One would pray for rain in California where the state rainfall average is eight to ten inches per year ! I used to live in Riverside , Ca. where if I wanted to maintain a green lawn , I had to water it twice each and every day. My average water bill was $150.00 a month. With May , June , July , August and Sept. usually higher than that !
Now I live here in northeastern Ohio. I've lived here on my small farm for six years where I have yet to water anything !
Just a year or two ago, they said the drought is over in Cali... Hell no, we are under average again this year... so far. Oh yeah, we have 60% chance of rain last night and today... I can smell it, the ground is wet but I yet to see "rain", lol. After learn quite a few tricks of mulching with free woodchips and leaves, my garden needs a lot less water instead of just growing a lawn. Keep up the good work guys!
I for one am interested in seeing as much of processing day as you want to show. I'm always interested in seeing how someone else does it. Never know when you might learn something.

I'm Excited about the pig! My hubby and I were butchering a hog every year, and doing it ourselves. It's a LOT of work, but rewarding and worth it. Best advice I can think to give is to collect and sharpen All your knives ahead of time and keep the sharpener there while you butcher. You'll need it.

I just got my first pair of Ariat boots! My dad took me shopping and bought them for me. I am not young but I take care of my dad so it was a special "feeling like a little girl again moment with dad" day and I cherish these boots.

My husband has a desk job, but it’s next to a large city park where he and coworkers walk around to talk through work problems. He walks through shoes so quickly!

TH-cam in general doesn't like blood, death, or injuries shown on video unless it's marked specifically medical. Maybe they can find a way to get it accepted but a Veterinarian channel even had to censor their surgeries. A Vet!
If I remember rightly though they might be able to set up an alt channel that has the butchering as private videos we can have links to.

after using that tank for the pig roast, you could stick it up in the woods and run some water lines from it with shutoff valves so you could control where the water flows from it so you don't have to run water buckets daily for the pigs, just a thought. You could make it so you could disassemble it at any time and reuse it for roasts in the future too.
Never wore ariat. Worked in oil field for year's. Cheep boots lasted 1 day to 30 day's. Wore red wing molded sole they lasted about 90 day's. Will try ariat. Looks like good boots.
That feeling right after a haircut, sleeping on dryer-fresh sheets or wearing new shoes. :)

That feeling wearing new shoes: pure pain, since it usually takes a week or two to break them in.

Ariat boots been my favorite boots for 30+ years. Great boots that last for years. Had one pair last 15 years, but i dont work like you do. If you mink oil them it helps to make them last longer.
The real test of a good boot is how well they withstand manure. Boot-dressing is always a good idea to protect the stitching. Good on Ariat, to. I'll check them out.
Scald and scrape is the way we did all our pigs on our farm during 1960’s-1970’s. I’m 67 yrs now, hello from PA.
I wear ariat now and it’s getting almost time for another pair and I am gonna use y’all’s link
This is the way my dad and his family always “killed hogs”. I still remember as a child that big ole pig hanging from an iron pole that was in a V of two huge oak trees. Then later as my dad built a fire under a 55 gallon drum so the pig could be scraped. We all gotta eat, it’s best to know where your meat is coming from and what it’s been fed.

I love the genuineness of starting over and given I've had 77 addresses in my lifetime, yes, I'm old and 69 this year so a pretty unsettled life I love being a part of your I'm unentitled lifestyle. You are real genuine Americans. I've never spent much time away from the East coast but I am so glad that you western folk moving to the east is great given that California is under attack.

I can't wait to meet y'all (we, too, moved from CA in 2018 and are proud Texans now). We are building our dream home/homestead and have a lot to learn and I have enjoyed your videos so much. I love your editing style, Meg, and hope that our channel has a similar feel to yours.
Deep South Homestead recently built a smokehouse and just made a video on curing and smoking bacon yourself. Their bacon looked so good. I remember my grandpa and grandma doing the boil-and-scrape method when processing a pig and also making cracklings.

your boot story, is how God moves in our lives... I grow up 5 of us kids, mom and dad, we raised 5 to 7 pigs, about 3doz chickens, 12 turkeys, and a cow each summer, always butchered before Thanksgiving, plus an acre garden, you should be proud, how much has been done In a year.. keep going...
Ariat boots are fantastic! I have a pair of paddock boots by a Ariat that I purchased from Rick's Saddle in NJ around 2006 and they are still going strong. I wear them all winter and when I ride my horse and for daily wear during the late fall right through winter. For really cold weather I have a pair of thermalite lined Ariat paddock boots that I purchased shortly after and they are still going strong, too. Of course I've replaced the laces endless times but you cannot miss out on quality with Ariat,

How incredible to be doing exactly what you said about 2 years ago. Working long hours but all for you and not someone else. And you get to keep all the benefits too ☺ instead of some employer reaping the rewards of your labor. Love the boots!
I used to workin restaurants and catering. Few work shoes would last past the 6 months mark. Part of it is that we guys are just heavier than girls. But having shoes that fit perfect from day one AND last 6 months is totally worth it paying extra for. I would sometimes buy several pairs so I don’t have to worry about that model being phased out.
Looking forward to the hog butcher. I really expected you to leave the barrel taller. When filling it up, consider running the water they a propane hot water heater or if you have one in the house, empty the 50gal water boiler into it. Cuts down on time. Don’t forget to put a lid on that barrel. It has a huge impact on water heating.

when we did our hogs on the farm. Grandpa had an old iron bathtub he put on blocks and built the fire under it. He welded a drain pipe with a release valve on bottom to drain the water. He said it was easier on his back to lower a pig in it than hosting one up and over. Tied the legs together and run a pole through them to lower into the water with. Good for chickens also.

I’ll be selling here at the beach in a year+ then looking for bare land south and west of them. Tiny home, large shop, livestock barn, animals. I’ve been on the ocean for the last 30 years and my next 30 will be growing/raising my own with some AMZN prime mixed in. 😉

I learned year's ago to get NEW boots/shoes WET THEN WEAR UNTIL DRY THEY WILL BE BROKE IN.
My husband is really picky when it comes to his boots, he has wide feet and thinks steel toe is a necessity for everyday. He has been wearing ariat boots for years now. Keeps buying the same boot for years. I hope you enjoy your boots!!

Wanted to say, my husband is super tough on his boots too and they used to only last 6 months or less. He started making it a habit to condition them every week. No joke, the same boots last 12+ months now. Maybe it’ll help you get a little more life out of yours. Blessings and prayers.

I have Ariats that I am still wearing that are 12 years old. They aren't really pretty, but they have held up through lots of mud and muck. Love my Ariats!

Good to see another video. It never ceases to amaze me when people on TH-cam and FB subscribe to homesteading groups and are shocked and appalled when people process animals for food.
There are vegetarian ones you grow your food and have some chicken for eggs
You can survive as fine as with livestock
@@mutantmonkey2301 This is true. But the Hollar's have been clear from the beginning that they are raising pigs for the freezer. If people want to be vegetarian or vegan that is fine, I just don't appreciate when they feel the need to be shocked, appalled, and offended when others are omnivores. Don't want to see a video about processing meat animals? Don't watch that video.
