Self admitted 60 year old Toyota fan boy here. A few years ago we took the chance on Mazda. Both our older girls had a choice of four or five compact cars (since Mom and Dad were paying) and they both chose the Mazda3 sedan. One still has her 2011 and has not had any issues whatsoever. The older one had a 2008 that just started to need work this past year. We live in the snow belt of Ohio and salt and brine are used heavily during the winter months. The last couple of years has taken it;s toll on the 2008 as evidenced by a lot of corrosion. Then again, my body-on-frame 2004 4Runner has also taken a severe "'corrosion" hit the past couple years. I own a 2008 MX-5 Miata that only sees fair weather use and while it only has 36K in miles, the only issue was a mass air flow sensor replacement a couple years back. Last year we went car shopping for my wife. She wanted a compact SUV to replace her 2007 Camry. We compared the new CR-V, Forester, and the CX-5. Since the RAV4 was already "long in the tooth", we did not even consider it. She ended up with a Grand Touring CX-5 with the premium package. While it has only been nine months and 13K in miles, we have not had any issues to date. A few weeks ago my daughter started looking for a compact SUV to replace her 2008 Mazda3 with 165K miles. She looked at the same three cars my wife did. Surprisingly she omitted the CR-V right out of the gate ("uninspiring and boring to look at and drive") and decided between the Forester and CX-5. While she liked the utility of the Forester, the handling (and admittedly sharp styling) of the CX-5 won her over. She ended up with the 2018 version of my wife's car, only in the snowflake pearl white color. I still think the CR-V is a better choice for families due to its increased room and cargo capacity. I will say none of us were very impressed with the feel of the CVT tranny in the Honda, although we are very used to gear transmissions. I still do a lot of outdoor activities so I am seriously contemplating a Forester in a year or two to replace my 4Runner. I will be interested to see what Toyota does with the RAV4 this time around. Of course I would give a year or so since it is a new generation. The CX-5 , like all Mazdas, are really the drivers choice in their respective markets. Their sharp styling and upscale interiors certainly do not hurt their appeal as well. Just my 2c.
Spot on. I just bought a 2018 CX-5 AWD touring myself, after having owned 4 Subaru’s. If you want to go off-road, get a Subaru. If you want to have an exciting driving experience, get a Mazda.
I love this car, perhaps the best design and interior in this segment. The interior is beautifully laid out with this soul red crystal my eyes cannot get off with it I love this paint color so much...
Non-luxury class?😂😂 the CX-5 is as luxury as the Mercedes GLA and the BMW X1. There is no such thing as a luxury class, maybe 10-15 year there was but not any more. The fully loaded models of any company are really similar in terms of interior quality and specs. The only brands I could classify as luxury are the really high end ones like Porsche, Bentley, Maserati etc
I’m glad that there is still an analog speedometer and tachometer. It means as the car ages you have one less thing you have to worry breaking and costing an arm and a leg vs a digital screen. A digital screen looks great but is unnecessary.
Johnson L Not many people would buy a $40,000+ Mazda CX-5 turbo. Subaru just discontinued the Forester XT due to low sales. The CX-5 has adequate power.
2019 cx5 grand touring reserve has turbo. However, it might be pricey and probably will question if its better to step up to a larger suv for that price point (ford edge titanium, sport, etc).
I think it’s really telling in 2023 that this car is still pretty much the same and it holds it’s while some of the competition has been redesigned twice basically. Yes nothing is perfect but I think it shows how good the basic design is.
I rarely comment on vids, but I have watched at least 30 CX-5 vids and no one else actually ‘drove’ the car like you did. I have driven the 2.5T and it’s really nice. But after seeing this I also want to drive the non turbo version and see if the cost and mpg loss is worth it. Great job!
I appreciate the fact that you drove it spiritedly! and that too in bad weather. Appreciate the risk you took. That's the test that really counts. A good review should contain diff modes of driving (straightaway, curves, highway merging, and some offroad if possible). I dislike reviews where someone drives it at 30 mph on a straight lane and says "it drives good". Almost any NEW car/truck/suv drives good at 30-40 mph on a straight lane.
Forrest Im do glad and proud of you.Weve come longvway been watching you for over 5 years!Kerp up the Great Reviews and give me some of Your Hair!!lol!!😂❤
Great video. My wife has had her 2017 cx-5 since April 2017 and absolutely loves it. I drive it sometimes and really enjoy it Mazda is like the Japanese bmw.
