    Love the cat "loaf" at the end. 🐈 I feel like I'd be torn between keeping my pencils organized by brand, or by colour. I've got a stupid amount of nail polishes and organizing those has been challenging too! I like the aesthetic of keeping them by brand, but I'd probably use more different brands if they were done by colour. It's a struggle....🙄

      Thanks, she just loves to be involved Trust me, it went against every fibre of my being to pull them out of their sets and put in colour order. 🤣

    Wow! That's a huge work to organize all this pencils! But, it's easy for you to choose pencils more fast. And separate the colors that are not lightfast, super good idea! Thank you for this tip!! And so cute your cat!❤🐱❤🐱

    I ended up doing the same thing with my sets. The Luminance ultramarine violet (pinkish) surprised me. Thankfully the Lightfast has the same pink. I ended up putting mine in color order and separated my greens by muted and non muted. Mine sit in a flip case that holds about 500 or so. And the very light white tones start off each new color. So many are really close in color. And my straight up plain browns are in one area but my chestnut, caput mortum went into the orange browns and ochres to yellow. It definitely is a process for sure. Best wishes for your new way of organizing. I have wooden drawers that are similar for my pastels and pastel pencils. It keeps the dust off. Take care.

      It's certainly a big task, the browns were especially frustrating because they vary so widely. I'm hoping to avoid colours that are too close in future by buying open stock colours as needed where there are gaps in my colour range.

    I don't know if I could keep that many pencils organized myself. But they all look so nice.

      Well who knows if they're going to stay organised but it helps me with colour selection so I'm hoping I can maintain it to some extent.

    Great insights. I would find it challenging organizing 'premade sets' in this manner but I can definitely see the benefits!
    I can appreciate the peace of mind in knowing any pencil you grab will be lightfast enough for your art. Well done!

      It was tough to break from the sets but ultimately it will be better for colour choice.

    Just to share: I create my colour swatches stripes in 2x7cm Fine Grain 200g paper. I swatch the colour at 1 end in a 2x2cm square, then label the Lightfast #, Pencil series, colour code and name. Then I punched a hole on both ends of the paper. 1 hole for comparing the colours to photo and other swatches, the other hole for stringing all the colour swatches together by colour groups. I created a template using drafting film so that I don't have to measure the stripes every time.
    Re-grouping of colours is easier this way. I only need to create the colour swatches once, and I can re-group them anyway I want.
    To find undertone of colour:
    I use OMS to spread out the colour, it will show the undertone. Grouping of colours is easier with the undertone pre-determine.
    It is a lot of work, I feel you.

      Thank you so much for your in-depth response, that's really interesting. I had seen examples where people created individual swatch cards and I do like the idea of the hole punched through for easier comparison. This might be something I look to do in the future, the ability to rearrange the colour swatches is certainly an advantage.

      @@brusheswithbec No problem at all =) Even swatching the individual swatches is already a lot of work. You are recreating the whole set of swatches! Your hand must be really sore! Imagine you buy more colour pencils!!!

      Yes, they know what they want when they want it! 😁
      It really was a big project, definitely allow a full day for it. I think it took me just over 6 hours to do, and I could've spent longer on it, I wanted to do a complete test swatch of the colour order before doing the proper one but I was just done with it, lol

    ah, how to organize, that is the question..... i also have 6 drawers of pencils. Currently, they are by brand, and of course within brand, by color family. I have a few colors from Holbein, luminance, Blick, and Pablo, they reside with whatever brand they are most similar to. I started out very neat and organized, but have too many pencils so in places they sit 2 deep, sigh.... I haven't removed non lightfast colors because i don't sell my pictures, so lightfastness isn't an issue, but mostly because i love drawing flowers and would be at a loss without all my pinks 🙁. have to say, i loved the swatching and organizing process, i hoped you enjoyed doing it as much as i did

    • @brusheswithbec
      @brusheswithbec 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is a difficult decision on how to organise them, definitely would have been worse if I'd had more brands or pencils to deal with. Thank you, I did enjoy the process too, I always enjoy colour swatching :)

    Caran D Ache Luminance, 100 set does have some colors rated 2 instead of 1. Note from company. 100% lightfast certified: 80 colors rated LFI and 20 colors rated LFII . So I was puzzled that you removed the LFII from other brands and not Luminance. It's the same with Derwent Lightfast pencils. They have both LFI and LFII also.

    • @brusheswithbec
      @brusheswithbec ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, that's a really great question and I'm glad you asked. The different brands use different lightfast ratings and scales to rate their pencils. Faber-Castell Polychromos are only rated out of 3, whereas Derwent are rated out of 8 and Caran D'Ache Lumiance on a scale of 5. Because the Polys are only rated out of 3, anything that isn't *** (or LF1), is essentially mid-range (25+ years). Whereas with the Derwent and Caran D'Ache, LFI and LFII are considered in the permanent lightfast range with LFII being 50+ years and LF1 being 100+, with the other values not being as lightfast. I hope that makes sense :) At the end of the day, how much leeway you allow for lightfastness in your pencils is all personal preference. This was the option that made the most sense to me.

    ahh, how to organize 6 drawers of pencils ! i too have 6 drawers and this is how they are (until i change my mind yet again). 2 drawers of polychromos by color family, 1 drawer derwent lightfast, 1 drawer derwent drawing, 1 drawer caran d'ache museum awu

      My biggest problem is actually putting the pencils back in the correct order 🤣 I love the colour chart with all similar colours together, that's immensely helpful, but I'm not sure having all the pencils stored in that order is.
