRE ME.
P/S: Do not get distracted by the bad comments, this is a free world, they are allowed to post whatever comment they wish. DO HOWEVER, look closer to what those negative comments have said (Reading between the lines too) and figure out a way to come out on TOP. CHEERS!

I've been a follower of your channel for quite a while now and this video for me personally is one of the better ones. I've taken away some very useful tips on focus stacking along with using the polariser, wonderful explanations! Keep the content coming!
How did your lens fare with focus breathing? My Canon 16-35mm f/4 suffers from it and makes the stiching a pain!
Mads Peter Iversen was thinking of this issue but looks like it worked out in this case.
Mads Peter Iversen, I find that Photoshop's "auto-align" feature works quite well, even if the "auto-blend" feature totally ruins it sometimes. What I do is, shoot 5-10 focus-bracketed shots going from the nearest scene to infinity, and then that gives me a greater variety of choices to stack and blend, sometimes if auto-blend works very well, and other times when I have to do the blend manually.
Mads Peter Iversen same problem here, you do have to crop a bit of the edges when focus stacking
Yes, this is always the challenge with stacking. It very much depends on the image, apperture, focal length etc, but sometimes I have to work a little harder when masking the images. This photo wasn't too bad.

With a TSE 17mm you can tilt the focal plane to achieve this in 1 shot. Surprised he doesn't have this lens I use it everyday for Architecture its an absolute game changer. The 24 TSE is better, I use it less. Bit of a pain to use a polarizer with a 17mm TSE though.

i even gave it a name - shifty;
i wash it every night and dry it in the oven

You don't really achieve this, but get something similar. Not the whole shot is in focus, but instead you you get basically a Gradient of your focus plane wandering true your image. It's cool, but it is not the same for this kind of shots.

Could you show us how you put the 3 photos together .?
Load the photos as layers in Photoshop, then use the Auto Align Layers feature followed by Auto Blend Layers set to "Stack Images" instead of "Panorama". Photoshop'll pick the sharp parts from each photo for you automatically. Or if you want more control over the process, you can paint your own Layer Mask to blend the layers together.
Outstanding video. Very instructive and incredibly subtle useful information for the budding landscape photographer. I love his approach, his conversational style and the succinct nature of the information he shares.
Yup, the minute you say, "I don't do much astro" ...it becomes pretty dumb to lug around the extra ounces of an f/2.8 monster.
On that note, Thomas, have you tried either the 24-70mm f/4 L IS, or the 24-105mm f/4 L IS mk2? both are *nearly* as sharp as the mk2 2.8, and much lighter.
Actually, as an alternative, if you like how the 16-35 f/4 fares at 24mm, you might also consider trying to go out with just the 16-35 and 70-200 f/4 duo, and if you need it something in between that is lightweight, like the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC, or (gasp) the non-L Canon 50mm f1.8 STM, since it's actually quite good at f/8-16.
Matthew Saville Seriously? The 24-70 F4L IS is not even close to as sharp at the 24-70 2.8 II. This is especially true in the middle of the focal range at the corners. I was glad to be rid of it.
I agree. Had the 16-35f4L IS but upgraded to the ''III''. No regrets whatsoever. Have the trinity of 2.8 zooms Had the trinity of ''4s'' before that. Prefer the 2.8s. No need to lay awake at night and wonder. Very surprised Thomas chose the f4 over the 2.8 III given he has the 24-70 2.8.
Been right through the channel once, but not every video. Now back tracking and picking up ones I missed and re-watching others. Cracking view of Dunstanburgh Castle. Only ever taken pictures from the south.

Don’t do it! That’s my absolute favourite lens. Nothing else I’ve found is as sharp and with the micro contrast second to none. Also it has almost no chroma and very low distortion. That canon has nothing on the zeiss.
