There wasn't much of a plot, really. Most of the book was just an introduction of multiple characters who either die before the main storyline gets started or don't add anything to it later. The only possible redemption is perhaps some of them are used in sequels later but I honestly don't care anymore. The whole thing was a huge letdown after The Interview with Vampire.

  • @oliverunderwood94

Maybe it was just me excusing some weak character writing but I always sort of thought Rice's vampire's didn't so much forgive and forget as have a toxic sort of relationship habit of rug sweeping due to the fact that all of them do horrible things and can't stop (due to being vampires and all sorts of messed up by trauma) and so when their loved ones do horrible things to them, they sort of feel like they deserve it. They all seem to constantly be in the honeymoon/abuse cycle with each other and because they're most unable to change, they just keep love bombing until tension gets too high and they set each other on fire.

There are new characters and others that were mentioned in the saga before, but here they converged all together in this one and that's why it sound like a mess. On the other hand, the story about the twins and Akasha is fascinating, as some of the others ancient stories about the vampires. I love the Queen of Damn ... I read in Portuguese a few times than had listen the Audiobook also a couple times. I personally feel it’s not a book for everyone... it’s a book for Anne Rice fan of the Chronicles. The book meanders sooooo much and go at least 2 parallel stories that could been completely edited out in my opinion. It surprises me her editor didn’t convince her to cut such stories plus part of the main story that were wasteful. For that I almost like the movie if they had not change many parts of the story I liked but ... this is not a review of the movie. Lol, now I’m the one meandering. Anyways I love the book but to me it satisfied the craving to know more about Anne Rice’s vampires. Maybe it’s why Ive been willing to forgive things I didn’t see making sense or being necessary to the plot. But I say this some of the Chronicles are hit or miss. Some books Anne Rice seems to have been either more inspired while others she seems to cut short, only later in other books to shoehorn details that were missed. Some characters, that she once seemed to care so much are killed out of the books. That drives me nuts! It makes me feel like I wasted hours on books that I loved been pointless if later she just erases so many characters without giving much thought. Sorry my runt ... oddly I still continue to buy her Vampire Chronicles books ... I guess I’m a sucker lol

@@Horus070 Interview was so wildly successful a novel I am almost positive that Rice had final editorial say in further books written into any new contract. I mean, Stephen King, while hopped up on cocaine and liquor, wrote about 12yo's having an orgy so they wouldn't be innocent anymore and could properly battle IT, and his editors/publisher let that go right through because once an author is pulling in hundreds of millions, the publisher will let the author do most anything they want. That said, at release and for a while after, Lestat has mostly glowing reviews. The book is meant to be something of an ensemble and a who's-who of the vampire world, so it having a lot to it makes sense. That said, I think Rice realized how far she pushed things because the next novel is WAY toned down and simple. Or perhaps she herself just wanted to do something simple for a change of pace (she doesn't seem to give a rat's ass what people think).

A lot of the naming issues in Russian classics are cultural. Key to remembering them is "First name, father's name, last name" for men and "First name, mother's name, last name" for women, and understand that people WILL use all three in literature. Interchangeably.
Also, somehow I feel like the million nicknames is a Slavic thing (I am Slavic). For example, someone named Alexander could be Alex to one group of friends, Xander to others, and Sasha to the parents (or just Sasha to everyone, Sasha is the most used nickname for Alexander around here). My first name is Eve, and there is....I think five derivative nicknames people use to refer to me, just in my family.

As far as the wrapup - I always read it as extreme apathy/boredom to a degree that mortals wouldn't understand. As if, once you've been alive and almost invincible for long enough, even having something really awful happen to you is at least a change of pace so once you've recovered it kinda balances out. And possibly that after you've known someone for enough lifetimes you hesitate to completely break that bond even if it's unhealthy. I have trouble even kicking old coworkers off my FB once we don't talk anymore, multiply that times a million.
I haven't reread the series in years; the way you describe it reminds me why people tend to love or hate her writing style. I deeply love the world building and character building and excessively long paragraphs that are purely description and atmosphere...and a lot of people really really do not dig that. (You did not imply you hated it, I know! I just know some folks who really cannot even with it.)
I don't know that I can argue if spending a book mostly on world building and backstories is "good" or "bad" writing, I just know I deeply dug it. And I think I still would on a reread. I also don't think I ever read the last 4 or so in the Vampire Chronicles, though I did read Pandora.

    CW: Sexual violence
Lordly if you think that back story with the ghosty girls seemed to include sexual violence in an inappropriate and unnecessary way you should NOT read some of Anne Rice's other, non vampire work! She straight up wrote an enter erotic sleeping beauty trilogy which is nothing, but hardcore non consensual BDSM from cover to cover, like 50 Shades on speed! It was enough for me to swear off her work forever after just skimming it, which might seem like I didn't give it enough of a change to properly judge it, but...
Its rape fetishism. I'm good with never reading that.

    • @Matrim42

I’ll grant Anne Rice one thing, she never pretended Sleeping Beauty was anything other than what it was. That was the biggest issue I had with 50 Shades; the author swearing up and down that it wasn’t abusive. The Sleeping Beauty trilogy is many things: exploitative, rape fetishistic, and often gross, but it was up front about it. Plus, on the whole, the rapists and abusers were always painted in a negative light. It’s designed to scratch the same itch that CNC play does. My biggest problem is, if memory serves, the third book takes a pretty racist swerve with all the Middle Eastern stuff.
Granted, it’s been almost 20 years since I read them, so I might be misremembering.

Yes, certain things sucked in the moment but they’ve been alive for so long it isn’t something they actively ruminate over as they have had so much happen to them? Maybe periodically they are bothered (a memory or meeting triggering those old emotions) but ultimately, they have had so many experiences and will continue to do so that they are not left in those emotional states. I want to take a moment to thank you for everything you do. You are making the world a more palatable place to be, and that is arguably more important than ever. I want you to know that your work, dedication, intelligence, wit, and humor are appreciated. Thank you for being you.

Mekare wasn't turned to stone after swallowing Akashas heart and brain. The book goes on to say how after Akashas death and Mekare becoming the new Queen of the damned her and Maharet would walk through the forest together arm in arm.

While it sounds like Rice loves her some world building and character depth, which I certainly appreciate, you need to have it be implied or provided at a more manageable pace.

I don't know, I loved the whole vampire mythology presented in the book, they're origins are fascinating to me. In general I enjoy all the books until "Blood Canticle", I could never finish that book, it bore me SO much... the witches where a BIG mistake.

I've read quite a few paranormal fantasy series and so many of them just have more characters and a more evil opponent each book. Everything is resolved by just getting grander and grander and after a few books there is barely anything left about the characters I liked in the first books.
Usually I like the first book well enough, then I like the way they get more developed in the next two or three books and then everything just becomes way too much.... So I never buy box sets of series :-D

I know that there hasn't been a movie adaptation yet of "The Tale of the Body Thief" but I would love to hear Dominic's review of the book, it was my first introduction to the Vampire Chronicles when I was younger and its just as batshit crazy as Queen of the Damned was.