Nice review. The parchment interior is difficult to keep clean, particularly if you have a family that wears blue jeans frequently. I'd recommend the all black interior....which makes this look just like an Audi Q5....and easier to maintain.
This needs the 2.5 turbo NOW! Add a upgraded suspension, brembo brakes, Extreme NVH upgrades, top materials and features and sound system. Make a signature series to go up against the Audi Q5 and Porshe Macan. Add $5-$7000 and have the magazines compare it to the germans and make sure it beats them at everything.
I agree it and the crv are best in class, if they add that engine they will hgave NO competition and class is dismissed. Mazda is in a unique position. they do not have a Luxury brand above them. So they are not restricted in styling or features that they may want to put into their cars, as Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Hyundai, Nissan and others are. if they wanted to they could, Alfa Stevio (steering handling) make a signature series everybit as good as the Porshe Macan and Audi Q5 in terms of NVH, seating, infotainment/sound system/ ride quality/Handling, panoramic roof, etc. they are sort of between a mainstream and luxury brand now. If they would go all out on a CX5, using the germans as the benchmark and succeed, I would consider one, if they put a manual in it (dreaming) I would buy it. Even at $35-$45K it would undercut the Germans by about $30-$50K comparitively equipped.
I think if they make them options, maybe some would get ordered. If they just spec’d them out stock, most buyers would not pay $5-7000 more just to have the options you listed, again, if they were options some MAY build one..... but most are gonna get the GT and say that’s good enough cause they are at their max price point (at least for a Mazda).
I thought I pick up a used 2017, but lucked out and found a 2018 CX-5 and even though I was going to buy it your review made me less apprehensive. Thanks
The issue on this car is centre console where meets the front deck it's lot thicker thus you have to have your leg on gas straight Normally when we have foot on gas we lay our leg on right side n relax but it's tight space so make sure u drive it see if it's comfy for long drive It's not for me coz it wasn't comfy for me
Test drove this car 1week ago. The car developed a burning odor in a matter of minutes. The salesman said that this was normal. I have owned 8 new cars over the years and have never encountered this smell. New cars smell good, not this one. I also found that the transmission was constantly hunting for the right gear.
If you like CarPlay or Android Auto, wait until this vehicle actually comes with it. If you buy the CX5 now, Mazda will charge you about $300 to retrofit. The USB power needs to be changed to support the additional power requirements. My wife bought a new 2018 CX5 GT with Tech package, she was lead to believe CarPlay would be included as a free upgrade only to find out that Mazda will be charging for this. Disappointing.
My wife purchased a 2018 CX5, fully loaded with tech package, black exterior with white interior. I was surprised that this did not have parking sensors, very disappointing. Parking sensors are a nice option to have, I have these on my 2013 BMW X3, and found it surprising that a fully loaded, 5 years newer vehicle, would not include this as an option.
TheSphericalPrison , not the ones selling in Canada. Backup camera yes, but no front or rear “parking sensors” though. They have rear cross traffic alert, but no audible tones to warn you are about to hit an object when parking.
TheSphericalPrison, I was so frustrated with Mazda’s decision to not include Parking sensors for the Canadian market. Since I now know to look for small circular outlines at the back or front of the vehicle, it is easy to spot which vehicles has parking sensors and which does not. Her CX5 is the top trim with the tech package, but no “parking sensors”. In my opinion, if you are comparing 2 vehicles with one being a CX5 in Canada, and can’t decide which one to purchase, and the other vehicle has “parking sensors”, go with the other vehicle. You will appreciate the beeping, and the distance guidelines on how close you are to an object, especially when you get a bit older lol
Dope review , great music I’m also in the DFW ☀️ area and I can appreciate you demonstrating the various weather conditions. I just purchase this vehicle Monday and I was curious how it maneuvers, thanks again.
Handling is amazing trust. Handles like a small car and hugs the road. The suspension may feel more stiff compared to what you are used to but the car is fantastic, you won't be disappointed.
If Mazda ever adds a GT or Signature trim w/ the 2.5l turbo from the 6/CX-9 I am sold. As it stands now, it has a nice interior and sporty driving dynamics, but the engine is a total dud. The center armrest also sucks. The 1.6T in my Tucson feels TONS more powerful where I drive at 5000' above sea level, as does the 1.5T in the CR-V.

