This episode concentrates on the Vikings and their inventive craftsmanship, the expansive Carolingians' art of exquisite finesse and richness and the skillful hardworking ingenious Anglo-Saxons. Januszczak shows the Viking skill in making ships and their attacks on Christian centres such as Lindisfarne not only to loot but to defend their own Norse gods.
He visits the Jelling stones that commemorated the Danes' conversion to Christianity. Charles Martel and the Franks belief they were God's chosen people after the defeat of Muslim forces later led to Charlemagne being declared Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope and the creation of the largest empire since the Romans.
Januszczak considers Charlemagne's Palatine Chapel, Aachen, as a brutal and cold attempt to copy the Muslim Mosque of Cordoba. Anglo-Saxon art is represented by the Sutton Hoo hoard. Januszczak concludes that in the Dark Ages it was not the sword but the written word, whether in wood, stone, or what he considers the greatest masterpiece of all art, the Lindisfarne Gospels, that defined the age.
Perspective is TH-cam's home for the arts. Come here to get your fill of great music, theatre, art and much, much more!

Waldemar’s Perspective productions are like a combination of travelogue, sociology, psychology, geography, history, and art - all delivered in a style that is entertaining and accessible for the lay person. He gives the viewer the perspective of art history from both the forest and the trees, and as a result makes a strong case for his perspectives on art. It’s how every Art History 101 should be taught.

There's even archeological evidence that Europes biggest market city existed in southern Sweden...
They weren't all farmers and raiders. And they didn't live like cavemen at all. They just didn't build christian temples.

Well, this was on tv first - it's a BBC production. All the complaining about the adds is annoying, though. I mean, adblock exists, anyway, and it's very flexible. Watching a couple of ads seems fair in return for good content, but if a youtube channel exploits the ad system and puts in too many (like this one), why should the audience bother watching ads from them at all?

    • @patlong3903

To this TH-cam Channel: I really appreciate the content you host here, but there's a reasonable number of ads you can put on a video (2-3 is really the maximum I'll tolerate anyway). If you put in too many, people will lose patience and do one of 2 things: go elsewhere, or use adblock.
Once a channel has used too many adds on a video, I block ads for all videos on that channel. Apps these days make this very easy to do and I doubt I'm the only one with such a system.

At 23:49. Yes, I've seen finer jewelry than what the Anglo-Saxons achieved. They're jewels from T'ang China. Just go to museums with T'ang Chinese bling and you will be amazed. Just as impressive as any Anglo-Saxon jewel--extremely intricate, exquisite, with the finest, tiniest details you will ever see in gold, silver and precious stones. T'ang Chinese jewelry was also made at roughly the same time as Anglo-Saxon jewelry, between 600 AD and 800 AD. You will be mighty impressed.

The Norse (not Viking as Viking means Pirate, (say the Norse not the Vikings unless it is referring to a raid) consisted mostly of a genetic composition mostly of R1b, so that means they arrived in Norway from Ireland in the times before 5-600 AD. The Irish had Drakkars with sails at least 2500 years before the same ships appeared in Norway at all. The rune alphabet Ogham is basically the same rune alphabet found in Scandinavia from Norse times that confirms they travelled from Ireland which is also consistent with the genetic evidence in the remnants in Norse establishments in Britain (York, Cork, Dublin etc) that basically have none so called proto Scandinavian haplogroups but only R1b in the modern times population.
BTW, it was catholicism that emerged around the year 1000 AD not "christianity", it was only the royals that adapted it officially to get to trade with Europe. What really ended the so called empirical tendencies of Norway was the plague in the thirteen hundreds that very well could have been one of history's first examples of biological warfare being used actively, because isn't it strange that one of the most isolated places in the world was the worst off? The Norse culture lived on among common people in Norway until the sixteen hundreds when the revolution of the Lutheran Protestantism from Henry VIII emerged, banning and burning all remnants of the Norse with the implementation of a "preste velde".
You might want to google search "Roman iron mining in Norway" if you're interested in creating another interesting documentary that can explain who was the Vikings and where they came from before the Norse viking times began around 700 AD. I've given you plenty of leads above.
Mentioning the Stonehenge, that probably resembles an example of one of history's first ethnical cleansings since the haplogroup of men that existed those times are gone, even their male offspring's must have been removed as it is only R1b left in the area but plentiful of female haplogroups left. This must have happened around 4000 years ago. It is important to implement this information correctly or else you fall into the cunning trap repeating the narrative disregarding and disrespecting our culture like the Lutherans did/do which I am sure isn't the intention.

R1b-L21 in Norway was probably due to gaelic slaves people taken as slaves. Dna shows that the people on viking raids came from a lot of places in Europe, not just the nordic countries. Runes were used all over mainland Europe. Ogham was restricted to the British Isles. Irish galleri, Scottish birlinn, inspired by viking ships. Can we please stop with the alternative reality already?

Poland accepted Christianity in 966 when Mieszko l married Dobravka, Czech (Christian country) Kings daughter their daughter married viking kings son perhaps that's when vikings became Christians their son as a king expanded the kingdom even to today's Canada (by that they really were first in discovery of America) lion is not just symbol of strength its symbol of Jews as a tribe that's y is all over in Christianity specially Roman catholic.. The famous one with that symbol was Saint Mark the true father of Christian religion starting all in Alexandria..

Stood next to the Oseberg Ship you feel a shiver down your spine.
      The sheer size.
It exudes both power and grief simultaneously.
      Being a burial vessel.
Thought to have been for a Viking Queen. 👑

Grab me by the ear if you'd like, but the Vikings *were* barbarous. Nice art, wretched behavior on raids even by the standards of their day. Or, as Kenneth Clark put it long, long ago - a culture, yes; a civilization, no. Outstanding documentary!
