    I always wanted to meet Garner but never did, my dad knew all three of these guys well from the 50's. McQueen's Hanger in Santa Paula was owned by my aunt so I annoyed him more than once, the 60's in LA was like renaissance Italy to me - Steve McQ collected both cars and airplanes and even lived with them -
    The Olds is a well drawn cartoon but a piece of american history. It does take a real hombre to drive it and i'm always happy to see these treasures in the right hands. Bravo -

      I moved to Newhall, California in 1988 after a stint in the U.S. Army. I went to work at an auto glass and mirror shop. The senior foreman, Glenn, was an expert motorcycle road racer and auto buff. He took me to Willow Springs, showed me where the old Riverside Raceway was. Saugus Speedway and Ascot were still on their last legs. Glen would tell me stories about meeting James Gardner, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and Carroll Shelby. Racing with Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson and a very young Wayne Rainey. Another great memory was meeting George Barris outside his condominium if I remember, Tarzana or Sherman Oaks. He was wheeling out two custom Yamaha Virago motorcycles. Can't relive these experiences on a cell phone, computer, or video game. I never met Jay , but Glenn has at Big Boy's and the Rock Store years ago. Lost track of my friend and can't find him. Thanks Glen.

    Jay really knows how to get around the city in an offroad vehicle. And when it's necessary he finds the trails even easier. This was a brilliant episode *****. A true work of art that stood the test of time, even though it's purpose was to handle the harshest road conditions.
    The history of the actor is extraordinary, having so much credibility in the automotive world. Jon Swift also has an interesting background, and is doing a great job to keep the legacy alive.

    I saw James Garner at the Indy 500 near the end of his life. He could hardly walk because he had just had either his knees or Hips replaced. I understand he was racked with pain for much of his life from numerous skeletal issues. I love the color of grayish blue this car is. As a kid I think I watched Rockford Files mainly because I lived in Rockford IL even though there was no link between the Two.

    Met Mr. Gardner when he was filming TANK on Ft. Benning way back when. I was in a Pathfinder Det next to Jump Week where they were filming. We talked thru a chain link fence at the airfield where they were getting ready to do a jump scene (which was cut from the film). We spoke for about a half an hour some about his films but mainly about his racing. The Banshee Olds came up and I asked what happened to the car. He said the last he heard it was behind a shop in Chula Vista. Nice man to speak with. One of those memories you keep forever.

    How lucky we were to grow up in the 60's with actor/racers McQueen, Garner, Newman and all the cars. I (and about a trillion others) started riding motorcycles because of The Great Escape. Grand Prix, LeMans, Winning, Bullitt, OAS - Jim Hall and his Chaparral's from from my part of the world. My 69 GTO, Kaw 2-stroke triple, and Rickman-Metisse. The most charismatic age of motorsports and it was accessible even to us average guys. Jay's channel brings cool back again, at least for us elderly types. Love it!

    James Garner, Paul Newman, and Steve McQueen, along with Dan Gurney, Carol Shelby, so many other "cool guys", lived a life filled with fast cars when the muscle car era was in full swing.....and did so with deep pockets. The vintage magazine articles are so entertaining, as to be collectible. Characters, with character. Google this car, and take some time.

      Probably two reasons for that. The main economic areas of europe are all costal, be it fresh or salt water. Either will cause cars to rust out. In north america, we have the whole central continent where cars can be driven daily for 30-40 years and if maintained be fine.
      In addition, our culture formed around the car. Europe, culture formed more around the more functional motorcycle early on. Europe has a far more diverse and accepting motorcycle culture. Here, well anything besides harley gangs has really only caught on in the past couple decades and starting to take shape.

    I've been waiting for years to learn more about this car and it's positively crushing that the current owner ditched the original drivetrain, wheels and who knows what else for "modern simplicity". It's awesome the car is still being raced, but the history is being crapped on with this mindless, generic decision.
    Don't get me wrong, the LS series are just about my favourite engines in the world, but they don't belong everywhere. Imagine popping the hood of a multi-million dollar Ferrari or classic Duesenberg and finding some twat had stuffed a small block in there. It's like pitching out the Mona Lisa for a picture of a Big Mac.
    I take my vintage race cars seriously.

    • @incubrian
      @incubrian 10 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      oh right because it's better for the classic drivetrain, wheels, and "original" parts to force this beast to sit idle, rotting away in some forgotten museum. it's better that the owner decided to add the modern simplicities, because now it can live and breathe. it, like any car, is built to run, and most importantly, grow with the times- enabling a driver to continue their love of driving.

Unless you own this car, you have NO RIGHT to even have an opinion as to what this car should be. It's none of your business. Once you realize that you haven't got much left to live and that your beloved car is going to be passed down to someone esle soon, you'll want to bite yourself in the ass, for not have used it more.