Hi.. first of all love your review. I have the 2017 CX 5 GT. Bought it last July. I somehow average about 19.2 MPG. I do half and Half both city and Highway. I use to get close to 22 mpg when I first bought using Premium gas but then I switched to Regular. I see you average about 31 mpg. On your test car. Am I doing something wrong? I am yet to speak to Mazda about it.
Great car let down by a very outdated infotainment system, it doesn't even have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, so that one thing is stopping it from being my next car.
@@TheSphericalPrison AWD on demand meaning it's only front wheel drive until they get stuck (e.g. in the mud) before the car switches automatically to AWD.

the hand rest in the middle rear seats is bad design, what if three people seat in rear and wanted to charge their phones or turn on heated rear seats?
So I am looking for a second car to drive. We have an Avalon already. What would you get with your own money as a second car? We want something different than the sedan and also maybe fun to drive? The CX-5 or ?
I must say from my experience I dint get good mileage on my 2018 CX5 AWD I had 2016 CX5 FWD and I was getting on average 600-650km per full tank of gas but on 2018 CX5AWD I am barely getting 550km that is very bed!! What is up with that ?? Mazda advertise great mileage because 2 cylinders are cutting out when you drive over 100km/h on hi way speed but that wont give you any advantage in the City people. I love design of it and I bought because of that not thinking it will be any worse on gas but now that i am stuck with it just passing this along
padistedor It’s available on the 2018 Mazda6. It should be a simple software update in the future. Mazda is offering free update to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto on the Mazda6 right now. Mazda might wait to integrate Apple CarPlay, Android Auto for the mid cycle refresh in a few years, hopefully sooner.
Beautiful far with a fatal flaw. Not enough power. I couldn't care less about AA/ACP but this car needs the Turbo that the 6 is getting. Maybe the next gen...
How could anyone with any semblance of a soul not like the grille; this machine is just flat-out gorgeous from every angle.
Not sure about the back end, especially the very small tail lights

I love the interior. Simplistic yet classy. Dont fancy much complex interior
I would pick the CX-5 hands down
The CX-5 is the best looking CUV in the non-luxury class.
I think it looks better than the Lexus NX, Acura RDX, and Infiniti QX50. Mazda has really stepped their game up with every single model.

The all wheel drive does very little for handling in the CX-5 the only time it sends power to the back is under loss of traction.

Just so you know, cylinder deactivation only works within 40-80kmh on light engine load. It won't activate on highway.
The front look like it could get damage easily. I am about to get one and that's my only concern.
The one downside for this car is the rear legroom.. It's very short
It’s actually not that far off the comp. The cargo space is definitely smaller though

I won’t trade in my 2015 CX5 until they add apple car play and android auto.
padistedor It’s available on the 2018 Mazda6. It should be a simple software update in the future. Mazda is offering free update to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto on the Mazda6 right now. Mazda might wait to integrate Apple CarPlay, Android Auto for the mid cycle refresh in a few years, hopefully sooner.
gedaman no its not free. They told me to update it for 400$! Im so pissed
Does this car come equipped with 360 degree camera
Mazda has to do something about the fuel tank. It's too small.
15 Gallons isnt small
Beautiful far with a fatal flaw. Not enough power. I couldn't care less about AA/ACP but this car needs the Turbo that the 6 is getting. Maybe the next gen...
FTWinnick Honda crv 190hp/ mazda cx 5 187hp... almost the same!! The power is just right and the fuel economy.
The non aspirated motor is more simple than the turbo one, less mantenience costs.
